Description : Read Now Co Benefits Of Sustainable Forestry by Kanehiro Kitayama and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. tropical rain forests are increasingly expected to serve for climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation amid global climate change and increasing human demands for land. natural production forests that are legally designated to produce timber occur widely in the southeast asian tropics. synergizing timber production, climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation in such tropical production forests is one of the most realistic means to resolve these contemporary global problems. next-generation sustainable forest management is being practiced in the natural tropical rain forest of a model site in sabah, malaysian borneo, while earlier sustainable management practices have generally failed, leading to extensive deforestation and forest degradation elsewhere in the tropics. ecologists have examined co-benefits of sustainable forestry in the model forest in terms of forest regeneration, carbon sequestration and biodiversity in comparison to a forest managed by destructive conventional methods. taxonomic groups studied have included trees, decomposers, soil microbes, insects and mammals. a wide array of field methods and technology has been used including count plots, sensor cameras, and satellite remote-sensing. this book is a compilation of the results of those thorough ecological investigations and elucidates ecological processes of tropical rain forests after logging. the book furnishes useful information for foresters and conservation ngos, and it also provides baseline information for biologists and ecologists. a further aim is to examine the environmental effects of a forest certification scheme as the model forest has been certified by the forest stewardship council. taken as a whole, this book proves that the desired synergy is possible.

Description : Read Now Forest Wildlife Ecology And Habitat Management by David R. Patton and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. across the continental united states, one can identify 20 distinct forest cover types. most of these are to be found on federal lands managed by the u.s. forest service and bureau of land management. those responsible for the management of trees that form the 20 different cover types and the diversity of forest wildlife that reside in them must have a solid grounding in concepts of forest management, especially silviculture, as well as concepts of wildlife management, in order to integrate both as part of any effective natural resource management plan. forest wildlife ecology and habitat management provides both foresters and wildlife biologists responsible for managing forest resources with an integrated understanding of the relationship between forests and wildlife. based on david patton’s 50 years of experience as a forester and wildlife biologist, the book shows readers how to look at forests as ecological systems and wildlife as part of the energy flow and nutrient cycling process within those systems. he offers readers a fundamental understanding of the natural processes that occur in a forest taking into consideration vegetation, water, and the natural effects of climate and time. he then provides a biological perspective on wildlife, discussing reproduction, behavior, feeding habits, and mobility. he also discusses the various influences on forests and wildlife by both natural and human-caused events. covering those forest types included in the u.s. national atlas, and associating over 1,100 wildlife species with 20 major forest types in 48 states, professor patton provides recommendations for ways to restore and maintain wildlife habitat by direct and indirect coordination. towards this end, the author — evaluates various approaches to integrate forestry and wildlife management offers a number of practical management strategies, emphasizing a progressive holistic approach presents the faawn (forest attributes and wildlife needs) data model a cd-rom is included that provides readers with easy-to-use software that will help them consider more than 63,000 potential associations among forest components and wildlife within the faawn model.

Lindenmayer and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. while most efforts at biodiversity conservation have focused primarily on protected areas and reserves, the unprotected lands surrounding those area--the "matrix"--are equally important to preserving global biodiversity and maintaining forest health. in conserving forest biodiversity, leading forest scientists david b. lindenmayer and jerry f. franklin argue that the conservation of forest biodiversity requires a comprehensive and multiscaled approach that includes both reserve and nonreserve areas. they lay the foundations for such a strategy, bringing together the latest scientific information on landscape ecology, forestry, conservation biology, and related disciplines as they examine:the importance of the matrix in key areas of ecology such as metapopulation dynamics, habitat fragmentation, and landscape connectivitygeneral principles for matrix managementusing natural disturbance regimes to guide human disturbancelandscape-level and stand-level elements of matrix management the role of adaptive management and monitoringsocial dimensions and tensions in implementing matrix-based forest managementin addition, they present five case studies that illustrate aspects and elements of applied matrix management in forests. the case studies cover a wide variety of conservation planning and management issues from north america, south america, and australia, ranging from relatively intact forest ecosystems to an intensively managed plantation.conserving forest biodiversity presents strategies for enhancing matrix management that can play a vital role in the development of more effective approaches to maintaining forest biodiversity. it examines the key issues and gives practical guidelines for sustained forest management, highlighting the critical role of the matrix for scientists, managers, decisionmakers, and other stakeholders involved in efforts to sustain biodiversity and ecosystem processes in forest landscapes.

Description : Read Now Environmental Ethics And Forestry by Peter C. List and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. during the past twenty-five years, north american forestry has received increasingly vigorous scrutiny. critics including the environmentalists, environmental scientists, representatives of public interest groups, and many individual citizens have expressed concerns about forestry's basic assumptions and methods, as well as its practical outcomes. criticism has centered on such issues as the exploitation of forests for timber production, the reduction and fragmentation of old-growth habitats, the destruction of biodiversity, the degradation of grasslands through grazing practices, lack of government attention to recreation facilities, silvicultural methods like clearcutting and the use of herbicides and pesticides, the exportation of industrial forestry techniques to other parts of the world, and the use of public monies to provide services for private resouce companies, as in the creation of logging roads. this rising tide of public scrutiny has led many foresters to suspect that their "contract" with society to manage forests using their best professional judgment had been undermined. some of these professionals, as well as some of their critics, have begun to reexamine their old beliefs and to look for new ways of practicing forestry. part of this reflective process has entailed new directions in environmental ethics and environmental philosophy. this reader brings together some of the new thinking in this area. here students of the applied environmental and natural resource sciences, as well as the interested general reader, will discover a rich sampling of writings in environmental ethics and philosophy as they apply to forestry. readings focus on basic ethical systems in forestry and forest management, philosophical issues in forestry ethics, codes of ethics in forestry and related natural resource sciences such as fisheries science and wildlife biology, aldo leopold's land ethic in forestry, ethical advocacy and whistleblowing in government resource agencies, the ethics of new forestry, ecoforestry, and public debate in forestry, as well as ethical issues in global forestry such as the responsibilities of forest corporations, environmentalists, and individual wood consumers. this volume contains materials from the founders of forestry ethics, such as bernhard fernow, giford pinchot, john muir, and aldo leopold; from such organizations as the society of american foresters, the wildlife society, the american fisheries society, forest service employees for environmental ethics, and the ecoforesters group, in addition to writings by a variety of well-known environmental philosophers and foresters, including holmes rolston, robin attfield, lawrence johnson, michael mcdonald, paul wood, james e. coufal, raymond craig, kristin shrader-frechette, jeff debonis, jim l. bowyer, alasdair gunn, goug gaigle, alan g. mcquillan, stephanie kaza, alan dregson, duncan taylor, and kathleen dean moore. author note: peter c. list is professor of philosophy at oregon state university, where he teaches courses on environmental ethics, ethical issues in the natural resource sciences, and sustainable forestry. he is the author of articles on aldo leopold's land ethic, and co-author of several articles on public attitudes about federal forests and forest management, published in the journal of forestry and society and natural resources.
