Description : Read Now Making Medical Decisions For The Profoundly Mentally Disabled by Norman L. Cantor and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. a legal and moral analysis of medical decision making on behalf of those with such severe cognitive impairments that they cannot exercise self-determination. in this book, norman cantor analyzes the legal and moral status of people with profound mental disabilities—those with extreme cognitive impairments that prevent their exercise of medical self-determination. he proposes a legal and moral framework for surrogate medical decision making on their behalf. the issues cantor explores will be of interest to professionals in law, medicine, psychology, philosophy, and ethics, as well as to parents, guardians, and health care providers who face perplexing issues in the context of surrogate medical decision making. the profoundly mentally disabled are thought by some moral philosophers to lack the minimum cognitive ability for personhood. countering this position, cantor advances both theoretical and practical arguments for according them full legal and moral status. he also argues that the concept of intrinsic human dignity should have an integral role in shaping the bounds of surrogate decision making. thus, he claims, while profoundly mentally disabled persons are not entitled to make their own medical decisions, respect for intrinsic human dignity dictates their right to have a conscientious surrogate make medical decisions on their behalf. cantor discusses the criteria that bind such surrogates. he asserts, contrary to popular wisdom, that the best interests of the disabled person are not always the determinative standard: the interests of family or others can sometimes be considered. surrogates may even, consistent with the intrinsic human dignity standard, sometimes authorize tissue donation or participation in nontherapeutic medical research by profoundly disabled persons. intrinsic human dignity limits the occasions for such decisions and dictates close attention to the preferences and feelings of the profoundly disabled persons themselves. cantor also analyzes the underlying philosophical rationale that makes these decision-making criteria consistent with law and morals.

Description : Read Now Medical Decision Making by Alan Schwartz, George Bergus and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. decision making is a key activity, perhaps the most important activity, in the practice of healthcare. although physicians acquire a great deal of knowledge and specialised skills during their training and through their practice, it is in the exercise of clinical judgement and its application to individual patients that the outstanding physician is distinguished. this has become even more relevant as patients become increasingly welcomed as partners in a shared decision making process. this book translates the research and theory from the science of decision making into clinically useful tools and principles that can be applied by clinicians in the field. it considers issues of patient goals, uncertainty, judgement, choice, development of new information, and family and social concerns in healthcare. it helps to demystify decision theory by emphasizing concepts and clinical cases over mathematics and computation.

Description : Read Now Making Medical Spending Decisions by Mark A. Hall and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. a fresh and comprehensive exploration of how health care rationing decisions are made, this book offers not specific criteria for rationing--like age or quality of life--but a comparative analysis of three alternative decision makers: consumers paying out of pocket, government and insurance officials setting limits on treatments and coverage, and physicians making decisions at the bedside. hall's analysis reveals that none of these alternatives is uniformly superior, and, therefore, a mix of all three is inevitable. the author develops his analysis along three lines of reasoning: political economics, ethics, and law. the economic dimension addresses the practical feasibility of each method for making spending decisions. the ethical dimension discusses several theories--principally classic liberalism, social contract theory, and communitarianism--as well as concepts like autonomy and coercion. the legal dimension follows recent developments in legal doctrine such as informed consent, insurance coverage disputes, and the emerging direction of federal regulation. hall concludes that physician rationing at the bedside is far more promising than medical ethicists and the medical profession have traditionally allowed.

Ubel and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. we've all been there, sitting uncomfortably in a paper gown as a doctor impassively describes our prognosis. sometimes it's simple and treatable. other times we get news we can't fathom and then are faced with decisions that are literally life and death. in this revolutionary book, physician, behavioral scientist, and bioethicist peter ubel, m.d., reveals how hidden dynamics in the doctor/patient relationship keep us and our loved ones from making the best medical choices. from doctors who struggle to explain, to patients who fail to properly listen, countless factors alter the course of our care, causing things to go seriously awry. with riveting stories of ubel's own experience in the field, his groundbreaking research, and his personal journey walking loved ones through difficult treatment choices, critical decisions will forever change the way we communicate inside hospitals and medical offices, where thoughtful decision making matters the most. dr. ubel has been on both ends of the stethoscope, and in this book, he shows how patients and doctors can learn to become partners and work together to make the right choices. from choosing to get surgery, to discussing the side effects of a blood pressure medication, we can finally discover the tools to improve communication, understand the issues, and make confident decisions for our future health and happiness.

Description : Read Now Making Decisions That Matter by Kathleen M. Galotti and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. researchers studying decision making have traditionally studied the phenomenon in the laboratory, with hypothetical decisions that may or may not involve the decision maker's values, passions, or areas of expertise. the assumption is that the findings of these well-controlled laboratory studies will shed light on the important decisions people make in their everyday lives. this book examines that assumption. the volume begins by covering four basic phases of decision making: setting or clarifying goals, gathering information, structuring the decision, and making a final choice. comprehensive reviews of existing literature on each of these topics is provided. next, the author examines differences in decision making as a function of several factors not typically discussed in the literature: the type of decision being made (e.g., legal, medical, moral) and the existence of individual differences in the decision maker (developmental differences, individual differences in style or temperament, differences as a function of expertise). the author then examines the topic of group decision making, contrasting it with individual decision making. the volume concludes with some observations and suggestions for improving peoples' everyday decision making. this book is intended for use as a core textbook or supplement for courses in psychology, education, or allied disciplines. it will also be an invaluable resource for people who work with people making decisions in various applied settings, such as schools, universities, and health care centers.

Description : Read Now Making Decisions And Avoiding Complications In Skin Flaps by David H. Friedman, Payam Saadat and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. with a large number of clinical photographs, making decisions and avoiding complications in skin flaps is an atlas intended for the surgeon who already has a grasp of the fundamentals and mechanics of flap repair, but may need additional ideas on selecting an appropriate flap for a given defect. divided into three sections, the book begins with a section on repairs organized by location on the body. rather than an exhaustive list of all flaps ever used, the book focuses on the ones the authors have successfully used on a routine basis. the second section contains repairs organized by flap type and the third section contains clinical photographs of suboptimal results with a discussion of what may have gone wrong and what could have been done differently to obtain a better result. the intent of this text is not to showcase results but to present flap options for different defects and anatomic sites. each example includes a photograph showing the defect and a second showing the repair. when available and/or of educational value, illustrations of the flap or long-term follow-up photos are supplied. throughout the text, surgical pearls are presented in bold text which can help optimize a particular flap’s success rate and/or aesthetic outcome. these pearls have also been compiled into an addendum at the end of the book.
