Description : Read Now New Industries From New Places by Neil Gregory and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. software comes from india, hardware comes from china. why is that? why did china and india take such different paths to global dominance in new high-tech industries? will their paths continue to diverge or converge? how can other countries learn from their successes--and failures--in reaching global scale in new industries? to answer these questions, this book presents the first rigorous comparison of the growth of the it industries in china and india, based on interviews with over 300 companies. it explains the different growth paths of the software and hardware sectors in each country, providing insights into the factors behind the emergence of china and india as global economic powers. it provides a compelling case study of how differences in economic policies and the investment climate affect industrial growth. this book sheds new light on common debates on 'china versus india', on why india is the software capital of the world while china is a manufacturing powerhouse. it refutes common myths about the growth of these industries for example, the role of non-resident indians or the y2k problem in the growth of the indian software industry, the role of government intervention in industrial growth, and the relative size of china and india's software industries.

Description : Read Now The New Geography Of Jobs by Enrico Moretti and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. “a timely and smart discussion of how different cities and regions have made a changing economy work for them – and how policymakers can learn from that to lift the circumstances of working americans everywhere.”—barack obama we’re used to thinking of the united states in opposing terms: red versus blue, haves versus have-nots. but today there are three americas. at one extreme are the brain hubs—cities like san francisco, boston, and durham—with workers who are among the most productive, creative, and best paid on the planet. at the other extreme are former manufacturing capitals, which are rapidly losing jobs and residents. the rest of america could go either way. for the past thirty years, the three americas have been growing apart at an accelerating rate. this divergence is one the most important developments in the history of the united states and is reshaping the very fabric of our society, affecting all aspects of our lives, from health and education to family stability and political engagement. but the winners and losers aren’t necessarily who you’d expect. enrico moretti’s groundbreaking research shows that you don’t have to be a scientist or an engineer to thrive in one of the brain hubs. carpenters, taxi-drivers, teachers, nurses, and other local service jobs are created at a ratio of five-to-one in the brain hubs, raising salaries and standard of living for all. dealing with this split—supporting growth in the hubs while arresting the decline elsewhere—is the challenge of the century, and the new geography of jobs lights the way.

Description : Read Now Creativity In Peripheral Places by Chris Gibson and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. creativity is said to be the fuel of the contemporary economy. dynamic industries such as film, music, television and design have changed the fortunes of entire cities, from nashville to los angeles, barcelona to brisbane and beyond. yet creativity remains mercurial – it is at the heart of industrial innovation and can attract investment, but it is also an intangible, personal quality and experience. what exactly constitutes creativity? drawing on examples as diverse as postcard design, classical music, landscape art, tattooing, aboriginal hip-hop, and rock sculpture, this book seeks to explore and redefine creativity as both economic and cultural phenomenon. creativity also has a peculiar geography. beyond hollywood, creativity is evident in suburban, rural and remote places – a quotidian, vernacular, eclectic enterprise. in seeking to redefine the creative industries, this book brings together geographers, historians, sociologists, cultural studies scholars and media/communications experts to explore creativity in diverse places outside major cities. these are places that are physically and/or metaphorically remote, are small in population terms, or which because of old industrial legacies are assumed by others to be unsophisticated or marginal in an imaginary geography of creativity. this book reveals the richness and depth, the challenges and surprises of being creative beyond city limits. this book was originally published as a special issue of australian geographer.

Description : Read Now New Faces In New Places by Douglas S. Massey and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. beginning in the 1990s, immigrants to the united states increasingly bypassed traditional gateway cites such as los angeles and new york to settle in smaller towns and cities throughout the nation. with immigrant communities popping up in so many new places, questions about ethnic diversity and immigrant assimilation confront more and more americans. new faces in new places, edited by distinguished sociologist douglas massey, explores today's geography of immigration and examines the ways in which native-born americans are dealing with their new neighbors. using the latest census data and other population surveys, new faces in new places examines the causes and consequences of the shift toward new immigrant destinations. contributors mark leach and frank bean examine the growing demand for low-wage labor and lower housing costs that have attracted many immigrants to move beyond the larger cities. katharine donato, charles tolbert, alfred nucci, and yukio kawano report that the majority of mexican immigrants are no longer single male workers but entire families, who are settling in small towns and creating a surge among some rural populations long in decline. katherine fennelly shows how opinions about the growing immigrant population in a small minnesota town are divided along socioeconomic lines among the local inhabitants. the town's leadership and professional elites focus on immigrant contributions to the economic development and the diversification of the community, while working class residents fear new immigrants will bring crime and an increased tax burden to their communities. helen marrow reports that many african americans in the rural south object to hispanic immigrants benefiting from affirmative action even though they have just arrived in the united states and never experienced historical discrimination. as douglas massey argues in his conclusion, many of the towns profiled in this volume are not equipped with the social and economic institutions to help assimilate new immigrants that are available in the traditional immigrant gateways of new york, los angeles, and chicago. and the continual replenishment of the flow of immigrants may adversely affect the nation's perception of how today's newcomers are assimilating relative to previous waves of immigrants. new faces in new places illustrates the many ways that communities across the nation are reacting to the arrival of immigrant newcomers, and suggests that patterns and processes of assimilation in the twenty-first century may be quite different from those of the past. enriched by perspectives from sociology, anthropology, and geography new faces in new places is essential reading for scholars of immigration and all those interested in learning the facts about new faces in new places in america.

Description : Read Now Exporting Services by Arti Grover Goswami and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the past two decades have seen exciting changes with developing countries emerging as exporters of services. technological developments now make it easier to trade services across borders. but other avenues are being exploited: tourists visit not just to sightsee but also to be treated and educated, service providers move abroad under innovative new schemes, and some developing countries defy traditional notions by investing abroad in services. "exporting services: a developing country perspective" takes a brave approach, combining exploratory econometric analysis with detailed case studies of representative countries: brazil, chile, the arab republic of egypt, india, kenya, malaysia, and the philippines. two questions lead the analysis: how did these developing countries succeed in exporting services? what policy mix was successful and what strategies did not deliver the expected results? the analysis evaluates the role of three sets of factors: first, the fundamentals, which include a country’s factor endowments, infrastructure, and institutional quality; second, policies affecting trade, investment, and labor mobility in services; and third, proactive policies in services designed to promote exports or investment. the case studies illustrate the complex nature of reforms and policy making in the service sector as well as the benefits of well-implemented reforms. although success seems to be explained by a set of conditions that are difficult to replicate, common features can also be identified. several countries have adopted policies to support exports, especially exports of information technology–related services. this resource will be valuable for policy makers, experts, and academics who are engaged in efforts to reform service and investment policies in their own country.
