Description : Read Now Chicago S Historic Prairie Avenue by William H. Tyre and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. prairie avenue evolved into chicago’s most exclusive residential street during the last three decades of the 19th century. the city’s wealthiest citizens—marshall field, philip armour, and george pullman—were soon joined by dozens of chicago’s business, social, and civic leaders, establishing a neighborhood that the chicago herald proclaimed “a cluster of millionaires not to be matched for numbers anywhere else in the country.” substantial homes were designed by the leading architects of the day, including william le baron jenney, burnham and root, solon s. beman, and richard morris hunt. by the early 1900s, however, the neighborhood began a noticeable transformation as many homes were converted to rooming houses and offices, while others were razed for construction of large plants for the printing and publishing industry. the rescue of the landmark glessner house in 1966 brought renewed attention to the area, and in 1979, the prairie avenue historic district was designated. the late 1990s saw the rebirth of the area as a highly desirable residential neighborhood known as the south loop.

"the prairies are webber's physical and spiritual home. born and raised in drumheller and now living in calgary webber has a palpable connection to the places he photographs. his interpretations are direct, sincere and invested with a sense of history and intimacy that imbues his photographs with a heightened, surreal sense of colour and ambiguity that moves them from the ordinary into the realm of the extraordinary. haunting, touching, evocative and enigmatic, these images occupy a place somewhere between everywhere and nowhere." --tobi bruce, curator at the art gallery of hamilton the 200 colour photographs assembled in webber's latest portfolio, alberta book, have been selected from an archive of work spanning nearly 40 years. in this collection viewers will find deteriorating signage that remains almost garishly bright; chrome details from vintage automobiles that still sparkle in the sun; forgotten buildings that have fallen into gentle disrepair; hand-painted window lettering that goes unread; and abandoned landscapes that echo with the whispers of residents long gone. set against the bright blue alberta sky or rolling clouds bursting with prairie thunder, these images glow with warm affection for the humble and reticent structures of alberta's past. with narrative appreciations from award-winning alberta writer fred stenson and acclaimed alberta poet rosemary griebel, alberta book captures and preserves an important part of the province's visual heritage.

Description : Read Now Will County by David A. Belden and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. later that same year, workers broke ground for the nearly 100-mile-long illinois and michigan canal between the illinois and chicago rivers. the opening of the chicago sanitary and ship canal and the movement of industry away from chicago caused manufacturers to turn their attention to will. as the county's population grew, the unincorporated area between joliet and chicago's southern suburbs continued to shrink. the transportation ties linking chicago with the communities of will county--traces, paths, wagon roads, canals, rail lines, plank roads, and highways--helped create an expanding metropolitan region. the early history and unique growth of will county is showcased in this book. over 200 vintage postcards provide an interesting glimpse into the social, material, and cultural history of will county in the early 20th century.
