Description : Read Now Human Evolutionary Psychology by Louise Barrett and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. why do people resort to plastic surgery to look young? why are stepchildren at greatest risk of fatal abuse? why do we prefer gossip to algebra? why must dogon wives live alone in a dark hut for five days a month? why are young children good at learning language but not sharing? over the past decade, psychologists and behavioral ecologists have been finding answers to such seemingly unrelated questions by applying an evolutionary perspective to the study of human behavior and psychology. human evolutionary psychology is a comprehensive, balanced, and readable introduction to this burgeoning field. it combines a sophisticated understanding of the basics of evolutionary theory with a solid grasp of empirical case studies. covering not only such traditional subjects as kin selection and mate choice, this text also examines more complex understandings of marriage practices and inheritance rules and the way in which individual action influences the structure of societies and aspects of cultural evolution. it critically assesses the value of evolutionary explanations to humans in both modern western society and traditional preindustrial societies. and it fairly presents debates within the field, identifying areas of compatibility among sometimes competing approaches. combining a broad scope with the more in-depth knowledge and sophisticated understanding needed to approach the primary literature, this text is the ideal introduction to the exciting and rapidly expanding study of human evolutionary psychology.

Description : Read Now Adapting Minds by David J. Buller and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. was human nature designed by natural selection in the pleistocene epoch? the dominant view in evolutionary psychology holds that it was—that our psychological adaptations were designed tens of thousands of years ago to solve problems faced by our hunter-gatherer ancestors. in this provocative and lively book, david buller examines in detail the major claims of evolutionary psychology—the paradigm popularized by steven pinker in the blank slate and by david buss in the evolution of desire—and rejects them all. this does not mean that we cannot apply evolutionary theory to human psychology, says buller, but that the conventional wisdom in evolutionary psychology is misguided. evolutionary psychology employs a kind of reverse engineering to explain the evolved design of the mind, figuring out the adaptive problems our ancestors faced and then inferring the psychological adaptations that evolved to solve them. in the carefully argued central chapters of adapting minds, buller scrutinizes several of evolutionary psychology's most highly publicized "discoveries," including "discriminative parental solicitude" (the idea that stepparents abuse their stepchildren at a higher rate than genetic parents abuse their biological children). drawing on a wide range of empirical research, including his own large-scale study of child abuse, he shows that none is actually supported by the evidence. buller argues that our minds are not adapted to the pleistocene, but, like the immune system, are continually adapting, over both evolutionary time and individual lifetimes. we must move beyond the reigning orthodoxy of evolutionary psychology to reach an accurate understanding of how human psychology is influenced by evolution. when we do, buller claims, we will abandon not only the quest for human nature but the very idea of human nature itself.

Description : Read Now Evolutionary Psychology As Maladapted Psychology by Richardson and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. human beings, like other organisms, are the products of evolution. like other organisms, we exhibit traits that are the product of natural selection. our psychological capacities are evolved traits as much as are our gait and posture. this much few would dispute. evolutionary psychology goes further than this, claiming that our psychological traits -- including a wide variety of traits, from mate preference and jealousy to language and reason -- can be understood as specific adaptations to ancestral pleistocene conditions. in evolutionary psychology as maladapted psychology, robert richardson takes a critical look at evolutionary psychology by subjecting its ambitious and controversial claims to the same sorts of methodological and evidential constraints that are broadly accepted within evolutionary biology.the claims of evolutionary psychology may pass muster as psychology; but what are their evolutionary credentials? richardson considers three ways adaptive hypotheses can be evaluated, using examples from the biological literature to illustrate what sorts of evidence and methodology would be necessary to establish specific evolutionary and adaptive explanations of human psychological traits. he shows that existing explanations within evolutionary psychology fall woefully short of accepted biological standards. the theories offered by evolutionary psychologists may identify traits that are, or were, beneficial to humans. but gauged by biological standards, there is inadequate evidence: evolutionary psychologists are largely silent on the evolutionary evidence relevant to assessing their claims, including such matters as variation in ancestral populations, heritability, and the advantage offered to our ancestors. as evolutionary claims they are unsubstantiated. evolutionary psychology, richardson concludes, may offer a program of research, but it lacks the kind of evidence that is generally expected within evolutionary biology. it is speculation rather than sound science -- and we should treat its claims with skepticism.

Description : Read Now How To Be An Excellent Human Mysticism Evolutionary Psychology And The Good Life by Bill Meacham and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. how can we live good, fulfilling lives? how can we be happy? these questions have been at the forefront of philosophy ever since socrates, and this engaging book attempts an answer. it addresses the big questions of life: how should we live our lives? how should we decide how to live our lives? how should we even frame the question in the first place? what is it to be human? what are we like, how do we function? what is our place in universe? how do we fit into the bigger picture? what is the bigger picture, the basic nature of all of reality? the book is exciting and wide-ranging. it is incisive philosophy made accessible to the general reader. the author is equally at home lucidly explaining how mystics make sense when they say that all is one and how evolution has provided us with powerful but fallible mental capacities. the book offers an exhilarating journey with stops along the way to consider consciousness, panpsychism, brain science, quantum physics, how we are like and unlike chimpanzees and bonobos, where morality comes from, how our emotions both guide us and trip us up, how our thinking works, how it sometimes fails and what we can do to fix it. throughout, it recommends an approach to life that maximizes well-being, leading to the possibility of happiness and abundance for all. the book covers a lot of ground, but it is quite approachable. you can read it straight through as an intellectually exciting story. or you can dive in anywhere, dipping into chapters that pique your interest. in either case you will have fun reading it, and you will be rewarded with insights and ideas that will stimulate and delight your thinking.
