Description : Read Now Homo Ludens As A Comic Character In Selected American Films by Artur Skweres and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book reveals the hitherto critically disregarded ludic elements in popular american comedy films, building on and expanding the theories developed by johan huizinga in his classic study homo ludens (1938) and roger caillois in les jeux et les hommes (1958). to address the lack of attention paid to the play principle in film comedy studies, this book focuses exclusively on the elements typical of play that can be found in movies. it introduces two new categories describing play: óneiros and pragma, which allow analysis of how play in comedies is influenced by the relations between the player and non-players. the text is supplemented by the use of the author’s drawings, which, because of their analytical and selective nature, are used as a tool for visual study. the play principle has a long tradition in american humor and the films examined here were chosen for their popularity and wide appeal, often acting as vehicles for hollywood stars (e.g. chevy chase, dan aykroyd, bill murray, steve martin, eddie murphy, goldie hawn, mike myers, jackie chan or chris tucker). the actors’ status allowed the filmmakers to construct situations in which the protagonists distanced themselves from the fictional situation. it is argued that the playful detachment from reality, typifying many of the fictional characters portrayed by actors with star status, is characteristic of the play principle in film. another major consideration is the hotly debated notion of the accomplishment of goals in playful activities, and the book strongly supports the position that in narratives, play can (but does not have to) yield important results. the introduction of the categories of óneiros and pragma in play serves to highlight the complex relation between playfulness and practicality in the films discussed. building on a comprehensive analysis of the ludic elements in selected popular american comedies, the book makes an important contribution to film studies, providing a unique perspective through its focus on the concept of homo ludens as a comic hero.

Description : Read Now From Mae To Madonna by June Sochen and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. entertainers were the first group of successful women to capture the public eye, taking to the stage in vaudeville and film and redefining their place in society. june sochen introduces the white, african american, and latina women who danced on broadway, fell on bananas in silent films, and wisecracked in smoky clubs, as well as the modern icons of today's movies and popular music. sochen considers such women as mae west, bette davis, shirley temple, lucille ball, and mary tyler moore to discover what show business did for them and what they did for the world of entertainment. she uses the life of 30s and 40s latina star lupe velez as a case study of the roles available to latinas in popular culture. she then contrasts her story with that of the african american action star pam grier to demonstrate the old and new ways minority women are portrayed in popular culture. from mae to madonna places each woman within the context of her time and talks about her relationship with dominant female stereotypes. sochen discusses women's roles as mary, eve, and lilith and asks thought-provoking questions. why did the depression give women movie stars so many important roles while the so-called feminist 1970s did not? why has television been a congenial venue for women comics while film has not? in examining how entertainers worked within or transformed particular genres and how their personal and public lives affected their careers, from mae to madonna casts the spotlight on a series of remarkable women and their dramatic effect on america's popular culture.

Description : Read Now The Latino Migration Experience In North Carolina by Hannah Gill and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. over recent decades, the southeast has become a new frontier for latin american migration to and within the united states, and north carolina has had one of the fastest growing latino populations in the nation. here, hannah gill offers north carolinians from all walks of life a better understanding of their latino neighbors, bringing light instead of heat to local and national debates on immigration. exploring the larger social forces behind demographic shifts, gill shows both how north carolina communities are facing the challenges and opportunities presented by these changes and how migrants experience the economic and social realities of their new lives. latinos are no longer just visitors to the state but are part of the inevitably changing, long-term makeup of its population. today, emerging migrant communities and the integration of latino populations remain salient issues as the u.s. congress stands on the verge of formulating comprehensive immigration reform for the first time in nearly three decades. gill makes connections between hometowns and the increasing globalization of people, money, technology, and culture by shedding light on the many diverse north carolina residents who are highly visible yet, as she shows, invisible at the same time.

Description : Read Now Next Of Kin by Richard T. Rodríguez and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. as both an idea and an institution, the family has been at the heart of chicano/a cultural politics since the mexican american civil rights movement emerged in the late 1960s. in next of kin, richard t. rodríguez explores the competing notions of la familia found in movement-inspired literature, film, video, music, painting, and other forms of cultural expression created by chicano men. drawing on cultural studies and feminist and queer theory, he examines representations of the family that reflect and support a patriarchal, heteronormative nationalism as well as those that reconfigure kinship to encompass alternative forms of belonging. describing how la familia came to be adopted as an organizing strategy for communitarian politics, rodríguez looks at foundational texts including rodolfo gonzales’s well-known poem “i am joaquín,” the chicano liberation youth conference’s manifesto el plan espiritual de aztlán, and josé armas’s la familia de la raza. rodríguez analyzes representations of the family in the films i am joaquín, yo soy chicano, and chicana; the los angeles public affairs television series ¡ahora!; the experimental videos of the artist-activist harry gamboa jr.; and the work of hip-hop artists such as kid frost and chicano brotherhood. he reflects on homophobia in chicano nationalist thought, and examines how chicano gay men have responded to it in works including al lujan’s video s&m in the hood, the paintings of eugene rodríguez, and a poem by the late activist rodrigo reyes. next of kin is both a wide-ranging assessment of la familia’s symbolic power and a hopeful call for a more inclusive cultural politics.
