Description : Read Now Citizens Of Discord by Brian Breed and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. civil wars, more than other wars, sear themselves into the memory of societies that suffer them. this is particularly true at rome, where in a period of 150 years the romans fought four epochal wars against themselves. the present volume brings together exciting new perspectives on the subject by an international group of distinguished contributors. the basis of the investigation is broad, encompassing literary texts, documentary texts, and material culture, spanning the greek and roman worlds. attention is devoted not only to rome's four major conflicts from the period between the 80s bc and ad 69, but the frame extends to engage conflicts both previous and much later, as well as post-classical constructions of the theme of civil war at rome. divided into four sections, the first ("beginnings, endings") addresses the basic questions of when civil war began in rome and when it ended. "cycles" is concerned with civil war as a recurrent phenomenon without end. "aftermath" focuses on attempts to put civil war in the past, or, conversely, to claim the legacy of past civil wars, for better or worse. finally, the section "afterlife" provides views of rome's civil wars from more distant perspectives, from those found in augustan lyric and elegy to those in much later post-classical literary responses. as a whole, the collection sheds new light on the ways in which the roman civil wars were perceived, experienced, and represented across a variety of media and historical periods.

Description : Read Now Staging Memory Staging Strife by Lauren Donovan Ginsberg and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the turbulent decade of the 60s ce brought rome to the brink of collapse. it began with nero's ruthless elimination of julio-claudian rivals and ended in his suicide and the civil wars that followed. suddenly rome was forced to confront an imperial future as bloody as its republican past and a ruler from outside the house of caesar. the anonymous historical drama octavia is the earliest literary witness to this era of uncertainty and upheaval. in staging memory, staging strife, lauren donovan ginsberg offers a new reading of how the play intervenes in the contests over memory after nero's fall. though augustus and his heirs had claimed that the principate solved rome's curse of civil war, the play reimagines early imperial rome as a landscape of civil strife with a ruling family waging war both on itself and on its people. in doing so, the octavia shows how easily empire becomes a breeding ground for the passions of discord. in order to rewrite the history of rome's first imperial dynasty, the octavia engages with the literature of julio-claudian rome, using the words of rome's most celebrated authors to stage a new reading of that era and its ruling family. in doing so, the play opens a dialogue about literary versions of history and about the legitimacy of those historical accounts. through an innovative combination of intertextual analysis and cultural memory theory, ginsberg contextualizes the roles that literature and the literary manipulation of memory play in negotiating the transition between the julio-claudian and flavian regimes. her book claims for the octavia a central role in current debates over both the ways in which nero and his family were remembered as well as the politics of literary and cultural memory in the early roman empire.

Description : Read Now The Collapse Of Rome by Gareth C. Sampson and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. by the early first century bc, the roman republic had already carved itself a massive empire and was easily the most powerful state in the mediterranean. roman armies had marched victoriously over enemies far and wide, but the roman heartland was soon to feel the tramp of armies on campaign as the republic was convulsed by civil war and rival warlords vied for supremacy, sounding the first death knell of the republican system. at the centre of the conflict was the rivalry between marius, victor of the jugurthine and northern wars, and his former subordinate, sulla. but, as gareth sampson points out in this new analysis, the situation was much more complex than the traditional view portrays it and the scope of the first civil war both wider and longer. this narrative and analysis of a critical and bloody period in roman history will make an ideal sequel to the author's crisis of rome (and a prequel to his first book, the defeat of rome).
