Description : Read Now Public Participation In African Constitutionalism by Tania Abbiate and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. during the last decade of the 20th century, africa has been marked by a "constitutional wind" which has blown across the continent giving impetus to constitutional reforms designed to introduce constitutionalism and good governance. one of the main features of these processes has been the promotion of public participation, encouraged by both civil society and the international community. this book aims to provide a systematic overview of participation forms and mechanisms across africa, and a critical understanding of the impact of public participation in constitution-making processes, digging beneath the rhetoric of public participation as being at the heart of any successful transition towards democracy and constitutionalism. using case studies from central african republic, egypt, kenya, libya, malawi, morocco, senegal, somalia, south africa, south sudan, tanzania, tunisia, zambia and zimbabwe, the book investigates various aspects of participatory constitution making: from conception, to processes, and specific contents that trigger ambivalent dynamics in such processes. the abstract glorification of public participation is questioned as theoretical and empirical perspectives are used to explain what public participation does in concrete terms and to identify what lessons might be drawn from those experiences. this is a valuable resource for academics, researchers and students with an interest in politics and constitution building in africa, as well as experts working in national offices, international organizations or in national and international ngos.

Description : Read Now Citizen Participation In The Age Of Contracting by Anna A. Amirkhanyan and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. citizen participation in the age of contracting is based on a simple premise: in democracies, power originates with citizens. while citizen participation in government remains a central tenet of democracy, public service delivery structures are considerably more complex today than they were fifty years ago. today, governments contract with private organizations to deliver a wide array of services. yet, we know very little about how citizens influence government decisions and policies in the "hollow state." based on nearly 100 interviews with public and private managers, our findings about the state of citizen participation in contract governance are somewhat disheartening. public and private organizations engaged citizens in a number of ways. however, most of their efforts failed to shift the power structure in communities and did not give citizens a chance to fundamentally shape local priorities and programs. instead, elected officials and professional staff largely maintained control over significant policy and administrative decisions. widespread, but narrow in their forms and impact, the participation practices we uncovered did not live up to the ideals of democracy and self-governance. citizen participation in the age of contracting is suitable for those who study public administration, as well as in other closely related fields such as nonprofit management and organizational behavior.

Description : Read Now Spaces For Change? by Andrea Cornwall and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book addresses one of the greatest challenges of our age: that of building democratic polities where all can realize their rights and claim substantive citizenship. in recent years, innovations in governance have created a plethora of new democratic spaces in many countries. yet there remains a gap between the intention to institutionalize participation and the reality of exclusion of poorer and marginalized citizens. through case studies of a diversity of institutions - hospital facility boards in south africa, a national-level deliberative process in canada, sectoral management councils and community groups in brazil, india, mexico and bangladesh, participatory budgeting in argentina, ngo-created forums in angola and bangladesh, community forums in the uk, and new intermediary spaces created by social movements in south africa - contributors examine how the democratic potential of these new spaces might be enhanced.

Description : Read Now The Professionalization Of Public Participation by Laurence Bherer and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the professionalization of public participation is an edited collection of essays by leading and emerging scholars examining the emerging profession of public participation professionals. public participation professionals are persons working in the public, private, or third sectors that are paid to design, implement, and/or facilitate participatory forums. the rapid growth and proliferation of participatory arrangements call for expertise in the organizing of public participation. the contributors analyze the professionalization of this practice in different countries (united states, france, canada, italy, and the united kingdom) to see how their actions challenge the development of participatory arrangements. designing such processes is a delicate activity, since it may affect not only the quality of the processes and their legitimacy, but also their capacity to influence decision-making.

Description : Read Now Public Participation Science And Society by Mikko Rask and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the field of public participation is developing fast, with phenomena such as citizen science and crowdsourcing extending the resource base of research, stimulating innovation and making science more accessible to the general population. promoting public participation means giving more weight to citizens and civil society actors in the definition of research needs and in the implementation of research and innovation. as yet, there is limited understanding of the implications of widespread use of public participation and as a result, there is a risk that it will become a burden for research and an obstacle to bridging the gap between research and society. this volume presents the findings of a three-year international study on innovative public participation. the resulting work studies the characteristics and trends of innovative public participation through a global sample of 38 case studies. it provides theoretical generalisations on the dynamics of public participation, suggestions for an evaluation framework and clear empirical examples of how public participation works in practice. illustrated by best practice cases, the authors identify characteristics which contribute to successful public participation. the book is aimed primarily at scholars and practitioners of public participation, as well as research managers, policy makers and business actors interested in related issues. there is also a secondary market for students and scholars of european governance studies, sociology and political sciences.

Description : Read Now Digital Technologies For Democratic Governance In Latin America by Anita Breuer and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book is the first to comprehensively analyse the political and societal impacts of new information and communication technologies (ict) in a region of the global south. it evaluates under what conditions some latin american governments and people have succeeded in taking up the opportunities related to the spread of icts, while others are confronted with the pessimist scenario of increased, digitally induced social and democratic cleavages. specifically, the book examines if and how far the spread and use of new ict affected central aims of democratic governance such as reducing socio-economic and gender inequality; strengthening citizen participation in political decision making; increasing the transparency of legislative processes; improving administrative processes; providing free access to government data and information; and expanding independent spaces of citizen communication. the country case and cross-country explore a range of bottom-up driven initiatives to reinforce democracy in the region. the book offers researchers and students an interdisciplinary approach to these issues by linking it to established theories of media and politics, political communication, political participation, and governance. giving voice to researchers native to the region and with direct experience of the region, it uniquely brings together contributions from political scientists, researchers in communication studies and area studies specialists who have a solid record in political activism and international development co-operation.
