Description : Read Now The Cambridge Companion To St Paul by James D. G. Dunn and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the apostle paul has been justifiably described as the first and greatest christian theologian. his letters were among the earliest documents to be included in the new testament and, as such, they shaped christian thinking from the beginning. as a missionary, theologian and pastor paul's own wrestling with theological and ethical questions of his day is paradigmatic for christian theology, not least for christianity's own identity and continuing relationship with judaism. the cambridge companion to st paul provides an important assessment of this apostle and a fresh appreciation of his continuing significance today. with eighteen chapters written by a team of leading international specialists on paul, the companion provides a sympathetic and critical overview of the apostle, covering his life and work, his letters and his theology. the volume will provide an invaluable starting point and helpful cross check for subsequent studies.

Description : Read Now The New Perspective On Paul by James D.G. Dunn and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this collection of essays highlights a dimension of paul's theology of justification that has been neglected ? that his teaching emerged as an integral part of his understanding of his commission to preach the gospel to non-jews and that his dismissal of justification by works of the law was directed not so much against jewish legalism but rather against his fellow jews' assumption that the law remained a dividing wall separating christian jews from christian gentiles. james dunn seeks to carry forward the debate on jewish soteriology, on the relation of justification by faith to judgment according to works, on christian fulfillment of the law, and on the crucial role of christ, his death and resurrection. full of detail and intriguing thought, dunn's collection will enlighten any scholar of the new testament.

Description : Read Now Faith In Jesus And Paul by Maureen W. Yeung and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. for the hundred years since w. wrede ( paulus, 1904) made the provocative claim that paul should rightly be regarded as 'the second founder of christianity', scholars have debated vigorously on the relationship between jesus and paul. past studies on the jesus-paul debate have largely been confined to either the literary or the theological level. this study looks at the issue afresh by combining the historical and the theological approaches. the discussion focuses on the issue of faith, paying special attention to two groups of jesus' sayings ('faith that can remove mountains' and 'your faith has healed/saved you') and paul's use of gen. 15:6 and hab. 2:4. the distinctive methodology of this study is to compare jesus and paul against the backdrops of the jewish biblical tradition and hellenistic parallels. the picture of the jesus-paul relationship that emerges is a most complex one. to a great extent the similarity between jesus and paul is due to their common jewish heritage. the early church plays a part in influencing paul's concept of faith and paul himself reinterprets the jewish scriptures in an innovative manner. at the same time, paul is found to be greatly indebted to jesus for his concept of faith. the method of placing jesus and paul against the jewish and hellenistic backgrounds permits a fuller appreciation of the historical and theological continuities between jesus and paul than has hitherto been possible.

Horsley and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. over the centuries, paul has been understood as the prototypical convert from judaism to christianity. at the time of pauls conversion, however, christianity did not yet exist. moreover, paul says nothing to indicate that he was abandoning judaism or israel. he, in fact, understood his mission as the fulfillment of the promises to israel and of israels own destiny. in brief, pauls gospel and mission were set over against the roman empire, not judaism.
