Description : Read Now Building New Bridges Batir De Nouveaux Ponts by Jeff Keshen and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. questions of methodology and the use of sources are fundamental to all academic disciplines. in recent years, this topic has become far more challenging as scholars are increasingly adopting an interdisciplinary approach to achieve richer and deeper analyses, particularly in the humanities and social sciences. building new bridges / bâtir de nouveaux ponts is a collection of scholarly papers that deals with the first principles of source identification and their effective utilization. the contributors to the volume come from a wide range of disciplines and represent both french and english canada. together, they explore and encourage the interdisciplinarity trend - around which considerable academic trepidation remains - and seek to explain, for example, how historians and those in english or lettres françaises analyze texts, how scholars approach paintings, photography, and film, and how the study of music relates tempo and lyrics to wider societal trends. they utilize their respective research to elucidate means of effectively employing evidences and methods to achieve richer, deeper, and more nuanced results. as a whole, the collection provides an excellent primer for scholars of methodology.

Description : Read Now The Making Of A Social Disease by David S. Barnes and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in this first english-language study of popular and scientific responses to tuberculosis in nineteenth-century france, david barnes provides a much-needed historical perspective on a disease that is making an alarming comeback in the united states and europe. barnes argues that french perceptions of the disease—ranging from the early romantic image of a consumptive woman to the later view of a scourge spread by the poor—owed more to the power structures of nineteenth-century society than to medical science. by 1900, the war against tuberculosis had become a war against the dirty habits of the working class. lucid and original, barnes's study broadens our understanding of how and why societies assign moral meanings to deadly diseases.

Description : Read Now Creating Born Criminals by Nicole Hahn Rafter and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. but creating born criminals is much more than a look at the past. it is an exploration of the role of biological explanation as a form of discourse and of its impact upon society. while the bell curve and other recent books have stopped short of making eugenic recommendations, their contentions point toward eugenic conclusions, and people familiar with the history of eugenics can hear in them its echoes. rafter demonstrates that we need to know how eugenic reasoning worked in the past and that we must recognize the dangers posed by the dominance of a theory that interprets social problems in biological terms and difference as biological inferiority.

Description : Read Now Inventing The Criminal by Richard F. Wetzell and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. recent years have witnessed a resurgence of biological research into the causes of crime, but the origins of this kind of research date back to the late nineteenth century. here, richard wetzell presents the first history of german criminology from imperial germany through the weimar republic to the end of the third reich, a period that provided a unique test case for the perils associated with biological explanations of crime. drawing on a wealth of primary sources from criminological, legal, and psychiatric literature, wetzell shows that german biomedical research on crime predominated over sociological research and thus contributed to the rise of the eugenics movement and the eventual targeting of criminals for eugenic measures by the nazi regime. however, he also demonstrates that the development of german criminology was characterized by a constant tension between the criminologists' hereditarian biases and an increasing methodological sophistication that prevented many of them from endorsing the crude genetic determinism and racism that characterized so much of hitler's regime. as a result, proposals for the sterilization of criminals remained highly controversial during the nazi years, suggesting that nazi biological politics left more room for contention than has often been assumed.

Description : Read Now Murders And Madness by Ruth Harris and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this is an interdisciplinary study of the debate on crime and madness in france between 1880 and 1914. harris argues that the traditional bases of the french penal system were undermined at the time by psychiatric theories of human behavior and new sociological interpretations of crime, which challenged legal concepts of free will and moral responsibility. the book also examines the evolution of a new kind of knowledge, and shows how the politique criminelle envisaged by specialists was the result of the interaction among the bureaucratic culture of the magistrates, the clinical and scientific world of the psychiatrists, and the background of the defendants.

Description : Read Now Punishment And Welfare by David Garland and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. first published in 1985, this classic of law and society scholarship continues to shape the research agenda of today’s sociology of punishment. it is now republished with a new preface by the author. punishment and welfare explores the relation of punishment to politics, the historical formation and development of criminology, and the way in which penal reform grew out of the complex set of political projects that founded the modern welfare state. its analyses powerfully illuminate many of the central problems of contemporary penal and welfare policy, showing how these problems grew out of political struggles and theoretical debates that occurred in the first years of the 20th century. in conducting this investigation, david garland developed a method of research which combines detailed historical and textual analysis with a broader sociological vision, thereby synthesizing two forms of analysis that are more often developed in isolation. the resulting genealogy will interest everyone who works in this field. “… a brilliant book … the main arguments of punishment and welfare are undoubtedly some of the most tenacious and exciting to emerge from the field of criminology in many years.” — piers bierne, contemporary sociology “… one of the most important pieces of work ever to emerge in british criminology. it is a study of depth, subtlety and complexity … garland’s integration of close historical details with a broader sociological vision provides a model methodology….” — stan cohen, british journal of criminology “this study shows how early 20th-century penal policy was a function of the nation’s social welfare practices. garland’s theory is as applicable to the 21st century as it is to that earlier era: a tour de force.” — malcolm feeley, university of california–berkeley
