Al-Rodhan and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in this era of globalisation, a multitude of threats impact the security of populations everywhere. these threats now increasingly transgress the traditional boundaries of states and are often non-military in nature, requiring more comprehensive and multifaceted approaches and policy responses. while every threat is unique in terms of its root causes and remedies, philosophical and conceptual methods exist that offer valuable tools for analysis and potential policy recommendations for states facing such threats. this book presents in a novel way eight such approaches that -- when applied against any transnational threat -- may help to enhance the effectiveness of states in their pursuit of long-term and durable security.

Description : Read Now The Oxford Handbook Of Women Peace And Security by Sara E. Davies and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. passed in 2000, the united nations security council resolution 1325 and subsequent seven resolutions make up the women, peace, and security (wps) agenda. this agenda is a significant international normative and policy framework addressing the gender-specific impacts of conflict on women and girls, including protection against sexual and gender-based violence, promotion of women's participation in peace and security processes, and support for women's roles as peace builders in the prevention of conflict and rebuilding of societies after conflict. implementation within and across states and international organizations - and within peace and security operations - has been slow despite significant transnational advocacy in support of the wps agenda. the oxford handbook of women, peace, and security brings together scholars, advocates, and policymakers to provide an overview of what we know concerning what works to promote women's participation in peace and security, what works to protect women and girls from sexual and gender-based violence and other human rights violations, and what works to prevent conflict drawing on women's experiences and knowledge of building peace from local to global levels. just as importantly, it addresses the gaps in knowledge on and the future direction of scholarship on wps. the handbook particularly aims to build on the findings from the 2015 global study of resolution 1325, commissioned by the un-secretary general. over the course of six sections, the handbook addresses the concepts and early history behind wps; the theory and practice of wps; international institutions involved with the wps agenda; the implementation of wps in conflict prevention, peace operations, peace building, arms control, human-rights protection, and protection of civilians; connections between wps and other un resolutions and agendas; and the ongoing and future challenges of wps.

Description : Read Now Regional Security And Global Governance by Kennedy Graham and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. a compelling study of the interaction between regional agencies and the un security council that includes a proposal for a regional-global security mechanism, which should be of interest to policy makers worldwide. this ground-breaking exploration into how peace and security might best be attained in the 21st century, its central message is the importance of realizing un secretary-general kofi annan’s vision of a "regional-global security mechanism” within the next decade. the book reviews the historical tussle between universalism and regionalism as the cornerstone of international security over the past century, culminating in the "new regionalism" that has characterised international relations in recent decades. the complexities of contemporary regional, sub-regional and other organizations, blessed and burdened with overlapping membership, evolving mandates, and even shifting "focal areas" are analysed. the "multidimensional phenomenon" of regional security is explored--cultural, political and legal--with a view to understanding how regional organizations work today. this book is one of those rare offerings--a policy-oriented prescription for peace and security that is based on factual analysis and creative reasoning. it is a must for national diplomats, regional officials, and international civil servants.

Description : Read Now Formal Peace And Informal War by Zoë Marriage and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. northern interventions into african countries at war are dominated by security concerns, bolstered by claims of shared returns and reinforcing processes of development and security. as global security and human security became prominent in development policy, congo was wracked by violent rule, pillage, internal fighting, and invasion. in 2002, the global and all-inclusive peace was promoted by northern donors, placing a formal peace on the mass of informalised wars. formal peace and informal war: security and development in congo examines how the security interests of the congolese population have interacted with those of northern donors. it explores congo’s contemporary wars and the peace agreed on in 2002 from a security perspective and challenges the asserted commonality of the liberal interventions made by northern donors. it finds that the peace framed the multiple conflicts in congo as a civil war and engineered a power-sharing agreement between elite belligerents. the book argues that the population were politically and economically excluded from the peace and have been subjected to control and containment when their security rests with power and freedom.

Description : Read Now Whither Regional Peace And Security? by Denis Kadima and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book is the outcome of a seminar hosted by the africa institute of south africa, to provide a platform for congolese and south african representatives of differing political persuasions to present their views on the multi-dimensional and complex nature of the present crisis in the democratic republic of congo; and debate strategies for peace and reconstruction. the congolese representatives came from both the government controlled area, kinshasa; and the territory under rebel administration, kivu. both groups provide coverage of the conflict, discuss issues of nationality, and emphasise the need for inclusion in national and local dialogue. the papers also debate peace-keeping and peace-enforcement; military, ethnic, political and economic constraints to peace building, and how these may be overcome; and demilitarisation and disarmament of militias operating in the eastern congo. they analyse the state of the economy in the drc in the periods of the mobutu era, during the kabila-led take-over, and since the eruption of the war; and consider the possibilities for sustainable economic reconstruction. they expose the impacts of the war on women and children, and outline the role of women in the peace efforts.

Description : Read Now Pathways For Peace by United Nations;World Bank and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. violent conflicts today are complex and increasingly protracted, involving more nonstate groups and regional and international actors. it is estimated that by 2030—the horizon set by the international community for achieving the sustainable development goals—more than half of the world’s poor will be living in countries affected by high levels of violence. information and communication technology, population movements, and climate change are also creating shared risks that must be managed at both national and international levels. pathways for peace is a joint united nations†“world bank group study that originates from the conviction that the international community’s attention must urgently be refocused on prevention. a scaled-up system for preventive action would save between us$5 billion and us$70 billion per year, which could be reinvested in reducing poverty and improving the well-being of populations. the study aims to improve the way in which domestic development processes interact with security, diplomacy, mediation, and other efforts to prevent conflicts from becoming violent. it stresses the importance of grievances related to exclusion—from access to power, natural resources, security and justice, for example—that are at the root of many violent conflicts today. based on a review of cases in which prevention has been successful, the study makes recommendations for countries facing emerging risks of violent conflict as well as for the international community. development policies and programs must be a core part of preventive efforts; when risks are high or building up, inclusive solutions through dialogue, adapted macroeconomic policies, institutional reform, and redistributive policies are required. inclusion is key, and preventive action needs to adopt a more people-centered approach that includes mainstreaming citizen engagement. enhancing the participation of women and youth in decision making is fundamental to sustaining peace, as well as long-term policies to address the aspirations of women and young people.
