Description : Read Now Crime Scenes by Anne Mullen and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the essays in this collection are based on papers given at a conference on detective fiction in european culture, held at the university of exeter in september 1997. the range of topics covered is designed to show not only the presence and variety of narratives of detection across different european countries and their different media (although there is a predictable emphasis on the novel). it also illustrates the fertility of the genre, its openness to a spectrum of readings with different emphases, formal as well as thematic. approaches to detective fiction have often tended to confine them-selves to 'symptomatic' interpretation, where details of the fictional world represented are used to diagnose a specific set of social preoccupations and priorities operative at the time of writing. such approaches can yield valuable insights. nonetheless there is a risk of limiting the value of the genre as a whole solely to its role as a mirror held up to society. in this perspective, issues of structure and style are sidelined, or, if addressed, are praised to the extent that they approach invisibility — concision, spareness, realism are the qualities singled out for praise. the genre also gives much scope for formal innovation — and indeed has often attracted already established 'mainstream' writers and filmmakers for just this reason.the eclectic diversity of the detective narratives considered in this volume reveal the malleability of the traditional constraints of the genre. the essays bear rich testimony to the value of considering the interplay of thematic and structural issues, even in the most apparently unselfconscious and popular (or populist) forms of narrative. the patterns of reassurance, the triumph of intellect and the ordered, rational world 'of old' are now challenged by the need to foreground the problems, ambiguities and uncertainties of the self and of society. the plurality of meanings and the antithetical imperatives explored in these detective narratives confirm that the most recent forms of the genre are not mere palimpsests of their 'golden age' precursors. the subversion of traditional expectations and the implementation of diverse stylistic devices take the genre beyond mere homage and pastiche. the role of the reader/spectator and critic in conferring meaning is a crucial one.

Description : Read Now Dictators Democracy And American Public Culture by Benjamin L. Alpers and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. focusing on portrayals of mussolini's italy, hitler's germany, and stalin's russia in u.s. films, magazine and newspaper articles, books, plays, speeches, and other texts, benjamin alpers traces changing american understandings of dictatorship from the late 1920s through the early years of the cold war. during the early 1930s, most americans' conception of dictatorship focused on the dictator. whether viewed as heroic or horrific, the dictator was represented as a figure of great, masculine power and effectiveness. as the great depression gripped the united states, a few people--including conservative members of the press and some hollywood filmmakers--even dared to suggest that dictatorship might be the answer to america's social problems. in the late 1930s, american explanations of dictatorship shifted focus from individual leaders to the movements that empowered them. totalitarianism became the image against which a view of democracy emphasizing tolerance and pluralism and disparaging mass movements developed. first used to describe dictatorships of both right and left, the term "totalitarianism" fell out of use upon the u.s. entry into world war ii. with the war's end and the collapse of the u.s.-soviet alliance, however, concerns about totalitarianism lay the foundation for the emerging cold war.

Description : Read Now Bodie Gone by Bill Hyde and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. frances tip dequill -- affluent housewife, mother, and sometimes newspaper writer -- was mortified when the iron door clanked shut. yes, she was locked up in the bridgeport jail. imprisonment marked the beginning of the price she would pay for investigating a sequence of ominous, unlikely events that had occurred close to bridgeport and the nearby ghost town of bodie, california.frances had been obsessed trying to unravel the mystery of the strange things that had happened, much like prospectors who had been driven to seek bodie's veda madre. no warnings, no threats, and not even jail could divert her attention. her quest for a story would take her back in time to the gold rush days and urge her to chronicle the stories of eight strangers who had struggled to reach bodie seeking gold, love, lust, adventure or revenge. her strangers would interact with some of the best known characters from the old west and they would experience many historical happenings. but nothing they suffered would prepare them for their bizarre departure from bodie.would frances find the truth? could she escape her hunters? would she have time to expose the cover-up and find the real meaning of bodie gone?

Description : Read Now Bob Dylan S Poetics by Timothy Hampton and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. a close examination of bob dylan's songs that locates his transgressive style within a long history of modern (and modernist) art. the 2016 nobel prize in literature recognized bob dylan as a major modern artist, elevating his work beyond the world of popular music. in this book, timothy hampton focuses on the details and nuances of dylan's songs, showing how they work as artistic statements designed to create meaning and elicit emotion. with bob dylan's poetics, hampton offers a unique examination of both the poetics and politics of dylan's compositions. he studies dylan not as a pop hero, but as an artist, as a maker of songs. focusing on the interplay of music and lyric, hampton traces dylan's innovative use of musical form, his complex manipulation of poetic diction, and his dialogues with other artists, from woody guthrie to arthur rimbaud. moving from dylan's earliest experiments with the blues through his mastery of rock and country to his densely allusive more recent recordings, hampton offers a detailed account of dylan's achievement. locating dylan in the long history of artistic modernism, he examines the relationships among form, genre, and the political and social themes that crisscross dylan's work. with this book, hampton offers both a nuanced engagement with the work of a major artist and a meditation on the contribution of song at times of political and social change.
