Description : Read Now Climate Change And Food Security by Elizabeth Thomas Hope and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. global climatic change has resulted in new and unpredictable patterns of precipitation and temperature, the increased frequency of extreme weather events and rising sea levels. these changes impact all four aspects of food security – availability, accessibility, stability of supply and appropriate nourishment – as well as the entire food system – food production, marketing, processing, distribution and prices. climate change and food security focuses on the challenge to food security posed by a changing climate. the book brings together many of the critical global concerns of climate change and food security through local cases based on empirical studies undertaken in sub-saharan africa and the caribbean. focusing on risk reduction and the complex nature of vulnerability to climate change, the book includes chapters on the responsiveness of farmers based on traditional knowledge, as well as the critical phenomenon of food insecurity in the urban setting. other chapters are devoted to efforts made to strengthen resilience through long-term development, with interventions at the regional and national levels of scale. it also examines cross-cutting themes that underlie the strategies employed to achieve food security, including equity, gender, livelihoods and governance. this edited volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change, food security, environmental management and sustainable development.

Description : Read Now Climate Change And Food Security by David B. Lobell and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. roughly a billion people around the world continue to live in state of chronic hunger and food insecurity. unfortunately, efforts to improve their livelihoods must now unfold in the context of a rapidly changing climate, in which warming temperatures and changing rainfall regimes could threaten the basic productivity of the agricultural systems on which most of the world’s poor directly depend. but whether climate change represents a minor impediment or an existential threat to development is an area of substantial controversy, with different conclusions wrought from different methodologies and based on different data. this book aims to resolve some of the controversy by exploring and comparing the different methodologies and data that scientists use to understand climate’s effects on food security. in explains the nature of the climate threat, the ways in which crops and farmers might respond, and the potential role for public and private investment to help agriculture adapt to a warmer world. this broader understanding should prove useful to both scientists charged with quantifying climate threats, and policy-makers responsible for crucial decisions about how to respond. the book is especially suitable as a companion to an interdisciplinary undergraduate or graduate level class.

Description : Read Now Building A Resilient And Sustainable Agriculture In Sub Saharan Africa by Abebe Shimeles and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. what are the challenges and action points for agricultural sustainability in sub-saharan africa? this open access collection of papers offers technical analyses, policy recommendations and an overview of success stories to date. each carefully selected paper provides valuable insights for improved policy making and defines relevant strategic priorities on africa’s sustainable transformation process, which is in line with the international development agenda. although agriculture remains the main source of income for africa’s population, the sector is rain-fed subjecting it to the vagaries of weather and climate change. this volume demonstrates the rationale of developing a competitive, inclusive and sustainable agribusiness sector for africa’s food security and structural transformation. from the impact of bioenergy crop adoption and drought index insurance to agro-industrialization, this volume is important reading for individual researchers, academic associations and professional bodies interested in african agricultural development.

Description : Read Now Climate Smart Agriculture by Leslie Lipper and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book is open access under a cc by-nc-sa 3.0 igo license. the book uses an economic lens to identify the main features of climate-smart agriculture (csa), its likely impact, and the challenges associated with its implementation. drawing upon theory and concepts from agricultural development, institutional, and resource economics, this book expands and formalizes the conceptual foundations of csa. focusing on the adaptation/resilience dimension of csa, the text embraces a mixture of conceptual analyses, including theory, empirical and policy analysis, and case studies, to look at adaptation and resilience through three possible avenues: ex-ante reduction of vulnerability, increasing adaptive capacity, and ex-post risk coping. the book is divided into three sections. the first section provides conceptual framing, giving an overview of the csa concept and grounding it in core economic principles. the second section is devoted to a set of case studies illustrating the economic basis of csa in terms of reducing vulnerability, increasing adaptive capacity and ex-post risk coping. the final section addresses policy issues related to climate change. providing information on this new and important field in an approachable way, this book helps make sense of csa and fills intellectual and policy gaps by defining the concept and placing it within an economic decision-making framework. this book will be of interest to agricultural, environmental, and natural resource economists, development economists, and scholars of development studies, climate change, and agriculture. it will also appeal to policy-makers, development practitioners, and members of governmental and non-governmental organizations interested in agriculture, food security and climate change.

Description : Read Now The State Of Food Security And Nutrition In The World 2018 by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. new evidence this year corroborates the rise in world hunger observed in this report last year, sending a warning that more action is needed if we aspire to end world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. updated estimates show the number of people who suffer from hunger has been growing over the past three years, returning to prevailing levels from almost a decade ago. although progress continues to be made in reducing child stunting, over 22 percent of children under five years of age are still affected. other forms of malnutrition are also growing: adult obesity continues to increase in countries irrespective of their income levels, and many countries are coping with multiple forms of malnutrition at the same time – overweight and obesity, as well as anaemia in women, and child stunting and wasting. last year’s report showed that the failure to reduce world hunger is closely associated with the increase in conflict and violence in several parts of the world. in some countries, initial evidence showed climate-related events were also undermining food security and nutrition. this year’s report goes further to show that climate variability and extremes – even without conflict – are key drivers behind the recent rise in global hunger and one of the leading causes of severe food crises and their impact on people’s nutrition and health. climate variability and exposure to more complex, frequent and intense climate extremes are threatening to erode and reverse gains in ending hunger and malnutrition. furthermore, hunger is significantly worse in countries where agriculture systems are highly sensitive to rainfall, temperature and severe drought, and where the livelihood of a high proportion of the population depends on agriculture. the findings of this report reveal new challenges to ending hunger, food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition. there is an urgent need to accelerate and scale up actions that strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity of people and their livelihoods to climate variability and extremes. these and other findings are detailed in the 2018 edition of the state of food security and nutrition in the world.
