Description : Read Now Old Time Music And Dance by John Bealle and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in the summer of 1972, a group of young people in bloomington, indiana, began a weekly gathering with the purpose of reviving traditional american old-time music and dance. in time, the group became a kind of accidental utopia, a community bound by celebration and deliberately void of structure and authority. in this joyful and engaging book, john bealle tells the lively history of the bloomington old-time music and dance group -- how it was formed, how it evolved its unique culture, and how it grew to shape and influence new waves of traditional music and dance. broader questions about the folk revival movement, social resistance, counter culture, authenticity, and identity intersect this delightful history. more than a story about the people who forged the group or an extraordinary convergence of talent and creativity, old-time music and dance follows the threads of american folk culture and the social experience generated by this living tradition of music and dance.

Description : Read Now A Passion For Polka by Victor Greene and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. not so long ago, songs by the andrews sisters and lawrence welk blasted from phonographs, lilted over the radio, and dazzled television viewers across the country. lending star quality to the ethnic music of poles, italians, slovaks, jews, and scandinavians, luminaries like frankie yankovic, the polka king, and "whoopee john" wilfart became household names to millions of americans. in this vivid and engaging book, victor greene uncovers a wonderful corner of american social history as he traces the popularization of old-time ethnic music from the turn of the century to the 1960s. drawing on newspaper clippings, private collections, ethnic societies, photographs, recordings, and interviews with musicians and promoters, greene chronicles the emergence of a new mass culture that drew heavily on the vivid color, music, and dance of ethnic communities. in this story of american ethnic music, with its countless entertainers performing never-forgotten tunes in hundreds of small cities around the country, greene revises our notion of how many americans experienced cultural life. in the polka belt, extending from connecticut to nebraska and from texas up to minnesota and the dakotas, not only were polkas, laendlers, schottisches, and waltzes a musical passion, but they shone a scintillating new light on the american cultural landscape. greene follows the fortunes of groups like the gold chain bohemians, illuminating the development of an important segment of american popular music that fed the craze for international dance music. and even though old-time music declined in the 1960s, overtaken by rock and roll, a new grammy for the polka was initiated in 1986. in its ebullience and vitality, the genre endures.

Description : Read Now Hoedowns Reels And Frolics by Phil Jamison and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in hoedowns, reels, and frolics, old-time musician and flatfoot dancer philip jamison journeys into the past and surveys the present to tell the story behind the square dances, step dances, reels, and other forms of dance practiced in southern appalachia. these distinctive folk dances, jamison argues, are not the unaltered jigs and reels brought by early british settlers, but hybrids that developed over time by adopting and incorporating elements from other popular forms. he traces the forms from their european, african american, and native american roots to the modern day. on the way he explores the powerful influence of black culture, showing how practices such as calling dances as well as specific kinds of steps combined with white european forms to create distinctly "american" dances. from cakewalks to clogging, and from the shoo-fly swing to the virginia reel, hoedowns, reels, and frolics reinterprets an essential aspect of appalachian culture.

Description : Read Now Play Of A Fiddle by Gerald Milnes and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. play of a fiddle gives voice to people who steadfastly hold to and build on the folk traditions of their ancestors. while encountering the influences of an increasingly overwhelming popular culture, the men and women in this book follow age-old patterns of folklife and custom, making their own music and dance in celebration of them. shedding new light on a region that maintains ties to the cultural identities of its earliest european and african inhabitants, gerald milnes shows how folk music in west virginia borrowed rhythmic, melodic, and vocal forms from the celtic, anglo, germanic, and african traditions. these elements have come together to create a body of music tied more to place and circumstance than to ethnicity. milnes explores the legacies of the state's best-known performers and musical families. he discusses religious music, balladeering, the influence of black musicians and styles, dancing, banjo and dulcimer traditions, and the importance of old-time music as a cultural pillar of west virginia life. a musician himself, milnes has been collecting songs and stories in west virginia for more than twenty-five years. the result is an enjoyable book filled with anecdotes, local history, and keen observations about musical lives.

Description : Read Now Developing An All School Model For Elementary Integrative Music Learning by Carol E. Reed-Jones and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the purpose of this study was to investigate the potential for increasing informal music-making in elementary school culture, and create a model of such music-making. precedence for this model can be found in the literature of ethnomusicology, educational psychology and learning theory, multicultural music education, and cultural anthropology. literature from four distinct traditions and contexts of music-making in integrative sociocultural contexts-sub-saharan african ngoma, and community music as manifested in new orleans second lines, old-time music and dance, and summer camp music-making-was parsed with a philosophical lens to determine and assess possible areas of intersection between these four participatory cultures and north american public school culture. each of these five areas was examined through a comprehensive review of literature to define their salient characteristics. these characteristics were sorted to determine commonalities between areas, and the zones of intersection became the basis for a speculative model of integrative music learning, featuring the inclusion of musical opportunities and interludes throughout the school day, thus taking school music beyond the confines of the music room. instruction in music classes would still continue, enhanced in this model by supplemental learning opportunities inspired by the informal learning of traditional world musics, the participatory practice of new orleans second line parades, old-time music and dance, and summer camp music culture. this model of integrative learning is also informed by current educational best practices such as child-centered learning, peer tutoring, experiential learning, and multicultural perspectives. it acknowledges the diversity of traditions consulted, while aiming for the unity in their seemingly disparate disciplines. five universal characteristics were uncovered in the search for areas of intersection between north american elementary school culture, child culture, ngoma music-making, and community music-style music-making in new orleans, old-time music and dance, and summer camp contexts: (a) song; (b) play; (c) informal learning, as evidenced by oral tradition, peer tutoring, self-learning; (d) kinesthetic learning; and (e) contextualized learning, as evidenced in the sociocultural uses of music and situated learning. this model strives for the enactment of school music as a vital and integral part of daily school culture.

Description : Read Now Kenny Hall S Music Book Old Time Music Fiddle Mandolin by KENNY HALL and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. since the 1960's here has been an extraordinary revival of old-time string band music in california, and indeed throughout the american west. despite being born blind, kenny hall has been a mainstay of many fiddle festivals and of the western fiddle and string band revival in general. kenny's musical style is passionate and energetic. this book is a helpful guide to his vast repertoire learned through years of careful listening. it is also a wonderful addition to the fiddler's bookshelf and a fitting tribute to a man who, for many an aspiring fiddler, has been a friend, guide, exemplar, and patron. many of the tunes includes nonsense lyrics that kenny used to help him remember the melody, and each tune is accompanied by kenny's comments. the book is divided into five chapters: fiddle- based tunes (fiddle faddle), mandolin-based tunes (rags, tags, and wags), waltzes, tunes from an origin other than the united states or the british isles (kenny's rambles); and vocal-based pieces including lyrics (songs, ballads, ditties). some of the transcriptions are written primarily for fiddle or mandolin, but most tunes can be performed on either instrument. this deluxe guide to kenny hall's vast repertoire offers fans of old-time music a great way to get to know kenny and his music.
