Description : Read Now France In Indochina by Nicola Cooper and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. valorised as 'la perle de l'extrÍme orient', indochina was france's rival to britain's 'jewel in the crown'. advanced, worthy, and accorded special status, it was a showcase of success, but also a site of disaster. given the current scholarly interest in reassessing colonial attitudes and in francophone culture, this book fills an important gap by focusing upon the neglected french colonial discourses at the height of the french imperial encounter with indochina. the period of french colonial rule in indochina spanned some ninety years and not only did it witness france's fourth republic's first experience (and loss) of colonial war, it also exemplified the often contradictory representations and perceptions of imperial identity, colonialism and the legacy of the 1789 revolution. framed by political, ideological and historical developments and debates, each chapter develops an intriguing socio-cultural account of france's own understanding of its role in indochina and its relationship with the colony. the author brings together striking images from colonial expositions, metropolitan fiction, travel journalism, world exhibitions, popular song, gendered and familial representations as well as film to reveal the confusion over imperial identity that prevailed in france until the eve of the second world war. this authoritative work provides an important re-evaluation of french indochina and its legacy. its interdisciplinary approach will be of interest to a broad readership: students of french history, colonial and postcolonial studies, cultural studies, literature, sociology and race.

Description : Read Now U S Containment Policy And The Conflict In Indochina by William Duiker and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. from the end of world war ii down to the dissolution of the soviet union, the primary objective of u.s. foreign policy has been to prevent the expansion of communism. indeed, that objective was directly embodied in the so-called strategy of containment, a global approach to the pursuit of u.s. national security interests that was first adumbrated by george f. kennan in 1947 and later became the guiding force in u.s. foreign policy. at first, the concept of containment was applied primarily to europe. it was there that the threat to u.s. interests from international communism directed from moscow was first perceived, in the form of soviet efforts to dominate the nations of eastern europe and extend soviet influence into the eastern mediterranean and the middle east. other areas of the world—asia, africa, and latin america—were considered to be less threatened by forces hostile to the free world or more peripheral to u.s. foreign policy concerns. at least that was the view initially proclaimed by george kennan himself, who identified five areas in the world as vital to the united states: north america, great britain, central europe, the ussr, and japan. only the latter was located in asia. by the end of the decade, however, the focus of u.s. containment strategy was extended to include east and southeast asia, primarily because of the increasing likelihood of a communist victory in the chinese civil war, which, in the minds of some u.s. policymakers, would be tantamount to giving the soviet union a dominant position on the asian mainland. added to the growing threat in china was the increasingly unstable situation in southeast asia, where the long arc of colonies that had been established by the imperialist powers during the last half of the nineteenth century was gradually but inexorably being replaced by independent states. the emergence of such colonial territories into independence was generally viewed as a welcome prospect by foreign policy observers in washington, but when combined with the impending victory of communist forces in china it raised the unsettling possibility that the entire region might be brought within the reach of the kremlin.

Description : Read Now Imperial Heights by Eric T. Jennings and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. intended as a reminder of europe for soldiers and clerks of the empire, the city of dalat, located in the hills of southern vietnam, was built by the french in an alpine locale that reminded them of home. this book uncovers the strange 100-year history of a colonial city that was conceived as a center of power and has now become a kitsch tourist destination famed for its colonial villas, flower beds, pristine lakes, and pastoral landscapes. eric t. jennings finds that from its very beginning, dalat embodied the paradoxes of colonialism—it was a city of leisure built on the backs of thousands of coolies, a supposed paragon of hygiene that offered only questionable protection from disease, and a new venture into ethnic relations that ultimately backfired. jennings’ fascinating history opens a new window onto virtually all aspects of french indochina, from architecture and urban planning to violence, labor, métissage, health and medicine, gender and ethic relations, schooling, religion, comportments, anxieties, and more.
