Description : Read Now Networking The Bloc by Klara Kemp-Welch and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the story of the experimental zeitgeist in eastern european art, seen through personal encounters, pioneering dialogues, collaborative projects, and cultural exchanges. throughout the 1970s, a network of artists emerged to bridge the east-west divide, and the no less rigid divides between the countries of the eastern bloc. originating with a series of creative initiatives by artists, art historians, and critics and centered in places like budapest, poznan, and prague, this experimental dialogue involved western participation but is today largely forgotten in the west. in networking the bloc, klara kemp-welch vividly recaptures this lost chapter of art history, documenting an elaborate web of artistic connectivity that came about through a series of personal encounters, pioneering dialogues, collaborative projects, and cultural exchanges. countering the conventional cold war narrative of eastern bloc isolation, kemp-welch shows how artistic ideas were relayed among like-minded artists across ideological boundaries and national frontiers. much of the work created was collaborative, and personal encounters were at its heart. drawing on archival documents and interviews with participants, kemp-welch focuses on the exchanges and projects themselves rather than the personalities involved. each of the projects she examines relied for its realization on a network of contributors. she looks first at the mobilization of the network, from 1964 to 1972, exploring five pioneering cases: a friendship between a slovak artist and a french critic, an artistic credo, an exhibition, a conceptual proposition, and a book. she then charts a series of way stations for experimental art from the soviet bloc between 1972 and 1976—points of distribution between studios, private homes, galleries, and certain cities. finally, she investigates convergences—a succession of shared exhibitions and events in the second half of the 1970s in locations ranging from prague to milan to moscow. networking the bloc, kemp-welch invites us to rethink the art of the late cold war period from eastern european perspectives.

Description : Read Now When The Other Is Ourselves by no defined and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this dissertation begins with the premise that the founding assumptions undergirding the interdisciplinary field of tourism studies have necessarily, if not inevitably, engendered a set of critical lacunae around race and ethnicity. specifically, these assumptions have functioned to circumscribe any racial paradigm in which people of color are anything but the objects of touristic inquiry. "when the 'other' is ourselves: imperial legacies, tourist imaginaries, and the representation of difference in chicana/o travel writing and cultural production" asks what subjectivities are (re)formed when the supposed "other" is doing the touring, particularly when that someone encounters what she senses is an exoticized or fetishized reflection of herself. through an examination of chicana/o memoirs, visual art, and fiction that center mexican-american (actual and imagined, factual and fictionalized) experiences of touristic mobility, this study considers new and different questions about identity, difference, and representation in literary and cultural discourses.

Description : Read Now Natural Enemies by Robert C. Grogin and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in an attempt to explain the seemingly a priori antagonisms of the soviet union and the united states during the cold war, natural enemies stands apart from previous literature on the topic. looking at modern european history and the rise of the united states as a super-power, robert c. grogin contends that the cold war eventually arose out of the clash of two ideologically motivated political systems. grogin helps us see how the conflict between an american, wilsonian-inspired politics and soviet leninist ideology developed into a gulf that was bound to be antagonistic from the start. the various postwar crises and failed attempts at detente frame this struggle, as grogin charts the geopolitical trajectory of the conflict until its final dissolution. with an eye toward understanding the impact of this period on subsequent world events, natural enemies presents an integrated and original interpretation of cold war history.

Description : Read Now The Swing Around The Circle by Garry Boulard and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in 1866, president andrew johnson was trying to find solutions to a bewildering array of immediate post-civil war challenges: what to do about the recently liberated slaves, how to bring the south back into the union, whether or not former members of the confederacy should be pardoned and forgiven for their war time acts and building a thriving national economy that would provide jobs for millions of new veterans. confronted with an increasingly assertive congress that had been frustrated by its lack of influence during the presidency of abraham lincoln, johnson decided to take his case directly to the american people for the fall mid-term elections of 1866, becoming the first president in history to actively engage in a political campaign. in a trade ride in which he was joined by the hero ulysses s. grant, the very young george armstrong custer, and the legendary william seward, the secretary of state who was viciously attacked on the same night that lincoln was murdered, johnson spoke to hundreds of thousands of voters from new york to chicago and st. louis. but because of his confrontational, intemperate rhetorical style and habit of engaging hecklers in direct verbal battle, johnson alienated more people than he won over, resulting not only in a thumping defeat for his cause at the polls, but a move to impeach and remove him from office by opponents who were convinced that johnson's behavior on the swing around the circle showed that he was mentally unbalanced. repeatedly referred to by historians and reporters in the decades since, the swing around the circle has never been explored in one single book until now.

Description : Read Now Hegemony And Resistance Around The Iranian Nuclear Programme by Moritz Pieper and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the iranian nuclear crisis is a proxy arena for competing visions about the functioning of international relations. this book is the first to provide comprehensive and comparative analyses to conceptualise the interaction between ‘hegemonic structures’ and those actors resisting them using the iranian nuclear case as an illustration. it analyses the foreign policies of china, russia and turkey towards the iranian nuclear programme and thereby answers the question to what extent these policies are indicative of a security culture that resists hegemony. based on 70 elite interviews with experts and decision-makers closely involved with the iranian nuclear file, it analyses resistance to hegemony across its ideational, material and institutional framework conditions. the cases examined show how ‘compliance’ on the part of china, russia and turkey with parts of us approaches to the iranian nuclear conflict has been selective, and how us policy preferences in the iran dossier have been resisted on other occasions. as such, the iran nuclear case serves as an illustration to shed light on the contemporaneous interaction of the forces of consent and coercion in international politics. this book will be of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners in international relations, security studies and foreign policy analysis.
