Description : Read Now Ageing Gender And Illness In Anglophone Literature by Heike Hartung and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this study establishes age as a category of literary history, delineating age in its interaction with gender and narrative genre. based on the historical premise that the view of ageing as a burden emerges as a specific narrative in the late eighteenth century, the study highlights how the changing experience of ageing is shaped by that of gender. by reading the bildungsroman as a 'coming of age' novel, the book asks how the telling of a life in time affects individual age narratives. bringing together the different perspectives of age and disability studies, the book argues that illness is already an important issue in the bildungsroman's narratives of ageing. this theoretical stance provides new interpretations of canonical novels, visiting authors such as johann wolfgang goethe, frances burney, maria edgeworth, jane austen, charles dickens, george eliot, samuel beckett, and jonathan franzen. drawing on the link between age and illness in the bildungsroman's age narratives, the genre of 'dementia narrative' is presented as one of the directions which the bildungsroman takes after its classical period. applying these theoretical perspectives to canonical novels of the nineteenth century and to the new genre of 'dementia narrative', the volume also provides new insights into literary and genre history. this book introduces a new theoretical approach to cultural age studies and offers a comprehensive analysis of the connection between narratology, literary theory, gender and age studies.

Description : Read Now Post Conflict Literature by Chris Andrews and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book brings together a variety of perspectives to explore the role of literature in the aftermath of political conflict, studying the ways in which writers approach violent conflict and the equally important subject of peace. essays put insights from peace and conflict studies into dialog with the unique ways in which literature attempts to understand the past, and to reimagine both the present and the future, exploring concepts like truth and reconciliation, post-traumatic memory, historical reckoning, therapeutic storytelling, transitional justice, archival memory, and questions about victimhood and reparation. drawing on a range of literary texts and addressing a variety of post-conflict societies, this volume charts and explores the ways in which literature attempts to depict and make sense of this new philosophical terrain. as such, it aims to offer a self-conscious examination of literature, and the discipline of literary studies, considering the ability of both to interrogate and explore the legacies of political and civil conflict around the world. the book focuses on the experience of post-apartheid south africa, post-troubles northern ireland, and post-dictatorship latin america. the recent history of these regions, and in particular their acute experience of ethno-religious and civil conflict, make them highly productive contexts in which to begin examining the role of literature in the aftermath of social trauma. rather than a definitive account of the subject, the collection defines a new field for literary studies, and opens it up to scholars working in other regional and national contexts. to this end, the book includes essays on post-1989 germany, post-9/11 united states, the israeli-palestinian conflict, sierra leone, and narratives of asylum seeker/refugee communities. this volume’s comparative frame draws on well-established precedents for thinking about the cultural politics of these regions, making it a valuable resource for scholars of comparative literature, peace and conflicts studies, human rights, transitional justice, and the politics of literature.

Description : Read Now Embodied Narration by Heike Hartung and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. do liminal embodied experiences such as illness, death and dying affect literary form? in recent years, the concept of embodiment has been theorized from various perspectives. gender studies have been concerned with the cultural implications of embodiment, arguing to move away from viewing the body as a prediscursive phenomenon to regarding it as an acculturated body. age studies have extended this view to the embodied experience of ageing, while drawing attention to the ways in which the ageing body, through its materiality and plasticity, restricts the possibilities of (de)constructing subjectivity. these current debates on embodiment find a strong counterpart in literary representation. the contributions to this anthology investigate how and to what extend physical borderline experiences affect literary form.

Description : Read Now The Fixed Period by Anthony Trollope and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. it may be doubted whether a brighter, more prosperous, and specially a more orderly colony than britannula was ever settled by british colonists. but it had its period of separation from the mother country, though never of rebellion,Ñlike its elder sister new zealand. indeed, in that respect it simply followed the lead given her by the australias, which, when they set up for themselves, did so with the full co-operation of england. there was, no doubt, a special cause with us which did not exist in australia, and which was only, in part, understood by the british government when we britannulists were allowed to stand by ourselves. the great doctrine of a Òfixed periodÓ was received by them at first with ridicule, and then with dismay; but it was undoubtedly the strong faith which we of britannula had in that doctrine which induced our separation. nothing could have been more successful than our efforts to live alone during the thirty years that we remained our own masters. we repudiated no debt,Ñas have done some of our neighbours; and no attempts have been made towards communism,Ñas has been the case with others. we have been laborious, contented, and prosperous; and if we have been reabsorbed by the mother country, in accordance with what i cannot but call the pusillanimous conduct of certain of our elder britannulists, it has not been from any failure on the part of the island, but from the opposition with which the fixed period has been regarded. i think i must begin my story by explaining in moderate language a few of the manifest advantages which would attend the adoption of the fixed period in all countries. as far as the law went it was adopted in britannula. its adoption was the first thing discussed by our young assembly, when we found ourselves alone; and though there were disputes on the subject, in none of them was opposition made to the system. i myself, at the age of thirty, had been elected speaker of that parliament. but i was, nevertheless, able to discuss the merits of the bills in committee, and i did so with some enthusiasm. thirty years have passed since, and my ÒperiodÓ is drawing nigh. but i am still as energetic as ever, and as assured that the doctrine will ultimately prevail over the face of the civilised world, though i will acknowledge that men are not as yet ripe for it.

