López and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in the mid-nineteenth century, cuba's infamous "coolie" trade brought well over 100,000 chinese indentured laborers to its shores. though subjected to abominable conditions, they were followed during subsequent decades by smaller numbers of merchants, craftsmen, and free migrants searching for better lives far from home. in a comprehensive, vibrant history that draws deeply on chinese- and spanish-language sources in both china and cuba, kathleen lopez explores the transition of the chinese from indentured to free migrants, the formation of transnational communities, and the eventual incorporation of the chinese into the cuban citizenry during the first half of the twentieth century. chinese cubans shows how chinese migration, intermarriage, and assimilation are central to cuban history and national identity during a key period of transition from slave to wage labor and from colony to nation. on a broader level, lopez draws out implications for issues of race, national identity, and transnational migration, especially along the pacific rim.

Description : Read Now Chinese Mexicans by Julia María Schiavone Camacho and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. at the turn of the twentieth century, a wave of chinese men made their way to the northern mexican border state of sonora to work and live. the ties--and families--these mexicans and chinese created led to the formation of a new cultural identity: chinese mexican. during the tumult of the mexican revolution of 1910, however, anti-chinese sentiment ultimately led to mass expulsion of these people. julia maria schiavone camacho follows the community through the mid-twentieth century, across borders and oceans, to show how they fought for their place as mexicans, both in mexico and abroad. tracing transnational geography, schiavone camacho explores how these men and women developed a strong sense of mexican national identity while living abroad--in the united states, briefly, and then in southeast asia where they created a hybrid community and taught their children about the mexican homeland. schiavone camacho also addresses how mexican women challenged their legal status after being stripped of mexican citizenship because they married chinese men. after repatriation in the 1930s-1960s, chinese mexican men and women, who had left mexico with strong regional identities, now claimed national cultural belonging and mexican identity in ways they had not before.

Description : Read Now Nativism Overseas by Hsin-sheng C. Kao and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book examines five of the most influential chinese-born women writers of the post-war era: nie hualing, yu lihua, chen ruoxi, li li, and zhong xiaoyang. they have become a dominating force in chinese literature today, although they presently reside outside their homeland. this book raises a clear and consistent voice in line with the literature of exile and self discovery. as these writers talk of the ‘root’—the self, and their social, cultural, and historical identities— their varied voices share the unique characteristics of the literature of exile. these women, who continue to write in their native language, envision themselves as the literary mediators between their lost past and their newly adopted homeland. they compare each of these worlds in terms of the demons with which they have wrestled for identity, recognition, and freedom. the book is of interest not only to those with a particular interest in the phenomenon of these chinese exiled intellectual émigrés and their role in the influence on the development of chinese literature, but to those who seek to understand the development of women's studies and world literature as a whole, and the influence of east-west literary relations in particular.

Description : Read Now China And International Relations by Zheng Yongnian and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. despite beijing’s repeated assurance that china’s rise will be "peaceful", the united states, japan and the european union as well as many of china's asian neighbours feel uneasy about the rise of china. although china’s rise could be seen as inevitable, it remains uncertain as to how a politically and economically powerful china will behave, and how it will conduct its relations with the outside world. one major problem with understanding china’s international relations is that western concepts of international relations only partially explain china’s approach. china’s own flourishing, indigeneous community of international relations scholars have borrowed many concepts from the west, but their application has not been entirely successful, so the work of conceptualizing and theorizing china’s approach to international relations remains incomplete. written by some of the foremost scholars in the field of china studies, this book focuses on the work of wang gungwu - one of the most influential scholars writing on international relations - including topics such as empire, nation-state, nationalism, state ideology, and the chinese view of world order. besides honouring wang gungwu as a great scholar, the book explores how china can be integrated more fully into international relations studies and theories; discusses the extent to which existing ir theory succeeds or fails to explain chinese ir behaviour, and demonstrates how the study of chinese experiences can enrich the ir field.
