Description : Read Now Women And Learning In English Writing 1600 1900 by Deirdre Raftery and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book documents and analyzes an aspect of social change in england -- the opening of higher education to women. because college education for women developed in the second half of the nineteenth century, the opening of higher education to women has been viewed as an 'unexpected revolution'. this book challenges such all assumption, by indicating that the education of women had been the subject of debate and serious discussion at least since the renaissance, and it illustrates how print culture brought the debate into the public domain and contributed to the eventual opening of higher education to women. the publications examined in this study indicate that formal higher education for women had been anticipated by a significant number of seventeenth-, eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century writers whose works are here contextualised for the first time. while the focus of this study has been on printed sources, attention has also been paid to the personal papers of individuals who directly influenced the eventual opening of university education to women, and who illustrated that the success of the struggle for women's education was due to the ability of a few individuals to realise ambitions which had been held for generations.

Description : Read Now Advertising To The American Woman 1900 1999 by Daniel Delis Hill and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. whether they're students of advertising history or just reminiscing, readers will be entertained by advertising to the american woman. this is a lavishly illustrated survey of how the mass production of consumer goods, the development of the advertising industry, and the evolution of women's roles in society inextricably progressed through the twentieth century. the author focuses on the marketing perspective of the topic rather than on the consumer's point of view. inevitably, a number of cultural themes run throughout the work, illustrating in an innovative way how women's roles in society have shifted during the past hundred years. among the key issues explored is a peculiar dichotomy of american advertising that served as a conservative reflection of society and yet, at the same time, became an underlying force of progressive social change. for example, this study shows how advertisers of housekeeping products perpetuated the happy homemaker stereotype while tobacco and cosmetics marketers dismantled women's stereotypes to create an entirely new type of consumer. this is an ideal book for the student of women and/or advertising and will appeal to a large audience, including those interested in advertising, mass communication, women's studies, american history, and fashion design.

Description : Read Now Women Reading Shakespeare 1660 1900 by Ann Thompson and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. women reading shakespeare, 1660-1900 comprehensively rediscovers a lost tradition of women's writing on shakespeare. since margaret cavendish published the first critical essay on shakespeare in 1664, women have written as scholars, critics, editors, performers and popularisers of shakespeare. many found in shakespeare criticism the opportunity to raise a wide variety of issues, ranging from the use of women in society, family life, social relations and ethnic difference. in their different ways, women appropriated shakespeare to their own ends - not always in step with their male contemporaries. virtually none of this work is available today; it is unread and unknown. this fascinating anthology draws upon extensive new research to collect for the first time in one volume the shakespeare criticism of some fifty british and american women writing before 1900. it includes the work of both familiar and unknown names and represents the diversity of literary genres used by women: the scholarly article, the periodical essay, book-length studies, personal memoirs, books for children, school editions. the volume also includes previously unknown shakespeare illustrations by women, and a general introduction to the development of women's criticism of shakespeare before 1900.

Description : Read Now Teaching British Women Writers 1750 1900 by Jeanne Moskal and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the exuberant recovery from obscurity of scores of british women writers has prompted professors and publishers to revisit publication of women's writings. new curricular inclusion of these sometimes quirky, often passionate writers profoundly disrupts traditional pedagogical assumptions about what constitutes -literature-. this book addresses this radically changed educational landscape, offering practical, proven teaching strategies for newly -recovered- writers, both in special-topics courses and in traditional teaching environments. moreover, it addresses the institutional issues confronting feminist scholars who teach women writers in a variety of settings and the kinds of career-altering effects the decision to teach this material can have on junior and senior scholars alike. collectively, these essays argue that teaching noncanonical women writers invigorates the curriculum as a whole, not only by introducing the voices of women writers, but by incorporating new genres, by asking new questions about readers' assumptions and aesthetic values, and by altering the power relations between teacher and student for the better."
