Description : Read Now Resistance 91 Achievements And Developments In Combating Pesticide Resistance by Society of Chemical Industry (Great Britain) and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the development of pesticide resistance in arthropod pests, plant pathogens and weeds can be viewed and studied from two contrasting perspectives. at a fundamental level, resistance provides an almost ideal example of adaptation to withstand severe environmental stress. population geneticists, biochemists and, most recently, molecular biologists have cast considerable light on the nature of this adaptation in diverse taxonomic groups, and on factors determining its selection and spread within and between populations. unlike most evolutionary phenomena, however, resistance is also of immediate practical and economic significance. not only has the number of resistant species continued to increase inexorably, but there has been an alarming increase in the severity and extent of some resistance problems. cases of organisms resisting virtually all available pesticides are by no means uncommon, and pose a formidable challenge in view of present difficulties in discovering and developing novel chemicals. although most occurrences of resistance were initially monofactorial, resistance now frequently involves a suite of coexisting mechanisms that protect organisms against the same or different pesticide groups, and may even predispose them to resist new, as yet unused chemicals.

Description : Read Now Ecology And Conservation Of Southeast Asian Marine And Freshwater Environments Including Wetlands by A. Sasekumar and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. a major concern among ecologists in and outside the asean region is the degradation of the environment, and the overexploitation of freshwater and marine resources. there is as yet no indication that freshwater and marine resources are being managed on a sustainable basis, and loss of wetlands, whether freshwater swamps or mangrove swamps, is a major problem in the asean region. reclamation of mangrove swamps for aquaculture and agriculture seems to be a continuous activity here and the status of marine parks should also be examined in the light of recent resort development acitivities on small islands. this volume contains numerous recommendations for the promotion of ecological studies and regional cooperation in marine, freshwater ecology and conservation, with special emphasis on the common water masses like the strait of malacca, gulf of thailand and the south china sea.

Description : Read Now Plant And Human Health Volume 2 by Munir Ozturk and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. early anthropological evidence for plant use as medicine is 60,000 years old as reported from the neanderthal grave in iraq. the importance of plants as medicine is further supported by archeological evidence from asia and the middle east. today, around 1.4 billion people in south asia alone have no access to modern health care, and rely instead on traditional medicine to alleviate various symptoms. on a global basis, approximately 50 to 80 thousand plant species are used either natively or as pharmaceutical derivatives for life-threatening conditions that include diabetes, hypertension and cancers. as the demand for plant-based medicine rises, there is an unmet need to investigate the quality, safety and efficacy of these herbals by the "scientific methods". current research on drug discovery from medicinal plants involves a multifaceted approach combining botanical, phytochemical, analytical, and molecular techniques. for instance, high throughput robotic screens have been developed by industry; it is now possible to carry out 50,000 tests per day in the search for compounds which act on a key enzyme or a subset of receptors. this and other bioassays thus offer hope that one may eventually identify compounds for treating a variety of diseases or conditions. however, drug development from natural products is not without its problems. frequent challenges encountered include the procurement of raw materials, the selection and implementation of appropriate high-throughput bioassays, and the scaling-up of preparative procedures. research scientists should therefore arm themselves with the right tools and knowledge in order to harness the vast potentials of plant-based therapeutics. the main objective of plant and human health is to serve as a comprehensive guide for this endeavor. volume 1 highlights how humans from specific areas or cultures use indigenous plants. despite technological developments, herbal drugs still occupy a preferential place in a majority of the population in the third world and have slowly taken roots as alternative medicine in the west. the integration of modern science with traditional uses of herbal drugs is important for our understanding of this ethnobotanical relationship. volume 2 deals with the phytochemical and molecular characterization of herbal medicine. specifically, it will focus on the secondary metabolic compounds which afford protection against diseases. lastly, volume 3 focuses on the physiological mechanisms by which the active ingredients of medicinal plants serve to improve human health. together this three-volume collection intends to bridge the gap for herbalists, traditional and modern medical practitioners, and students and researchers in botany and horticulture.

Description : Read Now Kratom And Other Mitragynines by Robert B. Raffa and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. opioids such as morphine, codeine, and oxycodone are extracts or analogs isolated from a single source: the opium poppy. for a long time, it was believed to be nature’s only source of opioids. but it now appears that biological diversity has evolved an alternative source of opioid compounds—those derived from the plant mitragyna speciosa. this plant, known as kratom in thailand or biak-biak in malaysia, has long been used locally as treatment for pain, fever reduction, diarrhea, and even depression. kratom and other mitragynines: the chemistry and pharmacology of opioids from a non-opium source presents an introduction to the chemical and biological properties of alkaloids isolated from m. speciosa as well as their synthetic analogs. the book covers various topics including phytochemistry, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacology. current research, analgesic effects, and addiction potential are also discussed. as the first extensive text on the basic science and clinical use of kratom, the book provides readers with a concise yet comprehensive introduction to nature’s "other opioid."
