Description : Read Now Black French Women And The Struggle For Equality 1848 2016 by Félix Germain, Silyane Larcher and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. black french women and the struggle for equality, 1848–2016 explores how black women in france itself, the french caribbean, gorée, dakar, rufisque, and saint-louis experienced and reacted to french colonialism and how gendered readings of colonization, decolonization, and social movements cast new light on the history of french colonization and of black france. in addition to delineating the powerful contributions of black french women in the struggle for equality, contributors also look at the experiences of african american women in paris and in so doing integrate into colonial and postcolonial conversations the strategies black women have engaged in negotiating gender and race relations à la française. drawing on research by scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds and countries, this collection offers a fresh, multidimensional perspective on race, class, and gender relations in france and its former colonies, exploring how black women have negotiated the boundaries of patriarchy and racism from their emancipation from slavery to the second decade of the twenty-first century.

Description : Read Now Race And Sex Across The French Atlantic by Frieda Ekotto and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. race and sex across the french atlantic is a critical reconceptualization of the contributions of france and the french-speaking world to race relations in the continental united states. radically re-evaluating the work of french and francophone cultural icons such as jean genet, aime cesaire, frantz fanon and dany laferriere, this book makes use of untapped historical archival records that link these writers to important african-american political activists and intellectuals such as lorraine hansberry, james baldwin and the black panthers, and even to the white american writer norman mailer. which color is black? argues that re-evaluating the 'franch atlantic' — characterized by quebec, france, belgium, the french caribbean and french-speaking africa — may fundamentally reshape present transatlantic notions of race and sexuality.

Description : Read Now A White Side Of Black Britain by France Winddance Twine and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. a white side of black britain explores the racial consciousness of white women in the united kingdom who have had children with black men, primarily british-born men of caribbean heritage. contending that social scientists do not adequately understand how white members of black families negotiate race, france winddance twine describes the everyday lives of white women raising children of african caribbean descent in a racially diverse mid-size british city. varying in age, income, and education, the women at the centre of twine's ethnography share moving stories about how they met the fathers of their children, how they incorporate ideas about race and racism into their parenting, and how their thinking about race and social relations changed over time. interviewing and observing more than forty multiracial families over the span of a decade, twine discovered that the white women's sense of belonging and racial consciousness was derived as much from their interactions with their partner's family and friends as it was from their romantic relations with black men. in addition to the white birth mothers, twine interviewed their children, partners, and extended families, and her book can be read in part as a dialogue about race among black and white members of the same families. it includes intimate photographs of the women and their children, partners, extended families, and community.

Description : Read Now Nationalizing France S Army by Christopher J. Tozzi and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. before the french revolution, tens of thousands of foreigners served in france’s army. they included troops from not only all parts of europe but also places as far away as madagascar, west africa, and new york city. beginning in 1789, the french revolutionaries, driven by a new political ideology that placed "the nation" at the center of sovereignty, began aggressively purging the army of men they did not consider french, even if those troops supported the new regime. such efforts proved much more difficult than the revolutionaries anticipated, however, owing to both their need for soldiers as france waged war against much of the rest of europe and the difficulty of defining nationality cleanly at the dawn of the modern era. napoleon later faced the same conundrums as he vacillated between policies favoring and rejecting foreigners from his army. it was not until the bourbon restoration, when the modern french foreign legion appeared, that the french state established an enduring policy on the place of foreigners within its armed forces. by telling the story of france’s noncitizen soldiers—who included men born abroad as well as jews and blacks whose citizenship rights were subject to contestation—christopher tozzi sheds new light on the roots of revolutionary france’s inability to integrate its national community despite the inclusionary promise of french republicanism. drawing on a range of original, unpublished archival sources, tozzi also highlights the linguistic, religious, cultural, and racial differences that france’s experiments with noncitizen soldiers introduced to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century french society. winner of the walker cowen memorial prize for an outstanding work of scholarship in eighteenth-century studies
