Description : Read Now Ovidian Bibliofictions And The Tudor Book by Lindsay Ann Reid and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. ovidian bibliofictions and the tudor book examines the historical and the fictionalized reception of ovid’s poetry in the literature and books of tudor england. it does so through the study of a particular set of ovidian narratives-namely, those concerning the protean heroines of the heroides and metamorphoses. in the late medieval and renaissance eras, ovid’s poetry stimulated the vernacular imaginations of authors ranging from geoffrey chaucer and john gower to isabella whitney, william shakespeare, and michael drayton. ovid’s english protégés replicated and expanded upon the roman poet’s distinctive and frequently remarked ’bookishness’ in their own adaptations of his works. focusing on the postclassical discourses that ovid’s poetry stimulated, ovidian bibliofictions and the tudor book engages with vibrant current debates about the book as material object as it explores the ovidian-inspired mythologies and bibliographical aetiologies that informed the sixteenth-century creation, reproduction, and representation of books. further, author lindsay ann reid’s discussions of ovidianism provide alternative models for thinking about the dynamics of reception, adaptation, and imitatio. while there is a sizeable body of published work on ovid and chaucer as well as on the ubiquitous ovidianism of the 1590s, there has been comparatively little scholarship on ovid’s reception between these two eras. ovidian bibliofictions and the tudor book begins to fill this gap between the ages of chaucer and shakespeare by dedicating attention to the literature of the early tudor era. in so doing, this book also contributes to current discussions surrounding medieval/renaissance periodization.

Description : Read Now Killing Hercules by Richard Rowland and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book offers an entirely new reception history of the myth of hercules and his wife/killer deianira. the book poses, and attempts to answer, two important and related questions. first, why have artists across two millennia felt compelled to revisit this particular myth to express anxieties about violence at both a global and domestic level? secondly, from the moment that sophocles disrupted a myth about the definitive exemplar of masculinity and martial prowess and turned it into a story about domestic abuse, through to a 2014 production of handel’s hercules that was set in the context of the ‘war on terror’, the reception history of this myth has been one of discontinuity and conflict; how and why does each culture reinvent this narrative to address its own concerns and discontents, and how does each generation speak to, qualify or annihilate the certainties of its predecessors in order to understand, contain or exonerate the aggression with which their governors – of state and of the household – so often enforce their authority, and the violence to which their nations, and their homes, are perennially vulnerable?

Binns and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. ovid, rome’s most cynical and worldly love poet, has not until recently been highly regarded among latin poets. now, however, his reputation is growing, and this volume is an important contribution to the re-establishment of ovid’s claims to critical attention. this collection of essays ranges over a wide variety of themes and works: ovid’s development of the elegiac tradition handed down to him from propertius, catullus and tibullus; the often disparaged and neglected heroides; the poetry of ovid’s miserable exile by the black sea; the poetic diction of the metamorphoses, ovid’s lengthy mythological epic which codified classical myth and legend, and has strong claims to be considered, with the exception of virgil’s aeneid, rome’s greatest epic poem; humour and the blending of the didactic and elegiac traditions in the ars amatoria and remedia amoris. finally, ovid’s incomparable influence in the middle ages and sixteenth century is examined.

Description : Read Now Simple Forms by Douglas Gray and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. simple forms is a study of popular or folk literature in the medieval period. focusing both on the vast body of oral literature that lies behind the written texts which have survived from the medieval period and on the popular literature provided by literate authors for audiences of hearers or readers with varying degrees of literacy, douglas gray leads new readers to a productively complicated understanding of the relationship between medieval popular culture and the culture of the learned. he argues that medieval society was stratified, in what seems to us a rigid way, but that culturally it was more flexible. literary topics, themes, and forms moved; there was much borrowing, and a constant interaction. popular tales, motifs, and ideas passed into learned or courtly works; learned forms and attitudes made their way in into popular culture. all in all this seems to have been a fruitful symbiosis. the book's twelve chapters are principally organised genre, covering epics, ballads, popular romances, folktales, the german sage, legends, animal tales and fables, proverbs, riddles, satires, songs, and drama.

Description : Read Now Psellos And The Patriarchs by Michael Psellos and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. psellos and the patriarchs: letters and funeral orations for keroullarios, leichoudes, and xiphilinos contains translations of the funeral orations written by michael psellos, the leading byzantine intellectual of the eleventh century, for the three ecumenical patriarchs of constantinople whom he knew best: michael keroullarios (1043-1058), konstantinos leichoudes (1059-1063), and ioannes xiphilinos (1064-1075). the orations are significant sources for the lives and reputations of these patriarchs; they are also a prime source for the educational reforms made by the emperor konstantinos ix monomachos in the mid-1040s, and for many events of that turbulent century that psellos witnessed, including popular uprisings, plots, civil wars, and the battle with the catholic legates in 1054. never before translated into english, the orations and letters are introduced by a detailed analysis of psellos' historical relationships with the patriarchs and an interpretation of the works. the orations are not only important historical sources: they are crucial specimens of byzantine rhetoric in a period of transition, as well as being key texts in the corpus of psellos himself. psellos used them to score important points in support of his own philosophical agenda and to make broader claims about ethics and metaphysics and the role of learning in political and ecclesiastical life. the orations are here accompanied by translations of a long letter that psellos wrote to keroullarios and a pair of letters to xiphilinos, in which he defended key aspects of his philosophical project.

Description : Read Now Shafana And Aunt Sarrinah by Alana Valentine and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. what do you do when you profoundly disagree with someone you love? wearing a hijab is a touchstone of religious identity, but it is also imbued with a complex array of historical and contemporary meanings. in alana valentine's new play, the cultural meaning of the hijab has become a wedge between generations. at the heart of shafana and aunt sarrinah is the relationship between an aunt and her niece. both devout muslims, the younger woman wants to put on a headscarf, the older woman tries to dissuade her. for aunt sarrinah, the hijab represents a world from which she has escaped; for her niece, shafana, it is a personal statement of renewed faith. alana valentine has written a startling meditation on the clash between individual freedom and community reaction and, as academic christina ho acclaims, "a quietly insightful intervention that portrays what media headlines never can; the multiple meanings of the headscarf for muslim women". (1 act, 2 female).
