Description : Read Now Islam Democracy And Dialogue In Turkey by Bora Kanra and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. most theorists of deliberative democracy treat deliberation as a procedure in decision-making. this approach neglects an important phase oriented not so much to decision-making but to social learning and understanding. combining deliberative theory with research from social psychology, bora kanra has developed an innovative critique and synthesis by allocating social learning its own formal sphere. for deliberative democracy to produce better outcomes, decision-making needs to be reinforced by opportunities for social learning. stressing the importance of the development of democratic dialogue in divided societies, kanra tests his claims of a new deliberative framework by analyzing interaction between islamic and secular discourses in the turkish public sphere. this in-depth analysis of converging and diverging political beliefs and traditions between seculars and islamists emphasizes the importance of social learning in a sharply divided society. a groundbreaking and illuminating insight into the prospects for democratic development in turkey, islam, democracy and dialogue in turkey reveals an emerging dynamic in turkish politics representing a new opening in political practice.

"this handbook, sponsored jointly by international idea, the united nations development programme (undp), the organization of american states (oas) and the canadian international development agency (cida), offers a comprehensive overview of the use of dialogue processes to address societal challenges in an inclusive, democratic way that engages a broad range of actors in bringing about positive change. it is addressed to people actively or potentially engaged in doing dialogue work--organizing, sponsoring, promoting, or facilitating dialogue processes within their institutions and societies. most importantly, it is thoroughly grounded in the experience of dialogue practitioners from around the world. the handbook provides a conceptual framework that speaks to critical questions: 'why dialogue?', 'what is dialogue?' and 'how does dialogue contribute to positive change?'. it offers a detailed guide to putting these concepts into practice, offering practical guidance and concrete examples from the field for each step: exploring whether a dialogue process is appropriate in the context; designing and then implementing a dialogue process; and conducting a meaningful process of monitoring and evaluation throughout. a third major part of the book anchors all of this information in the reality of three fully developed case studies showing different approaches in different regions--latin america, africa and asia. in two appendices, the handbook also provides a comparative overview of more than 30 cases and a guide to the rich array of dialogue processes and process tools that practitioners can consider for use, or just for inspiration."--p. Description : Read Now Dialogue Across Difference by Patricia Gurin and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. due to continuing immigration and increasing racial and ethnic inclusiveness, higher education institutions in the united states are likely to grow ever more diverse in the 21st century. this shift holds both promise and peril: increased inter-ethnic contact could lead to a more fruitful learning environment that encourages collaboration. on the other hand, social identity and on-campus diversity remain hotly contested issues that often raise intergroup tensions and inhibit discussion. how can we help diverse students learn from each other and gain the competencies they will need in an increasingly multicultural america? dialogue across difference synthesizes three years’ worth of research from an innovative field experiment focused on improving intergroup understanding, relationships and collaboration. the result is a fascinating study of the potential of intergroup dialogue to improve relations across race and gender. first developed in the late 1980s, intergroup dialogues bring together an equal number of students from two different groups – such as people of color and white people, or women and men – to share their perspectives and learn from each other. to test the possible impact of such courses and to develop a standard of best practice, the authors of dialogue across difference incorporated various theories of social psychology, higher education, communication studies and social work to design and implement a uniform curriculum in nine universities across the country. unlike most studies on intergroup dialogue, this project employed random assignment to enroll more than 1,450 students in experimental and control groups, including in 26 dialogue courses and control groups on race and gender each. students admitted to the dialogue courses learned about racial and gender inequalities through readings, role-play activities and personal reflections. the authors tracked students’ progress using a mixed-method approach, including longitudinal surveys, content analyses of student papers, interviews of students, and videotapes of sessions. the results are heartening: over the course of a term, students who participated in intergroup dialogues developed more insight into how members of other groups perceive the world. they also became more thoughtful about the structural underpinnings of inequality, increased their motivation to bridge differences and intergroup empathy, and placed a greater value on diversity and collaborative action. the authors also note that the effects of such courses were evident on nearly all measures. while students did report an initial increase in negative emotions – a possible indication of the difficulty of openly addressing race and gender – that effect was no longer present a year after the course. overall, the results are remarkably consistent and point to an optimistic conclusion: intergroup dialogue is more than mere talk. it fosters productive communication about and across differences in the service of greater collaboration for equity and justice. ambitious and timely, dialogue across difference presents a persuasive practical, theoretical and empirical account of the benefits of intergroup dialogue. the data and research presented in this volume offer a useful model for improving relations among different groups not just in the college setting but in the united states as well.

Description : Read Now Deliberative Democracy In Practice by David Kahane and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. deliberative democracy is a dominant paradigm in normative political philosophy. deliberative democrats want politics to be more than a clash of contending interests, and they believe political decisions should emerge from reasoned dialogue among citizens. but can these ideals be realized in complex and unjust societies? this book brings together leading scholars who explore debates in deliberative democratic theory in four areas of practice: education, constitutions and state boundaries, indigenous-settler relations, and citizen participation and public consultation. this dynamic volume casts new light on the strengths and limitations of deliberative democratic theory, offering guidance to policy makers and to students and scholars interested in democratic justice.

