Description : Read Now The Secular Clergy In England 1066 1216 by Hugh M. Thomas and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. secular clerics - priests and other clerics outside of monastic orders - have been neglected in the modern scholarship, yet the secular clergy were among the most influential and powerful groups in european society during the central middle ages. as ecclesiastical administrators and as parish priests, they kept the church functioning. many were as wealthy as knights or barons and they provided much of the personnel for the growing royal administration. many of theleading intellectuals of the period were secular clerics, and they were central to the creation of universities and the development of the book trade. arguably, they were more important than any othergroup in creating the twelfth-century renaissance. this volume aims to reveal their importance through a major study of the secular clergy below the level of bishop in england from 1066 to 1216.

Description : Read Now Before The Gregorian Reform by John Howe and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. historians typically single out the hundred-year period from about 1050 to 1150 as the pivotal moment in the history of the latin church, for it was then that the gregorian reform movement established the ecclesiastical structure that would ensure rome’s dominance throughout the middle ages and beyond. in before the gregorian reform john howe challenges this familiar narrative by examining earlier, "pre-gregorian" reform efforts within the church. he finds that they were more extensive and widespread than previously thought and that they actually established a foundation for the subsequent gregorian reform movement. the low point in the history of christendom came in the late ninth and early tenth centuries—a period when much of europe was overwhelmed by barbarian raids and widespread civil disorder, which left the church in a state of disarray. as howe shows, however, the destruction gave rise to creativity. aristocrats and churchmen rebuilt churches and constructed new ones, competing against each other so that church building, like castle building, acquired its own momentum. patrons strove to improve ecclesiastical furnishings, liturgy, and spirituality. schools were constructed to staff the new churches. moreover, howe shows that these reform efforts paralleled broader economic, social, and cultural trends in western europe including the revival of long-distance trade, the rise of technology, and the emergence of feudal lordship. the result was that by the mid-eleventh century a wealthy, unified, better-organized, better-educated, more spiritually sensitive latin church was assuming a leading place in the broader christian world. before the gregorian reform challenges us to rethink the history of the church and its place in the broader narrative of european history. compellingly written and generously illustrated, it is a book for all medievalists as well as general readers interested in the middle ages and church history.

Description : Read Now Strategies Of Writing by Petra Schulte and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. trust is the basis of all social relations. a society in which trust is not assured, will not, in the end, endure. trust presupposes the concordance of word and deed. rather than an emotion, trust is an attitude based on experience. it is not created spontaneously, but requires a process of observation and socialization. this implies that the preconditions for trust are culturally determined and subject to change. trust is expressed through communication. writing may engender trust, and trust may be placed in written texts. the contributions to this volume address the complex relationships between 'trust' and 'writing' in the middle ages. they deal with charters, historiography, letters, political communication, and the possibilities of trust in writing. some of the questions addressed are: does writing as a medium engender trust irrespective of the contents of the written text? was trust in writing dependent on trust in an authority? are there suggestions that the written form of the text was meant to confer trust on its contents? did rituals take place (before or during the writing of the text, or during its handing over to the recipient) that were meant to enhance the text's trustworthiness? can changes be observed in the strategies of engendering trust? was trust considered food for reflection in written texts? what was considered to constitute a breach of trust? the volume is dedicated to michael clanchy, whose work inspired much of its contents.

Description : Read Now Image Knife And Gluepot Early Assemblage In Manuscript And Print by Kathryn M. Rudy and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in this ingenious study, kathryn rudy takes the reader on a journey to trace the birth, life and afterlife of a netherlandish book of hours made in 1500. image, knife, and gluepot painstakingly reconstructs the process by which this manuscript was created and discusses its significance as a text at the forefront of fifteenth-century book production, when the invention of mechanically-produced images led to the creation of new multimedia objects. rudy then travels to the nineteenth century to examine the phenomenon of manuscript books being pillaged for their prints and drawings: she has diligently tracked down the dismembered parts of this book of hours for the first time. image, knife, and gluepot also documents rudy’s twenty-first-century research process, as she hunts through archives while grappling with the logistics and occasionally the limits of academic research. this is a timely volume, focusing on questions of materiality at the forefront of medieval and literary studies. beautifully illustrated throughout, its use of original material and its striking interdisciplinary approach, combining book and art history, make it a significant academic achievement. image, knife, and gluepot is a valuable text for any scholar in the fields of medieval studies, the history of early books and publishing, cultural history or material culture. written in rudy’s inimitable style, it will also be rewarding for any student enrolled in a course on manuscript production, as well as non-specialists interested in the afterlives of manuscripts and prints. the royal society of edinburgh has generously contributed to this open access publication. due to the number and quality of the images in this book, we have provided the option of a more expensive hardback edition, printed on the best quality paper available, in order to present the images as clearly and beautifully as possible. we hope this range of options — the freely available pdf, html and xml editions; the economically priced epub, mobi and paperback editions; and the more expensively printed hardback — will satisfy everyone. furthermore the html edition allows readers to magnify the images of the manuscripts displayed in the book.
