Description : Read Now John Donne S Poetry And Early Modern Visual Culture by Ann Hurley and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this study argues the thesis that john donne's poetry, already well-served by the insightful close readings of earlier generations of scholars, can now profit from being read in the context of early modern cultural experience, specifically its visual culture. it points out that the focus on visual culture allows for a non-monolithic, flexible reading of donne's verse, in part because it acknowledges that while the complexity of his religious identity has been well-explored, the complexity of his secular interest has perhaps been less thoroughly examined. since a study of early modern visual culture is deeply concerned with the vicissitudes of the image, both religious and secular, such a context serves to integrate what in donne sometimes invites polarity. focused on close readings of several poems, the study is in two parts. on the one hand, it examines the visual culture of early modern england and argues that reading donne's poetry enhances our understanding of how that culture actually operated when looked at through the experience of a practicing poet. on the other, it looks at donne's verse and argues that reading that against the visual culture through which it participated adds a dimension to that verse that would otherwise be less accessible to us.

Description : Read Now Apollinaire Visual Poetry And Art Criticism by Willard Bohn and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. "this study examines a series of visual poems that guillaume apollinaire composed in 1917 for an exhibition of paintings by leopold survage and irene lagut. by this date apollinaire had become an accomplished practitioner of visual poetry and was thoroughly at ease with the genre. depicting horses, flowers, landscapes, clocks, the survage/lagut series represents the culmination of his visual experiments and contains some of his most pleasing forms. conceived as examples of poesie critique ("critical poetry"), the poems in the series comment in diverse ways on the paintings and combine critical perspectives with techniques associated with the prose poem. utilizing insights developed in the aesthetics of visual poetry, 1914-1928, the author seeks to shed new light on apollinaire's visual poetry through an in-depth analysis of this compact group of works. the analysis itself concentrates on three distinct areas: the poem as poem, the poem as visual poem, and the poem as criticism. the first focuses on the verbal elements of the poetry, the second on the relationship between these and the visual elements, and the third on the relationship of the total poem to paintings by lagut and survage." "as one would expect, part of the book is directed toward readers who are familiar with apollinaire or who would like to know more about him. since apollinaire is a major poet, any project connected with his work will also interest readers who are concerned with modern french poetry in general. while at first glance the texts themselves may appear to be peripheral, the principles they embody are central not only to apollinaire's poetry but to modern aesthetics as well. the more we learn about the calligrams, the better equipped we will be to appreciate his efforts and the closer we will come to understanding his concept of visual poetry. similar remarks apply to apollinaire's experiments with cubist poetry and with the poem in prose - both examined in the present volume. more than anything, perhaps, this volume strives to elucidate the concept of poesie critique, which has received very little attention. this omission is surprising since the genre influenced the surrealist invention of poesie synthetique as well as many writers who followed apollinaire, trying to reconcile poetry and criticism." "in addition to clarifying issues related to the poems themselves, the study attempts to accomplish two objectives that are more ambitious. first, it seeks to increase our theoretical knowledge regarding visual poetry in general. since this genre has enjoyed widespread popularity in the twentieth century, it is closely linked to modern existence itself. second, the study seeks to expand our knowledge of the relations between poetry and painting. since there has been extensive cross-fertilization between them for the better part of a century, this subject provides an additional link to the modern experience."--book jacket.title summary field provided by blackwell north america, inc. all rights reserved

Description : Read Now Pattern Poetry by Dick Higgins and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. pattern poetry—poetry from before 1900 that fuses literature and visual art—has existed since the times of ancient crete and egypt. less well known than modern visual poetry, pattern poetry has been produced in most european and american literatures, and, as close analogues, in many oriental literatures. this book tells the history of pattern poetry, documenting and classifying more than 2,000 works. illustrations of each major genre of pattern poem are included. the book also explores related forms, such as graphic music notations, shaped prose, sound poetry, and poetic labyrinths, to name a few. a glossary, essays by two world authorities on the oriental analogues to the pattern poem, and the first full bibliography on pattern poetry complete the work. with this book, dick higgins has provided an indispensable tool for opening up the area of pattern poetry to the scholar and the lay reader alike, bringing order to what has been an obscure and confusing area, and delighting the eye and mind by casting light on these forgotten treasures.

Description : Read Now Experimental Visual Concrete by Kenneth David Jackson and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book addresses the major critical and interpretive issues of contemporary experimental poetic texts.critical approaches, historical contexts, and basic concepts are surveyed in two introductory essays, while the study of poetic movements in historical context and the chronological trajectory of production of experimental texts are discussed in the first major segment of the volume, experimentation in its historical moment. the principal topic addressed here is the nature of experimental poetry in revolutionary social contexts. the second major theme, focused upon in the section experimentation in the language arts, is that of language as a vehicle for experiments and cognitive quests, aimed not at the production of truth or social emancipation but at experiential aspects of language and language use. haroldo de campos's fragmented poetic prose work galàxias is a highlighted topic of attention, as are poetic and language experiments in lettrism, fluxus, sound poetry, and new technological poetries. the development of the basic tenets of concrete poetry and current critical perspectives on its status in poetical experimentation constitute the basis of the third section of the book, concrete and neo-concrete poetry. the relationship of historical concrete poetry to artistic genres is presented, with special emphasis on brazil and on contemporary visual writing. the section memoirs of concrete, in the context of oral history, includes retrospective accounts by two of concrete poetry's most renowned editors.the closing section of this book presents statements on the theory and practice of avant-garde poetry by 22 participants in the yale symphosymposium on contemporary poetics and concretism.

Description : Read Now The Written Poem by Rosemary Huisman and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this text discusses the visual and graphic conventions in contemporary poetry in english. it defines contemporary poetry and its historical construction as a "seen object" and uses literary and social theory of the 1990s to facilitate the study. in examining how a poem is recognized, the interpretive conventions for reading it and how the spacial arrangement on the page is meaningful for contemporary poetry, the text takes examples from individual poems. there is also a focus on changes in manuscript conventions from old to middle english poetry and the change from a social to a personal understanding of poetic meaning from the late 18th through the 19th century.
