Description : Read Now Consuming The Entrepreneurial City by Anne Cronin, and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this collection offers a global perspective on the changing character of cities and the increasing importance that consumer culture plays in defining their symbolic economies. increasingly, forms of spectacle have come to shape how cities are imagined and to influence their character and the practices through which we know them - from advertising and the selling of real estate, to youth cultural consumption practices and forms of entrepreneurship, to the regeneration of urban areas under the guise of the heritage industry and the development of a wifi landscape. using examples of cities such as new york, sydney, atlantic city, barcelona, rio de janeiro, douala, liverpool, san juan, berlin and harbin this book illustrates how image and practice have become entangled in the performance of the symbolic economy. it also argues that it is not just how the urban present is being shaped in this way that is significant to the development of cities but also that a prominent feature of their development has been the spectacular imagining of the past as heritage and through regeneration. yet the ghosts that this conjures up in practice offer us a possible form of political unsettlement and alternative ways of viewing cities that is only just beginning to be explored. through this important collection by some of the leading analysts of consumption, cities and space consuming the entrepreneurial city offers a cutting edge analysis of the ways in which cities are developing and the implications this has for their future. it is essential reading for students of urban studies, geography, sociology, cultural studies, heritage studies and anthropology.

Description : Read Now Young Minds Rethinking The Mediterranean by no defined and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. throughout history, much has been written on why wars and crises occur and why human beings kill each other or are often so ready to do so. while some blame human nature, state structures or the anarchic order within the international system, others hold prejudices and the "othering" or dehumanizing of those different from us as being responsible. the region in which we live has particularly suffered a great deal from these violent processes. nationalist ideologies, most of which were defined in opposition to one another, alienated "others," abstracted them from their humanity, and made them subject to various kinds of tyranny. turks, bulgarians, greeks and many others had their share in this process of mutual alienation. across the euro-mediterranean region throughout history immigrations have been imposed, publics extorted, crises fomented, and interventions and wars suffered through. the study in your hands sheds light on the processes of "othering" and alienation in large part responsible for this troubled history. it serves as a tool through which the past and the future can be understood. and it examines prejudice, the largest obstacle facing turkey on its path to eu membership, while touching on various issues such as minority rights, the notion of culture, the role of symbols and other visual images in politics, the narration of culture within the capitalist order and its political outcomes, and finally the eu's mediterranean politics.

Description : Read Now Boardwalk Of Dreams by Bryant Simon and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. during the first half of the twentieth century, atlantic city was the nation's most popular middle-class resort--the home of the famed boardwalk, the miss america pageant, and the board game monopoly. by the late 1960s, it had become a symbol of urban decay and blight, compared by journalists to bombed-out dresden and war-torn beirut. several decades and a dozen casinos later, atlantic city is again one of america's most popular tourist spots, with thirty-five million visitors a year. yet most stay for a mere six hours, and the highway has replaced the boardwalk as the city's most important thoroughfare. today the city doesn't have a single movie theater and its one supermarket is a virtual fortress protected by metal detectors and security guards. in this wide-ranging book, bryant simon does far more than tell a nostalgic tale of atlantic city's rise, near death, and reincarnation. he turns the depiction of middle-class vacationers into a revealing discussion of the boundaries of public space in urban america. in the past, he argues, the public was never really about democracy, but about exclusion. during atlantic city's heyday, african americans were kept off the boardwalk and away from the beaches. the overly boisterous or improperly dressed were kept out of theaters and hotel lobbies by uniformed ushers and police. the creation of atlantic city as the "nation's playground" was dependent on keeping undesirables out of view unless they were pushing tourists down the boardwalk on rickshaw-like rolling chairs or shimmying in smoky nightclubs. desegregation overturned this racial balance in the mid-1960s, making the city's public spaces more open and democratic, too open and democratic for many middle-class americans, who fled to suburbs and suburban-style resorts like disneyworld. with the opening of the first casino in 1978, the urban balance once again shifted, creating twelve separate, heavily guarded, glittering casinos worlds walled off from the dilapidated houses, boarded-up businesses, and lots razed for redevelopment that never came. tourists are deliberately kept away from the city's grim reality and its predominantly poor african american residents. despite ten of thousands of buses and cars rolling into every day, gambling has not saved atlantic city or returned it to its glory days. simon's moving narrative of atlantic city's past points to the troubling fate of urban america and the nation's cultural trajectory in the twentieth century, with broad implications for those interested in urban studies, sociology, planning, architecture, and history.

Description : Read Now Cinema Builders by Edwin Heathcote and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the cinema is a space of transformation, the gatewary to a world of infinite possibilities. its architecture has had either to suggest the fantasy worlds which lie within or to reflect and magnify the vibrancy, the vision and the aspirations of the metropolis. the newness of the building type, the lack of precedent and the classlessness of the audience made the cinema the perfect vehicle for modern architecture. in this book edwin heathcote oulines the development of the cinema as a modern building type and traces the history and fashions which have prevailed in the most populist of architectures, from the fairground booth to the megaplex. the bulk of the book is taken up by a selective international survey of modern cinema design, from the blatantly commercial through the self-consciously kitsch to the avant-garde. it is the first book of recent years to set about defining the state of contemporary cinema, and acts as a guide to one of the fastest changing and most genuinely popular and responsive buiding types.

Description : Read Now Metapolitics by Alain Badiou and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in this follow-up to his highly acclaimed volume ethics, a searing critique of liberalism, alain badiou discusses the limits of political philosophy. metapolitics argues that one of the main tasks of contemporary thought is to abolish the idea that politics is merely an object for philosophical reflection. badiou indicts this approach, which reduces politics to a matter of opinion, thus eliminating any of its truly radical and emancipatory possibilities. against this intellectual tradition, badiou proposes instead the consideration of politics in terms of the production of truth and the affirmation of equality. he demands that the question of a possible "political truth" be separated from any notion of consensus or public opinion, and that political action be rethought in terms of the complex process that binds discussion to decision. starting from this analysis, badiou critically examines the thought of anthropologist and political theorist sylvain lazarus, jacques rancière's writings on workers' history and democratic dissensus, the role of the subject in althusser, as well as the concept of democracy and the link between truth and justice.
