Description : Read Now Covenant In The Persian Period by Richard J. Bautch, Gary N. Knoppers and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the 22 essays in this new and comprehensive study explore how notions of covenant, especially the sinaitic covenant, flourished during the neo-babylonian, persian, and early hellenistic periods. following the upheaval of the davidic monarchy, the temple's destruction, the disenfranchisement of the jerusalem priesthood, the deportation of judeans to other lands, the struggles of judeans who remained in the land, and the limited returns of some judean groups from exile, the covenant motif proved to be an increasingly influential symbol in judean intellectual life. the contributors to this volume, drawn from many different countries including canada, germany, israel, south africa, switzerland, and the united states, document how judean writers working within historiographic, levitical, prophetic, priestly, and sapiential circles creatively reworked older notions of covenant to invent a new way of understanding this idea. these writers examine how new conceptions of the covenant made between yhwh and israel at mt. sinai play a significant role in the process of early jewish identity formation. others focus on how transformations in the abrahamic, davidic, and priestly covenants responded to cultural changes within judean society, both in the homeland and in the diaspora. cumulatively, the studies of biblical writings, from genesis to chronicles, demonstrate how jewish literature in this period developed a striking diversity of ideas related to covenantal themes.

Description : Read Now Christ Meets Me Everywhere by Michael Cameron and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. most readers first encounter augustine's love for scripture's words in the many biblical allusions of his masterwork, the confessions. augustine does not merely quote texts, but in many ways makes scripture itself tell the story. in his journey from darkness to light, augustine becomes adam in the garden of eden, the prodigal son of jesus' parable, and the pauline double personality at once devoted to and rebellious against god's law. throughout he speaks the words of the psalms as if he had written them. crucial to augustine's self-portrayal is his skill at transposing himself into the texts. he sees their properties and dynamics as his own, and by extension, every believing reader's own. in christ meets me everywhere, michael cameron argues that augustine wanted to train readers of scripture to transpose themselves into the texts in the same way he did, by the same process of figuration that he found at scripture's core. augustine discovered this skill by learning to read scripture as a work of divine rhetoric that mirrors the humility of the human christ who forms humble readers to ascend its spiritual heights. tracking augustine's developing skill in reading scripture's figures as microcosms of the history of salvation during the first fifteen years of his christian life, cameron shows how christ's self-transposition into scripture's readers became the key to augustine's hermeneutics.

Description : Read Now The Old Testament Between Theology And History by Niels Peter Lemche and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. from its inception at the time of the enlightenment until the mid-twentieth century, the historical-critical method constituted the dominant paradigm in old testament studies. in this magisterial overview, niels peter lemche surveys the development of the historical-critical method and the way it changed the scholarly perception of the old testament. in part 1 he describes the rise and influence of historical-critical approaches, while in part 2 he traces their decline and fall. then, in part 3, he discusses the identity of the authors of the old testament, based on the content of the literature they wrote, demonstrating that the collapse of history does not preclude critical study. part 4 investigates the theological consequences of this collapse and surveys old testament and biblical theology in its various manifestations in the twentieth century. an appendix includes a history of palestine from the stone age to modern times, constructed without recourse to the old testament.

Description : Read Now Genesis 1 As Ancient Cosmology by John H. Walton and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the ancient near eastern mode of thought is not at all intuitive to us moderns, but our understanding of ancient perspectives can only approach accuracy when we begin to penetrate ancient texts on their own terms rather than imposing our own world view. in this task, we are aided by the ever-growing corpus of literature that is being recovered and analyzed. after an introduction that presents some of the history of comparative studies and how it has been applied to the study of ancient texts in general and cosmology in particular, walton focuses in the first half of this book on the ancient near eastern texts that inform our understanding about ancient ways of thinking about cosmology. of primary interest are the texts that can help us discern the parameters of ancient perspectives on cosmic ontology--that is, how the writers perceived origins. texts from across the ancient near east are presented, including primarily egyptian, sumerian, and akkadian texts, but occasionally also ugaritic and hittite, as appropriate. walton's intention, first of all, is to understand the texts but also to demonstrate that a functional ontology pervaded the cognitive environment of the ancient near east. this functional ontology involves more than just the idea that ordering the cosmos was the focus of the cosmological texts. he posits that, in the ancient world, bringing about order and functionality was the very essence of creative activity. he also pays close attention to the ancient ideology of temples to show the close connection between temples and the functioning cosmos. the second half of the book is devoted to a fresh analysis of genesis 1:1-2:4. walton offers studies of significant hebrew terms and seeks to show that the israelite texts evidence a functional ontology and a cosmology that is constructed with temple ideology in mind, as in the rest of the ancient near east. he contends that genesis 1 never was an account of material origins but that, as in the rest of the ancient world, the focus of "creation texts" was to order the cosmos by initiating functions for the components of the cosmos. he further contends that the cosmology of genesis 1 is founded on the premise that the cosmos should be understood in temple terms. all of this is intended to demonstrate that, when we read genesis 1 as the ancient document it is, rather than trying to read it in light of our own world view, the text comes to life in ways that help recover the energy it had in its original context. at the same time, it provides a new perspective on genesis 1 in relation to what have long been controversial issues. far from being a borrowed text, genesis 1 offers a unique theology, even while it speaks from the platform of its contemporaneous cognitive environment.

Description : Read Now Beginnings by Peter C. Bouteneff and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. what are we missing when we look at the creation narratives of genesis only or primarily through the lens of modern discourse about science and religion? theologian peter bouteneff explores how first-millennium christian understandings of creation can inform current thought in the church and in the public square. he reaches back into the earliest centuries of our era to recover the meanings that early jewish and christian writers found in the stories of the six days of creation and of adam and eve in the garden of eden. readers will find that their forbears in the faith saw in the genesis narrative not simply an account of origins but also a rich teaching about the righteousness of god, the saving mission of christ, and the destiny of the human creature.
