Wentzell and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. maturing masculinities is a nuanced exploration of how older men in urban mexico incorporate aging, chronic illness, changing social relationships, and decreasing erectile function into their conceptions of themselves as men. it is based on interviews that emily a. wentzell conducted with more than 250 male patients in the urology clinic of a government-run hospital in cuernavaca. drawing on science studies, medical anthropology, and gender theory, wentzell suggests the idea of "composite masculinities" as a paradigm for understanding how men incorporate physical and social change into gendered selfhoods. erectile dysfunction treatments like viagra are popular in mexico, where stereotypes of men as sex-obsessed "machos" persist. however, most of the men wentzell interviewed saw erectile difficulty as a chance to demonstrate difference from this stereotype. rather than using drugs to continue youthful sex lives, many collaborated with wives and physicians to frame erectile difficulty as a prompt to embody age-appropriate, mature masculinities.

Description : Read Now Youth Gangs And Street Children by Paula Heinonen and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the rapidly expanding population of youth gangs and street children is one of the most disturbing issues in many cities around the world. these children are perceived to be in a constant state of destitution, violence and vagrancy, and therefore must be a serious threat to society, needing heavy-handed intervention and 'tough love' from concerned adults to impose societal norms on them and turn them into responsible citizens. however, such norms are far from the lived reality of these children. the situation is further complicated by gender-based violence and masculinist ideologies found in the wider ethiopian culture, which influence the proliferation of youth gangs. by focusing on gender as the defining element of these children's lives - as they describe it in their own words - this book offers a clear analysis of how the unequal and antagonistic gender relations that are tolerated and normalized by everyday school and family structures shape their lives at home and on the street.

Description : Read Now Heterosexual Masculinities by Bruce Reis and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in recent years there have been substantial changes in approaches to how genders are made and what functions genders fulfill. most of the scholarly focus in this area has been in the areas of feminist, gay, and lesbian studies, and heterosexual masculinity - which tended to be defined by lack and absence - has not received the critical and scholarly attention these other areas have received. heterosexual masculinities rethinks a psychoanalytic tradition that has long thought of masculinity as a sort of brittle defense against femininity, softness, and emotionality. reflecting current trends in psychoanalytic thinking, this book seeks to understand heterosexual masculinity as fluid, multiple, and emergent. the contributors to this insightful volume take new perspectives on relations between men, men’s positions as fathers in relation to their sons and daughters, the clinical encounter with heterosexual men, the social contexts of masculinity, and the multiplicity of heterosexual masculine subjectivities. what to a previous generation would have appeared as pathological or defensive, we now encounter as forms of masculine subjectivity that include wishes for intimacy, receptivity, and surrender, alongside ambition and the pleasures of "phallic narcissism."

Description : Read Now Masculinities by Eduardo P. Archetti and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the complex relationship between nationalism and masculinity has been explored both historically and sociologically with one consistent conclusion: male concepts of courage and virility are at the core of nationalism. in this ground-breaking book, the author questions this assumption and advances the debate through an empirical analysis of masculinity in the revealing contexts of same-sex (football and polo) and cross-sex (tango) relations. because of its rich history, argentina provides the ideal setting in which to study the intersection of masculine and national constructs: hybridization, creolization and a culture of performance have all informed both gender and national identities. further, the author argues that, counter to claims made by globalization theorists, the importance of performance to argentinian men and women has a long history and has powerfully shaped the national psyche. but this book takes the analysis far beyond national boundaries to address general arguments in anthropology which are not culture-specific, and the discussion poses important comparative questions and addresses central theoretical issues, from the interplay of morality and ritual, to a comparison between the popular and the aristocratic, to the importance of 'othering' in national constructions - particularly those relating to sport. this book represents a major contribution, not only to anthropology, but to the study of gender, nationalism and culture in its broadest sense.

Description : Read Now Caribbean Pleasure Industry by Mark Padilla and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in recent years, the economy of the caribbean has become almost completely dependent on international tourism. and today one of the chief ways that foreign visitors there seek pleasure is through prostitution. while much has been written on the female sex workers who service these tourists, caribbean pleasure industry shifts the focus onto the men. drawing on his groundbreaking ethnographic research in the dominican republic, mark padilla discovers a complex world where the global political and economic impact of tourism has led to shifting sexual identities, growing economic pressures, and new challenges for hiv prevention. in fluid prose, padilla analyzes men who have sex with male tourists, yet identify themselves as “normal” heterosexual men and struggle to maintain this status within their relationships with wives and girlfriends. padilla’s exceptional ability to describe the experiences of these men will interest anthropologists, but his examination of bisexuality and tourism as much-neglected factors in the hiv/aids epidemic makes this book essential to anyone concerned with health and sexuality in the caribbean or beyond.

Description : Read Now Our Present Complaint by Charles E. Rosenberg and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. charles e. rosenberg, one of the world's most influential historians of medicine, presents a fascinating analysis of the current tensions in american medicine. situating these tensions within their historical and social contexts, rosenberg investigates the fundamental characteristics of medicine: how we think about disease, how the medical profession thinks about itself and its moral and intellectual responsibilities, and what prospective patients—all of us—expect from medicine and the medical profession. he explores the nature and definition of disease and how ideas of disease causation reflect social values and cultural negotiations. his analyses of alternative medicine and bioethics consider the historically specific ways in which we define and seek to control what is appropriately medical. at a time when clinical care and biomedical research generate as much angst as they offer cures, this volume provides valuable insight into how the practice of medicine has evolved, where it is going, and how lessons from history can improve its prognosis.
