Description : Read Now Medical Anthropology At The Intersections by Marcia C. Inhorn and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in this important collection, prominent scholars who helped to establish medical anthropology as an area of study reflect on the field's past, present, and future. in doing so, they demonstrate that medical anthropology has developed dynamically, through its intersections with activism, with other subfields in anthropology, and with disciplines as varied as public health, the biosciences, and studies of race and ethnicity. each of the contributors addresses one or more of these intersections. some trace the evolution of medical anthropology in relation to fields including feminist technoscience, medical history, and international and area studies. other contributors question the assumptions underlying mental health, global public health, and genetics and genomics, areas of inquiry now central to contemporary medical anthropology. essays on the field's engagements with disability studies, public policy, and gender and sexuality studies illuminate the commitments of many medical anthropologists to public-health and human-rights activism. essential reading for all those interested in medical anthropology, this collection offers productive insight into the field and its future, as viewed by some of the world's leading medical anthropologists. contributors. lawrence cohen, didier fassin, faye ginsburg, marcia c. inhorn, arthur kleinman, margaret lock, emily martin, lynn m. morgan, richard parker, rayna rapp, merrill singer, emily a. wentzell

Description : Read Now Maturing Masculinities by Emily A. Wentzell and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. maturing masculinities is a nuanced exploration of how older men in urban mexico incorporate aging, chronic illness, changing social relationships, and decreasing erectile function into their conceptions of themselves as men. it is based on interviews that emily a. wentzell conducted with more than 250 male patients in the urology clinic of a government-run hospital in cuernavaca. drawing on science studies, medical anthropology, and gender theory, wentzell suggests the idea of "composite masculinities" as a paradigm for understanding how men incorporate physical and social change into gendered selfhoods. erectile dysfunction treatments like viagra are popular in mexico, where stereotypes of men as sex-obsessed "machos" persist. however, most of the men wentzell interviewed saw erectile difficulty as a chance to demonstrate difference from this stereotype. rather than using drugs to continue youthful sex lives, many collaborated with wives and physicians to frame erectile difficulty as a prompt to embody age-appropriate, mature masculinities.

Brown and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the editors of the third edition of the seminal textbook understanding and applying medical anthropology bring it completely up to date for both instructors and students. the collection of 49 readings (17 of them new to this edition) offers extensive background description and exposes students to the breadth of theoretical, methodological, and practical perspectives and issues in the field of medical anthropology. the text provides specific examples and case studies of research as it is applied to a range of health settings: from cross-cultural clinical encounters to cultural analysis of new biomedical technologies and the implementation of programs in global health settings. the new edition features: • a major revision that eliminates many older readings in favor of more fresh, relevant selections; • a new section on structural violence that looks at the impact of poverty and other forms of social marginalization on health; • an updated and expanded section on “conceptual tools,” including new research and ideas that are currently driving the field of medical anthropology forward (such as epigenetics and syndemics); • new chapters on climate change, ebola, ptsd among iraq/afghanistan veterans, eating disorders, and autism, among others; • recent articles from margaret mead award winners sera young, seth holmes, and erin finley, along with new articles by such established medical anthropologists as paul farmer and merrill singer.

Description : Read Now All In Your Head by Mara Buchbinder and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. although pain is a universal human experience, many view the pain of others as private, resistant to language, and, therefore, essentially unknowable. and, yet, despite the obvious limits to comprehending another’s internal state, language is all that we have to translate pain from the solitary and unknowable to a phenomenon richly described in literature, medicine, and everyday life. without denying the private dimensions of pain, all in your head offers an entirely fresh perspective that considers how pain may be configured, managed, explained, and even experienced in deeply relational ways. drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in a pediatric pain clinic in california, mara buchbinder explores how clinicians, adolescent patients, and their families make sense of puzzling symptoms and work to alleviate pain. through careful attention to the language of pain—including narratives, conversations, models, and metaphors—and detailed analysis of how young pain sufferers make meaning through interactions with others, her book reveals that however private pain may be, making sense of it is profoundly social.

Description : Read Now Evolutionary Medicine And Health by Wenda R. Trevathan and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. building on the success of their groundbreaking anthology evolutionary medicine (oup, 1999), wenda r. trevathan, e. o. smith, and james j. mckenna provide an up-to-date and thought-provoking introduction to the field with this new collection of essays. ideal for courses in evolutionary medicine, medical anthropology, and the evolution of human disease, evolutionary medicine and health: new perspectives presents twenty-three original articles that examine how human evolution relates to a broad range of contemporary health problems including infectious, chronic, nutritional, and mental diseases and disorders. topics covered include disease susceptibility in cultural context, substance abuse and addiction, sleep disorders, preeclampsia, altitude-related hypoxia, the biological context of menstruation, and the role of stress in modern life. an international team of preeminent scholars in biological anthropology, medicine, biology, psychology, and geography contributed the selections. together they represent a uniquely integrative and multidisciplinary approach that takes into account the dialogue between biology and culture as it relates to understanding, treating, and preventing disease. a common theme throughout is the description of cases in which biological human development conflicts with culturally based individual behaviors that determine health outcomes. detailed, evidence-based arguments make the case that all aspects of the human condition covered in the volume have an evolutionary basis, while theoretical discussions using other empirical evidence critique the gaps that still remain in evolutionary approaches to health. evolutionary medicine and health: new perspectives features an introductory overview that covers the field's diverse array of topics, questions, lines of evidence, and perspectives. in addition, the editors provide introductions to each essay and an extensive bibliography that represents a state-of-the-art survey of the literature. a companionwebsite at www.oup.com/us/evolmed offers a full bibliography and links to source articles, reports, and databases. written in an engaging style that is accessible to students, professionals, and general readers, this book offers a unique look at how an evolutionary perspective has become increasingly relevant to the health field and medical practice.
