Description : Read Now Nanoethics by Donal P. O'Mathuna and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. nanotechnology manipulates matter at the atomic level. it leads to innovative processes and products that are revolutionizing many areas of modern life. huge amounts of public funds are being invested in the science, yet the public has little understanding of the technology or its ethical implications. indeed, the ethical, social, and political dimensions of nanotechnology are only beginning to receive the attention they require - outside of science fiction contexts. surveillance devices may become so small that they are practically invisible to the naked eye, raising concerns about privacy. nanomedicine may lead to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic devices, yet anxieties have been raised about the impact of "nanobots" circulating in our bodies. military applications, or misuses, of nanotechnology raise other concerns. this book explores in an accessible and informative way how nanotechnology is likely to impact the lives of ordinary people in the coming years and why ethical reflection on nanotechnology is needed now.

Description : Read Now New Global Frontiers In Regulation by Graeme A. Hodge and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this is an insightful collection by leading thinkers in both regulation and nanotechnology. it confronts new technological challenges with fresh regulatory insight. john braithwaite, australian national university our growing ability to manufacture materials at the atomic scale will change our lives for the better, and tomorrow s nano-economy will outperform today s information age. or so its proponents claim. others maintain that a future dominated by commercial incentives risks a toxicological nightmare to rival the sorry global story of asbestos. this important volume is a timely contribution to increasing international calls to regulate nanotechnologies. by investigating the ways in which we could regulate these advances, and what we are learning from regulating existing technologies, such as biotechnologies and information technologies, the book debates the roles of government, business actors and the professions in protecting and enhancing the lives of citizens. in placing particular emphasis on the lessons of earlier technology advances, this book is unique in its broad consideration of the ethical, legal and social issues entwined within the development of the nanotechnology family. the multi-jurisdictional and interdisciplinary nature of the book will appeal to governments, academics, and civil societies across many parts of the world, while also remaining accessible to informed readers with an interest in nanotechnology and the policy and governance issues associated with technology development and regulation.

Description : Read Now From Empirics To Ethics by Marciana Agnes Guanio Ponsaran and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. touted as the "next revolution" and "second renaissance", nanotechnology has raised great expectations from people across the globe and has become the centerpiece of the political and economic agenda of the first world and developing countries. while it has raised hopes for a better and brighter future, it has likewise stirred a lot of controversies. the role of ethics in technology developemnt cannot be underestimated. it lies at the core of man's activity in pursuit of his chosen ends. the study introduces nanotechnology and nanomedicine as a fertile ground for ethical evaluation. three alternative routes were chosen-first, by looking into the contemporary debates in nanoethics; second by drawing from aristotle's ethical treatises, and; third by invoking the precautionary principles as articulated by hans jonas and the world commission on scientific knowledge and technology. the study shows that nanotechnology has far-reaching societal and ethical implications and the potential of reshaping all facets of human life. nanoethics enlarges the scope of ethical inquiry and disentangles the complex ethical issues arising from the application of nanotechnology. aristotle's ethics holds a promise of shaping an ethical landscape for nanotechnology by drawing attention to moral virtues in relation to human flourishing (eudaimonia). the precautionary principle guides our decisions in the face of risks and uncertainties posed by emerging technologies.

Description : Read Now The Visioneers by W. Patrick McCray and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the story of the visionary scientists who invented the future in 1969, princeton physicist gerard o'neill began looking outward to space colonies as the new frontier for humanity's expansion. a decade later, eric drexler, an mit-trained engineer, turned his attention to the molecular world as the place where society's future needs could be met using self-replicating nanoscale machines. these modern utopians predicted that their technologies could transform society as humans mastered the ability to create new worlds, undertook atomic-scale engineering, and, if truly successful, overcame their own biological limits. the visioneers tells the story of how these scientists and the communities they fostered imagined, designed, and popularized speculative technologies such as space colonies and nanotechnologies. patrick mccray traces how these visioneers blended countercultural ideals with hard science, entrepreneurship, libertarianism, and unbridled optimism about the future. he shows how they built networks that communicated their ideas to writers, politicians, and corporate leaders. but the visioneers were not immune to failure—or to the lures of profit, celebrity, and hype. o'neill and drexler faced difficulty funding their work and overcoming colleagues' skepticism, and saw their ideas co-opted and transformed by timothy leary, the scriptwriters of star trek, and many others. ultimately, both men struggled to overcome stigma and ostracism as they tried to unshackle their visioneering from pejorative labels like "fringe" and "pseudoscience.? the visioneers provides a balanced look at the successes and pitfalls they encountered. the book exposes the dangers of promotion—oversimplification, misuse, and misunderstanding—that can plague exploratory science. but above all, it highlights the importance of radical new ideas that inspire us to support cutting-edge research into tomorrow's technologies.

Description : Read Now Animal De Liberation by Jan Deckers and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in this book, jan deckers addresses the most crucial question that people must deliberate in relation to how we should treat other animals: whether we should eat animal products. many people object to the consumption of animal products from the conviction that it inflicts pain, suffering, and death upon animals. this book argues that a convincing ethical theory cannot be based on these important concerns: rather, it must focus on our interest in human health. tending to this interest demands not only that we extend speciesism—the attribution of special significance to members of our own species merely because they belong to the same species as ourself—towards nonhuman animals, but also that we safeguard the integrity of nature. in this light, projects that aim to engineer the genetic material of animals to reduce their capacities to feel pain and to suffer are morally suspect. the same applies to projects that aim to develop in-vitro flesh, even if the production of such flesh should be welcomed on other grounds. the theory proposed in this book is accompanied by a political goal, the ‘vegan project’, which strives for a qualified ban on the consumption of animal products. deckers also provides empirical evidence that some support for this goal exists already, and his analysis of the views of others—including those of slaughterhouse workers—reveals that the vegan project stands firm in spite of public opposition. many charges have been pressed against vegan diets, including: that they alienate human beings from nature; that they increase human food security concerns; and that they are unsustainable. deckers argues that these charges are legitimate in some cases, but that, in many situations, vegan diets are actually superior. for those who remain doubtful, the book also contains an appendix that considers whether vegan diets might actually be nutritionally adequate.
