Description : Read Now Cascades Of Violence by John Braithwaite and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. as in the cascading of water, violence and nonviolence can cascade down from commanding heights of power (as in waterfalls), up from powerless peripheries, and can undulate to spread horizontally (flowing from one space to another). as with containing water, conflict cannot be contained without asking crucial questions about which variables might cause it to cascade from the top-down, bottom up and from the middle-out. the book shows how violence cascades from state to state. empirical research has shown that nations with a neighbor at war are more likely to have a civil war themselves (sambanis 2001). more importantly in the analysis of this book, war cascades from hot spot to hot spot within and between states (autesserre 2010, 2014). the key to understanding cascades of hot spots is in the interaction between local and macro cleavages and alliances (kalyvas 2006). the analysis exposes the folly of asking single-level policy questions like do the benefits and costs of a regime change in iraq justify an invasion? we must also ask what other violence might cascade from an invasion of iraq? the cascades concept is widespread in the physical and biological sciences with cascades in geology, particle physics and the globalization of contagion. the past two decades has seen prominent and powerful applications of the cascades idea to the social sciences (sunstein 1997; gladwell 2000; sikkink 2011). in his discussion of ethnic violence, james rosenau (1990) stressed that the image of turbulence developed by mathematicians and physicists could provide an important basis for understanding the idea of bifurcation and related ideas of complexity, chaos, and turbulence in complex systems. he classified the bifurcated systems in contemporary world politics as the multicentric system and the statecentric system. each of these affects the others in multiple ways, at multiple levels, and in ways that make events enormously hard to predict (rosenau 1990, 2006). he replaced the idea of events with cascades to describe the event structures that 'gather momentum, stall, reverse course, and resume anew as their repercussions spread among whole systems and subsystems' (1990: 299). through a detailed analysis of case studies in south asia, that built on john braithwaite's twenty-five year project peacebuilding compared, and coding of conflicts in different parts of the globe, we expand rosenau's concept of global turbulence and images of cascades. in the cascades of violence in south asia, we demonstrate how micro-events such as localized riots, land-grabbing, pervasive militarization and attempts to assassinate political leaders are linked to large scale macro-events of global politics. we argue in order to prevent future conflicts there is a need to understand the relationships between history, structures and agency; interest, values and politics; global and local factors and alliances.

Description : Read Now The Truth About Muhammad by Robert Spencer and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. muhammad: a frank look at his influential (and violent) life and teachings in the truth about muhammad, new york times bestselling author and islam expert robert spencer offers an honest and telling portrait of the founder of islam-perhaps the first such portrait in half a century-unbounded by fear and political correctness, unflinching, and willing to face the hard facts about muhammad's life that continue to affect our world today. from muhammad's first "revelation" from allah (which filled him with terror that he was demonpossessed) to his deathbed (from which he called down curses upon jews and christians), it's all here-told with extensive documentation from the sources that muslims themselves consider most reliable about muhammad. spencer details muhammad's development from a preacher of hellfire and damnation into a political and military leader who expanded his rule by force of arms, promising his warriors luridly physical delights in paradise if they were killed in his cause. he explains how the qur'an's teaching on warfare against unbelievers developed-with constant war to establish the hegemony of islamic law as the last stage. spencer also gives the truth about muhammad's convenient "revelations" justifying his own licentiousness; his joy in the brutal murders of his enemies; and above all, his clear marching orders to his followers to convert non-muslims to islam-or force them to live as inferiors under islamic rule. in the truth about muhammad, you'll learn - the truth about muhammad's multiple marriages (including one to a nine-year-old) - how muhammad set legal standards that make it virtually impossible to prove rape in islamic countries - how muhammad's example justifies jihad and terrorism - the real "satanic verses" incident (not the salman rushdie version) that remains a scandal to muslims - how muhammad's faulty knowledge of judaism and christianity has influenced islamic theology--and colored muslim relations with jews and christians to this day. recognizing the true nature of islam, spencer argues, is essential for judging the prospects for largescale islamic reform, the effective prosecution of the war on terror, the democracy project in afghanistan and iraq, and immigration and border control to protect the united states from terrorism. all of which makes it crucial for every citizen (and policymaker) who loves freedom to read and ponder the truth about muhammad

