Description : Read Now The Craft Of Research 2nd Edition by Wayne C. Booth and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. since 1995, more than 150,000 students and researchers have turned to the craft of research for clear and helpful guidance on how to conduct research and report it effectively . now, master teachers wayne c. booth, gregory g. colomb, and joseph m. williams present a completely revised and updated version of their classic handbook. like its predecessor, this new edition reflects the way researchers actually work: in a complex circuit of thinking, writing, revising, and rethinking. it shows how each part of this process influences the others and how a successful research report is an orchestrated conversation between a researcher and a reader. along with many other topics, the craft of research explains how to build an argument that motivates readers to accept a claim; how to anticipate the reservations of thoughtful yet critical readers and to respond to them appropriately; and how to create introductions and conclusions that answer that most demanding question, "so what?" celebrated by reviewers for its logic and clarity, this popular book retains its five-part structure. part 1 provides an orientation to the research process and begins the discussion of what motivates researchers and their readers. part 2 focuses on finding a topic, planning the project, and locating appropriate sources. this section is brought up to date with new information on the role of the internet in research, including how to find and evaluate sources, avoid their misuse, and test their reliability. part 3 explains the art of making an argument and supporting it. the authors have extensively revised this section to present the structure of an argument in clearer and more accessible terms than in the first edition. new distinctions are made among reasons, evidence, and reports of evidence. the concepts of qualifications and rebuttals are recast as acknowledgment and response. part 4 covers drafting and revising, and offers new information on the visual representation of data. part 5 concludes the book with an updated discussion of the ethics of research, as well as an expanded bibliography that includes many electronic sources. the new edition retains the accessibility, insights, and directness that have made the craft of research an indispensable guide for anyone doing research, from students in high school through advanced graduate study to businesspeople and government employees. the authors demonstrate convincingly that researching and reporting skills can be learned and used by all who undertake research projects. new to this edition: extensive coverage of how to do research on the internet, including how to evaluate and test the reliability of sources new information on the visual representation of data expanded bibliography with many electronic sources

Description : Read Now Stand Up Comedy In Theory Or Abjection In America by John Limon and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. stand-up comedy in theory, or, abjection in america is the first study of stand-up comedy as a form of art. john limon appreciates and analyzes the specific practice of stand-up itself, moving beyond theories of the joke, of the comic, and of comedy in general to read stand-up through the lens of literary and cultural theory. limon argues that stand-up is an artform best defined by its fascination with the abject, julia kristeva’s term for those aspects of oneself that are obnoxious to one’s sense of identity but that are nevertheless—like blood, feces, or urine—impossible to jettison once and for all. all of a comedian’s life, limon asserts, is abject in this sense. limon begins with stand-up comics in the 1950s and 1960s—lenny bruce, carl reiner, mel brooks, mike nichols, elaine may—when the norm of the profession was the jewish, male, heterosexual comedian. he then moves toward the present with analyses of david letterman, richard pryor, ellen degeneres, and paula poundstone. limon incorporates feminist, race, and queer theories to argue that the “comedification” of america—stand-up comedy’s escape from its narrow origins—involves the repossession by black, female, queer, and protestant comedians of what was black, female, queer, yet suburbanizing in jewish, male, heterosexual comedy. limon’s formal definition of stand-up as abject art thus hinges on his claim that the great american comedians of the 1950s and 1960s located their comedy at the place (which would have been conceived in 1960 as a location between new york city or chicago and their suburbs) where body is thrown off for the mind and materiality is thrown off for abstraction—at the place, that is, where american abjection has always found its home. as the first study of its kind, stand-up comedy in theory, or, abjection in america will appeal to a wide audience including those interested in cultural studies, jewish studies, gender and queer theory.

Description : Read Now Seven Against Thebes by Aeschylus and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the formidable talents of anthony hecht, one of the most gifted of contemporary american poets, and helen bacon, a classical scholar, are here brought to bear on this vibrant translation of aeschylus' much underrated tragedy the seven against thebes. the third and only remaining play in a trilogy dealing with related events, the seven against thebes tells the story of the argive attempt to claim the kingdom of thebes, and of the deaths of the brothers eteocles and polyneices, each by the others hand. long dismissed by critics as ritualistic and lacking in dramatic tension, seven against thebes is revealed by hecht and bacon as a work of great unity and drama, one exceptionally rich in symbolism and imagery.

Description : Read Now Place Names Of Hawaii by Mary Kawena Pukui and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. how many place names are there in the hawaiian islands? even a rough estimate is impossible. hawaiians named taro patches, rocks, trees, canoe landings, resting places in the forests, and the tiniest spots where miraculous events are believed to have taken place. and place names are far from static--names are constantly being given to new houses and buildings, streets and towns, and old names are replaced by new ones. it is essential, then, to record the names and the lore associated with them now, while hawaiians are here to lend us their knowledge. and, whatever the fate of the hawaiian language, the place names will endure. the first edition of place names of hawaii contained only 1,125 entries. the coverage is expanded in the present edition to include about 4,000 entries, including names in english. also, approximately 800 more names are included in this volume than appear in the second edition of the atlas of hawaii.

Description : Read Now Research In The Archival Multiverse by Sue McKemmish and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. within the past 15 years, the field of archival studies around the world has experienced unprecedented growth and archival studies graduate education programs today have among the highest enrollments in any information field. during the same period, there has also been unparalleled expansion and innovation in the diversity of methods and theories being applied in archival scholarship. global in scope, research in the archival multiverse compiles critical and reflective essays across a wide range of emerging research areas and interests in archival studies with the aim of providing current and future archival academics with a text addressing possible methods and theoretical frameworks that have been and might be used in archival scholarship. more than a collation of research methods for handy reference, this volume advocates for reflexive research practice as a means by which to lay bare the fuzziness and messiness of research. whereas research in the form of published research papers and juried conference presentations provide a view of the study framed in terms of research questions and findings, reflexive research practice reveals the context of the study and chains of situations, choices, and decisions that influence the trajectories of the studies themselves. such elucidations from the position of the researcher are instructive for others, who may be inspired to apply or adapt the method for their own research.
