Description : Read Now Cultural Readings Of Restoration And Eighteenth Century English Theater by Deborah Payne Fisk and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. ranging in approach from feminist to historicist, the eleven essays in this collection share the culturalist premise that the drama of late stuart and early georgian england helped to constitute the dominant ideology of the period. the contributors' varied approaches allow for the reconsideration of libertinism, the politics of sexual desire, and other classic issues, as well as such newer concerns as the social construction of the first english actresses, empiricism as an emergent epistemological discourse, cultural anxiety about novelty and repetition, and shifting tropes of inherent worth. by reading well-known works in unexpected ways and focusing on less frequently studied dramatists, from sedley, motteux, pix, and behn to manley, trotter, and shadwell, the contributors also test the limits of the canon. in addition, they suggest that earlier critical perceptions, perhaps even more than the “innate worth” of the plays, determined the shape of the canon. these essays present a different image of restoration and eighteenth-century theater, one that reveals how the drama was a site as important for the negotiation of cultural meaning as were novels and verse satires.

Description : Read Now Character S Theater by Lisa A. Freeman and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. if the whole world acted the player, how did the player act the world? in character's theater, lisa a. freeman uses this question to test recent critical discussion of eighteenth-century literature and culture. much current work, she observes, focuses on the concept of theatricality as both the governing metaphor of social life and a primary filter of psychic perception. hume's "theater of the mind," adam smith's "impartial spectator," and diderot's "tableaux" are all invoked by theorists to describe a process whereby the private individual comes to internalize theatrical logic and apprehend the self as other. to them theatricality is a critical mechanism of modern subjectivity but one that needs to be concealed if the subject's stability is to be maintained. finding that much of this discussion about the "age of the spectator" has been conducted without reference to the play texts or actual theatrical practice, freeman turns to drama and discovers a dynamic model of identity based on eighteenth-century conceptualizations of character. in contrast to the novel, which cultivated psychological tensions between private interiority and public show, dramatic characters in the eighteenth century experienced no private thoughts. the theater of the eighteenth century was not a theater of absorption but rather a theater of interaction, where what was monitored was not the depth of character, as in the novel, but the arc of a genre over the course of a series of discontinuous acts. in a genre-by-genre analysis of plays about plays, tragedy, comedies of manners, humours, and intrigue, and sentimental comedy, freeman offers an interpretive account of eighteenth-century drama and its cultural work and demonstrates that by deploying an alternative model of identity, theater marked a site of resistance to the rise of the subject and to the ideological conformity enforced through that identity formation.

Description : Read Now Broken Boundaries by Katherine M. Quinsey and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this volume of twelve original essays is the first comprehensive study of feminist issues in restoration drama. the late seventeenth century marks a pivotal era in the history of feminism, when renaissance assumptions about gender and patriarchy were being directly challenged. for the first time, women appeared onstage as actresses, made their presence felt as spectators and patrons, and wrote a number of the plays produced in theaters. in an unusually direct and probing way, drama of the restoration period raised radical questions about the place of women in the family and in society, and about the essential nature of men and women. the essays examine feminist issues from a variety of historical and theoretical approaches across a spectrum of plays -- comedies, tragedies, tragicomedies, and heroic drama. by addressing the acute questions of gender raised in the drama, broken boundaries presents a vivid portrait of the uncertainties and changing perceptions in all areas of intellectual, political, and social life during the last decades of the seventeenth century.

Description : Read Now Prologues Epilogues Curtain Raisers And Afterpieces by Daniel James Ennis and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. prologues, epilogues, curtain-raisers, and afterpieces: the rest of the eighteenth-century london stage presents a fresh analysis of the complete theater evening that was available to playhouse audiences from the restoration to the early nineteenth century. the contributing scholars focus not on the mainpiece, the advertised play itself, but on what surrounded the mainpiece for the "total" theater experience of the day. various critical essays address artistic disciplines such as dance and theatrical portraits, while others concentrate on peripheral performance texts, including prologues, epilogues, pantomimes, and afterpieces, that merged to define the overall theatrical event.

Description : Read Now Moral Reform In Comedy And Culture 1696 1747 by Dr Aparna Gollapudi and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in the first half of the eighteenth century, a new comic plot formula dramatizing the moral reform of a flawed protagonist emerged on the english stage. the comic reform plot was not merely a generic turn towards morality or sentimentality, aparna gollapudi argues, but an important social mechanism for controlling and challenging political and economic changes. gollapudi looks at reform comedies by dramatists such as colley cibber, susanna centlivre, richard steele, charles johnson, and benjamin hoadly in relation to emergent trends in finance capitalism, imperial nationalism, political factionalism, domestic ideology, and middling class-consciousness. within the context of the cultural anxieties engendered by these developments, gollapudi suggests, the reform comedies must be seen not as clichéd and moralistic productions but as responses to vital ideological shifts and cultural transvaluations that impose a reassuring moral schema on everyday conduct. thoroughly researched and elegantly written, gollapudi's study shows that reform comedies covered a range of contemporary concerns from party politics to domestic harmony and are crucial for understanding eighteenth-century literature and culture.

Description : Read Now The Broadview Anthology Of Restoration And Early Eighteenth Century Drama by J. Douglas Canfield and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this is the first new full-scale anthology of restoration and eighteenth-century drama in over sixty years. concentrating on plays from the heyday of 1660-1737, it focuses especially on restoration drama proper (1660-1688) and revolution drama (1689-1714), with a smaller selection of plays from the early georgian period (1715-1737) and a glimpse at the later georgian period’s “laughing comedy” (1770s and 80s). it includes nine sub-genres (heroic romance, political tragedy, personal tragedy, tragicomic romance, social comedy, subversive comedy, corrective satire, menippean satire, and laughing comedy), with the preponderance of exposure given to the jewel of this theatre, its comedy. the core canonical plays from the era—from dryden’s all for love and behn’s the rover to congreve’s the way of the world and sheridan’s school for scandal—are all here, but so are a remarkably wide range of non-canonical works. there are many more plays by women than in any previous general anthology of drama of the period. also included are a number of works from the neglected 1660s, whose comedies feature delightful, subversive, levelling folk elements. in all there are forty-one plays; each is fully annotated and prefaced with an historical introduction. also included are a general introduction, head-notes for each genre, and a glossary.

'the series should shape the canon in a number of significant areas. a splendid and imaginative project.' professor anne barton, cambridge university