Description : Read Now Fighting To The End by C. Christine Fair and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. pakistan's army has dominated the state for most of its 66 years. it has locked the country in an enduring rivalry with india to revise the maps in kashmir and to resist india's slow but inevitable rise. to prosecute these dangerous policies, the army employs non-state actors under the security of its ever-expanding nuclear umbrella. the pakistan army started three wars with india over kashmir in 1947, 1965, and 1999 and failed to win any of them. it has sustained a proxy war in kashmir since 1989 using islamist militants, some of whom have now turned their guns against the pakistani state. the pakistan army has supported non-islamist insurgencies throughout india as well as a country-wide islamist terror campaign that have brought the two countries to the brink of war on several occasions. despite pakistan's efforts to coerce india, it has only achieved modest successes. even though india vivisected pakistan in 1971, pakistan continues to see itself as india's equal and demands the world do the same. the tools that the army prefers to use, non-state actors under a nuclear umbrella, has brought international opprobrium upon the country and the army. in recent years, erstwhile proxies have turned their gun on the pakistani state itself and its peoples. why does the army persist in pursuing these revisionist policies that have come to imperil the very viability of the state itself, from which the army feeds? this volume argues that the answer lies, at least partially, in the strategic culture of the army. from the army's distorted view of history, the army is victorious as long as can resist india's purported hegemony and the territorial status quo. to acquiesce is defeat. because the army is unlikely to abandon these preferences, the world must prepare for an ever more dangerous future pakistan.

Description : Read Now Reimagining Pakistan Transforming A Dysfunctional Nuclear State by Husain Haqqani and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. salman rushdie once described pakistan as a 'poorly imagined country'. indeed, pakistan has meant different things to different people since its birth seventy years ago. armed with nuclear weapons and dominated by the military and militants, it is variously described around the world as 'dangerous', 'unstable', 'a terrorist incubator' and 'the land of the intolerant'. much of pakistan's dysfunction is attributable to an ideology tied to religion and to hostility with the country out of which it was carved out - india. but 95 per cent of pakistan's 210 million people were born after partition, as pakistanis, and cannot easily give up on their home. in his new book, husain haqqani, one of the most important commentators on pakistan in the world today, calls for a bold re-conceptualization of the country. reimagining pakistan offers a candid discussion of pakistan's origins and its current failings, with suggestions for reconsidering its ideology, and identifies a national purpose greater than the rivalry with india.

Description : Read Now Church Of Lies by Flora Jessop and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. from the preface: "my name is flora jessop. i've been called apostate, vigilante, and crazy bitch, and maybe i am. but some people call me a hero, and i'd like to think they're right too. if i am a hero, maybe it's because every time i can play a part in saving a child or a woman from a life of servitude and degradation, i'm saving a little piece of me, too. i was one of twenty-eight children born to my dad and his three wives. indoctrinated to believe that the outside world was evil, and that i resided among the righteous, i was destined to marry a man chosen for me by the prophet. i would then live in harmony with my sister-wives, bear many children, and obey and serve my future husband in this life and throughout eternity. but my innocence didn't last long. while still a child, i understood that the church of the righteous was nothing but a church of lies. when i was eight years old my father sexually molested me for the first time, raping me when i was twelve. i tried to kill myself. beaten, molested, taunted, and abused by family members alleging they only wanted to save my soul became a daily routine, i ran from this abuse more than once in my early teens--even attempting to cross the desert on foot. my family hunted me down. i thought government agencies would provide me safety if i reported my father. instead, police and social services colluded with the flds to return me to my family and i ended up back inside polygamy, right where i started." flora goes on from there to tell the dramatic true story of how she ultimately escaped and has been fighting against frustrating obstacles with hard fought successes in rescuing women and children from the flds. it's a story you can't put down.