Description : Read Now Narratives Of Life by Heike Hartung and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the prospect of increasing longevity has turned aging and old age into a topic of concern in western societies. the discourse of age and the proliferation of narrative in contemporary media culture both transgress disciplinary boundaries. addressing the "narratives of life" from different disciplinary angles this volume aims to explore the scope of a narrative gerontology. aging and the stories that are told about it or from within are transnational and transcultural phenomena. while aging is thus a universal process, attention is also drawn to the categories of difference that it evokes: historical, social and cultural differences as well as gender differences.

Description : Read Now Tropical Gothic In Literature And Culture by Justin D. Edwards and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. tropical gothic examines gothic within a specific geographical area of ‘the south’ of the americas. in so doing, we structure the book around geographical coordinates (from north to south) and move between various national traditions of the gothic (mexico, argentina, brazil, etc) alongside regional manifestations of the gothic (the us south and the caribbean) as well as transnational movements of the gothic within the americas. the reflections on national traditions of the gothic in this volume add to the critical body of literature on specific languages or particular nations, such as scottish gothic, american gothic, canadian gothic, german gothic, kiwi gothic, etc. this is significant because, while the southern gothic in the us has been thoroughly explored, there is a gap in the critical literature about the gothic in the larger context of region of ‘the south’ in the americas. this volume does not pretend to be a comprehensive examination of tropical gothic in the americas; rather, it pinpoints a variety of locations where this form of the gothic emerges. in so doing, the transnational interventions of the gothic in this book read the flows of gothic forms across borders and geographical regions to tease out the complexities of gothic cultural production within cultural and linguistic translations. tropical gothic includes, but is by no means limited to, a reflection on a region where european colonial powers fought intensively against indigenous populations and against each other for control of land and resources. in other cases, the vast populations of african slaves were transported, endowing these regions with a cultural inheritance that all the nations involved are still trying to comprehend. the volume reflects on how these histories influence the gothic in this region.

Description : Read Now The Intern Doctor S Initiation by Sandeep Jauhar and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. ‘i was an intern a decade ago now, but i still remember it the way soldiers remember war.’ intern is sandeep jauhar’s story of his days and nights in residency at a busy hospital in new york city, a trial that led him to question every assumption about medical care today. residency—and especially the first year, called internship—is legendary for its brutality. working eighty hours or more per week, most new doctors spend their first year asking themselves why they wanted to be doctors in the first place.   jauhar’s internship was even more harrowing than most: he switched from physics to medicine in order to follow a more humane calling—only to find that medicine put patients’ concerns last. he struggled to find a place among squadrons of cocky residents and doctors. he challenged the practices of the internship in the new york times, attracting the suspicions of the medical bureaucracy. then, suddenly stricken, he became a patient himself—and came to see that today’s high-tech, high-pressure medicine can be a humane science after all. now a thriving cardiologist, jauhar has all the qualities you’d want in your own doctor: expertise, insight, a feel for the human factor, a sense of humor, and a keen awareness of the worries that we all have in common. his beautifully written memoir explains the inner workings of modern medicine with rare candor and insight. reviews ‘a sensitive, thoughtful observer and an experienced, gifted writer . . . it will be the standard by which future such memoirs will be judged’ —abraham verghese, author of my own country ‘in a voice of profound honesty and intelligence, sandeep jauhar gives us an insider’s look at the medical profession, and also a dramatic account of the psychological challenges of early adulthood’ —akhil sharma, author of an obedient father

Description : Read Now Ethics And Human Rights In Anglophone African Women S Literature by Chielozona Eze and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book proposes feminist empathy as a model of interpretation in the works of contemporary anglophone african women writers. the african woman’s body is often portrayed as having been disabled by the patriarchal and sexist structures of society. returning to their bodies as a point of reference, rather than the postcolonial ideology of empire, contemporaryafrican women writers demand fairness and equality. by showing how this literature deploys imaginative shifts in perspective with women experiencing unfairness, injustice, or oppression because of their gender, chielozona eze argues that by considering feminist empathy, discussions open up about how this literature directly addresses the systems that put them in disadvantaged positions. this book, therefore, engages a new ethical and human rights awareness in african literary and cultural discourses, highlighting the openness to reality that is compatible with african multi-ethnic, multi-racial, and increasingly cosmopolitan communities.
