Description : Read Now Being Modern by Robert Bud and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in the early decades of the twentieth century, engagement with science was commonly used as an emblem of modernity. this phenomenon is now attracting increasing attention in different historical specialties. being modern builds on this recent scholarly interest to explore engagement with science across culture from the end of the nineteenth century to approximately 1940. addressing the breadth of cultural forms in britain and the western world from the architecture of le corbusier to working class british science fiction, being modern paints a rich picture. seventeen distinguished contributors from a range of fields including the cultural study of science and technology, art and architecture, english culture and literature examine the issues involved. the book will be a valuable resource for students, and a spur to scholars to further examination of culture as an interconnected web of which science is a critical part, and to supersede such tired formulations as 'science and culture'.

Albanese and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, mexicans and americans joined together to transform the u.s.-mexico borderlands into a crossroads of modern economic development. this book reveals the forgotten story of their ambitious dreams and their ultimate failure to control this fugitive terrain. focusing on a mining region that spilled across the arizona-sonora border, this book shows how entrepreneurs, corporations, and statesmen tried to domesticate nature and society within a transnational context. efforts to tame a 'wild' frontier were stymied by labour struggles, social conflict, and revolution. fugitive landscapes explores the making and unmaking of the u.s.-mexico border, telling how ordinary people resisted the domination of empires, nations, and corporations to shape transnational history on their own terms. by moving beyond traditional national narratives, it offers new lessons for our own border-crossing age.

Description : Read Now Cultural Memory Studies by Astrid Erll and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this handbook represents the interdisciplinary and international field of “cultural memory studies” for the first time in one volume. articles by renowned international scholars offer readers a unique overview of the key concepts of cultural memory studies. the handbook not only documents current research in an unprecedented way; it also serves as a forum for bringing together approaches from areas as varied as sociology, political sciences, history, theology, literary studies, media studies, philosophy, psychology, and neurosciences. “cultural memory studies” – as defined in this handbook – came into being at the beginning of the 20th century, with the works of maurice halbwachs on mémoire collective. in the course of the last two decades this area of research has witnessed a veritable boom in various countries and disciplines. as a consequence, the study of the relation of “culture” and “memory” has diversified into a wide range of approaches. this handbook is based on a broad understanding of “cultural memory” as the interplay of present and past in sociocultural contexts. it presents concepts for the study of individual remembering in a social context, group and family memory, national memory, the various media of memory, and finally the host of emerging transnational lieux de mémoire such as 9/11.

Description : Read Now Spatial And Temporal Dimensions For Legal History by Massimo Meccarelli and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. http://dx.doi.org/10.12946/gplh6http://www.epubli.de/shop/buch/53894"the spatiotemporal conjunction is a fundamental aspect of the juridical reflection on the historicity of law. despite the fact that it seems to represent an issue directly connected with the question of where legal history is heading today, it still has not been the object of a focused inquiry. against this background, the book’s proposal consists in rethinking key confluences related to this problem in order to provide coordinates for a collective understanding and dialogue. the aim of this volume, however, is not to offer abstract methodological considerations, but rather to rely both on concrete studies, out of which a reflection on this conjunction emerges, as well as on the reconstruction of certain research lines featuring a spatiotemporal component. this analytical approach makes a contribution by providing some suggestions for the employment of space and time as coordinates for legal history. indeed, contrary to those historiographical attitudes reflecting a monistic conception of space and time (as well as a eurocentric approach), the book emphasises the need for a delocalized global perspective. in general terms, the essays collected in this book intend to take into account the multiplicity of the spatiotemporal confines, the flexibility of those instruments that serve to create chronologies and scenarios, as well as certain processes of adaptation of law to different times and into different spaces. the spatiotemporal dynamism enables historians not only to detect new perspectives and dimensions in foregone themes, but also to achieve new and compelling interpretations of legal history. as far as the relationship between space and law is concerned, the book analyses experiences in which space operates as a determining factor of law, e.g. in terms of a field of action for law. moreover, it outlines the attempted scales of spatiality in order to develop legal historical research. with reference to the connection between time and law, the volume sketches the possibility of considering the factor of time, not just as a descriptive tool, but as an ascriptive moment (quasi an inner feature) of a legal problem, thus making it possible to appreciate the synchronic aspects of the ‘juridical experience’. as a whole, the volume aims to present spatiotemporality as a challenge for legal history. indeed, reassessing the value of the spatiotemporal coordinates for legal history implies thinking through both the thematic and methodological boundaries of the discipline."