Description : Read Now The Democratic Theory Of Hans Georg Gadamer by Darren Walhof and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book examines the distinctive contribution that the writings of hans-georg gadamer make to democratic theory. walhof argues that gadamer’s hermeneutical philosophy enlarges our perspective by shifting our view away from individual citizens to what exists between citizens, thereby allowing us to envision political realities that are otherwise hard to see. these realities include the disclosure of truth in democratic politics; achieving common ground in democratic dialogue, even amidst significant disagreement and diversity; the public and political nature of the religious traditions that make claims on and shape citizens; and the solidarities that connect us to each other and enable democratic action. the author argues that bringing these dimensions to awareness enriches our theories of democracy and is particularly crucial in an era of hyper-partisanship, accelerating inequality, and social conflicts involving racial, sexual, and religious identities.

Description : Read Now Democracy Dialogue Memory by Idit Alphandary and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. arguing that the politics of democracy is inseparable from a notion of dialogue that emerges from conflicting and often traumatic memories, democracy, dialogue, memory examines the importance of dialogue for the achievement of understanding in civil society rather than consensus, so that democratic participation and inclusion can be strengthened. with attention to the importance for marginalized communities of the ability to disclose fundamental ethnic, religious, gendered, racial, or personal and affective characteristics born of trauma, and so cease to represent "otherness," this book brings together studies from europe, israel and the united states of literary and visual attempts to expand dialogue with "the other," particularly where democracies are prone to vacillating between the desire to endorse otherness, and political dread of the other. a critique of the practices of forced inclusion and forced consensual negotiation, that seeks to advance dialogue as a crucial safeguard against the twin dangers of exclusion and enforced assimilation, democracy, dialogue, memory will appeal to scholars with interests in political theory, political sociology, collective and contested memory and civil society at the same time as allowing scholars from the humanities and the arts to examine seminal chapters that pivot on psychoanalytical approaches to literature, film and philosophy at the borderline of political thinking.

Description : Read Now Between The Theory And Practice Of Democracy In Nigeria by Elochukwu C. Amucheazi and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. obasanjo's first term in office as a civilian president (1999 - 2003) was a major litmus test for the future of nigeria's fledgling democracy. set in a critical conjuncture characterized by high popular expectations and international goodwill on the one hand and weak institutions and deep-seated social cleavages exacerbated by years of military rule on the other, the new civilian governments at the federal and state levels were expected to quickly deliver the "dividends of democracy" to prevent an authoritarian throwback. the expectations included a quick improvement in social service delivery, ending egregious human rights violations of the military era, improving infrastructure, strengthening institutions of governance and creating jobs. but how did the obasanjo regime fare in meeting the citizens' expectations in its first term in office? what were the challenges faced by practitioners in all the branches and levels of government in achieving their electoral promises and public expectations? and how did they respond to those challenges? in this book, some of nigeria's leading academics dialogue with politicians who hold or have held key political positions, including governor ibrahim idris of kogi state, former state governors orji kalu, sam egwu and chris ngige, as well as other key political practitioners to find answers to some of the above questions. the contributors address numerous thorny issues in nigerian politics and governance including federalism and presidentialism, elections and the electoral process, the judiciary and courts, parties and the party system, the economy, as well as foreign policy. specifically, they address the issues of executive-legislative relations, executive-judiciary relations, party-government relations, federal and state relations and the relations between president obasanjo and state governors that he regarded as recalcitrant. the book is unique in that it departs from the conventional academic balance sheet approach of matching popular expectations against government's service delivery to actually incorporate the views and experiences of the practitioners in the field. this is done not for self-justificatory purposes, but to genuinely articulate and perspectivise the challenges the practitioners faced and their own efforts at coping with such challenges. ____________________________________________ elo amucheazi is a distinguished retired professor of political science at the university of nigeria, nsukka and former director-general of national orientation in nigeria. he is currently adjunct professor of political science at the nnamdi azikiwe university, awka and pro-chancellor and chairman of council of the anambra state university. he has published widely on nigerian politics, including the classic study of pressure group politics in nigeria entitled church and politics in eastern nigeria (1986) okechukwu ibeanu is professor of political science and dean of the faculty of social sciences at the university of nigeria, nsukka. he is also the special rapporteur of the united nations human rights council on the adverse effects of toxic wastes on the enjoyment of human rights. he has published extensively on conflict and security issues in the niger delta, including civil society and conflict management in the niger delta (2005) and oiling violence (2006), which is on the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the niger delta. his latest book is election and the future of democracy in nigeria (2007).
