Description : Read Now Exchanges In Exoticism by Megan Moore and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. charting important new territory within medieval gender studies, megan moore explores the vital role that women played in transmitting knowledge and empire within mediterranean cross-cultural marriages. whereas cross-cultural exchange has typically been understood through the lens of male-centered translation work, this study, which is grounded in the relations between the west and byzantium, examines cross-cultural marriage as a medium of literary and cultural exchange, one in which women's work was equally important as men's. moore's readings of old french and medieval greek texts reveal the extent to which women challenged the cultures into which they married and shaped their new courtly environments. through the lens of medieval gender and postcolonial theory, exchanges in exoticism demonstrates how the process of cultural exchange – and empire building – extends well beyond our traditional assumptions about gender roles in the medieval mediterranean.

Description : Read Now Art And Exoticism by Paul van der Grijp and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book is about the yearning for authenticity via art and exoticism. exoticism related to art cannot be reduced to primitivism alone and also encompasses a search in one's own unconsciousness among other things. the yearning for authenticity through exoticism is explored in a cultural anthropological perspective in the realms of western philosophy (capita selecta) and colonial literature, currents of art, and in the appreciation of western art conceptions in non-western societies. an array of firsthand ethnographic illustrations of art production in asian and pacific societies demonstrates complementary processes in the non-western world. a major hypothesis is that exoticism is closely related to, and often motivated by eroticism, a reason why exoticism should be considered as gendered. case studies of the falsification of authentic art, the de-sacralization of sacred objects, and of the use of natural materials deriving from endangered species complete the analysis.

Description : Read Now The Postcolonial Exotic by Graham Huggan and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. travel writing, it has been said, helped produce the rest of the world for a western audience. could the same be said more recently of postcolonial writing? in the postcolonial exotic, graham huggan examines some of the processes by which value is attributed to postcolonial works within their cultural field. using varied methods of analysis, huggan discusses both the exoticist discourses that run through postcolonial studies, and the means by which postcolonial products are marketed and domesticated for western consumption. global in scope, the book takes in everything from: * the latest 'indo-chic' to the history of the heinemann african writers series * from the celebrity stakes of the booker prize to those of the us academic star-system *from canadian multicultural anthologies to australian 'tourist novels'. this timely and challenging volume points to the urgent need for a more carefully grounded understanding of the processes of production, dissemination and consumption that have surrounded the rapid development of the postcolonial field.

Description : Read Now Inventing Exoticism by Benjamin Schmidt and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. as early modern europe launched its multiple projects of global empire, it simultaneously embarked on an ambitious program of describing and picturing the world. the shapes and meanings of the extraordinary global images that emerged from this process form the subject of this highly original and richly textured study of cultural geography. inventing exoticism draws on a vast range of sources from history, literature, science, and art to describe the energetic and sustained international engagements that gave birth to our modern conceptions of exoticism and globalism. illustrated with more than two hundred images of engravings, paintings, ceramics, and more, inventing exoticism shows, in vivid example and persuasive detail, how europeans came to see and understand the world at an especially critical juncture of imperial imagination. at the turn to the eighteenth century, european markets were flooded by books and artifacts that described or otherwise evoked non-european realms: histories and ethnographies of overseas kingdoms, travel narratives and decorative maps, lavishly produced tomes illustrating foreign flora and fauna, and numerous decorative objects in the styles of distant cultures. inventing exoticism meticulously analyzes these, while further identifying the particular role of the dutch—"carryers of the world," as defoe famously called them—in the business of exotica. the form of early modern exoticism that sold so well, as this book shows, originated not with expansion-minded imperialists of london and paris, but in the canny ateliers of holland. by scrutinizing these materials from the perspectives of both producers and consumers—and paying close attention to processes of cultural mediation—inventing exoticism interrogates traditional postcolonial theories of knowledge and power. it proposes a wholly revisionist understanding of geography in a pivotal age of expansion and offers a crucial historical perspective on our own global culture as it engages in a media-saturated world.

Description : Read Now Gender In The Premodern Mediterranean by Moore and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. drawing upon literary, historical, and visual evidence, this collection of interdisciplinary essays examines how the mediterranean shaped practices of gender in the premodern era. this volume bridges the gap between gender studies and mediterranean studies, which have a natural fit with each other in their interest on defining identity carefully through connectivity and attentiveness to cultural hegemonies. the essays in this volume build off of this double approach to offer a unique contribution to the field, and use gender to understand the mediterranean and the mediterranean to understand premodern gender. whereas other volumes have examined gender in the premodern period or premodern mediterranean studies, to date no other volume has sought to explore the intersection of the two. the interdisciplinary nature of the essays will make them useful to both scholars and teachers, for they will combine theory and practice in a length that makes them easily accessible to advanced students as well as specialized researchers. the first chapter provides a critical overview of the scholarship on mediterranean studies as a field of area studies as well as an overview of gender studies in the medieval period. as such, the volume will be useful for students, teachers, and researchers, and its interdisciplinary nature reflects the diaspora of the mediterranean itself.

Description : Read Now Discourses Of Postcolonialism In Contemporary British Children S Literature by Blanka Grzegorczyk and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book considers how contemporary british children’s books engage with some of the major cultural debates of recent years, and how they resonate with the current preoccupations and tastes of the white mainstream british reading public. a central assumption of this volume is that britain’s imperial past continues to play a key role in its representations of race, identity, and history. the insistent inclusion of questions relating to colonialism and power structures in recent children’s novels exposes the complexities and contradictions surrounding the fictional treatment of race relations and ethnicity. postcolonial children’s literature in britain has been inherently ambivalent since its cautious beginnings: it is both transgressive and authorizing, both undercutting and excluding. grzegorczyk considers the ways in which children’s fictions have worked with and against particular ideologies of race. the texts analyzed in this collection portray ethnic minorities as complex, hybrid products of colonialism, global migrations, and the ideology of multiculturalism. by examining the ideological content of these novels, grzegorczyk demonstrates the centrality of the colonial past to contemporary british writing for the young.
