Description : Read Now Rereading The Black Legend by Margaret R. Greer and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the phrase “the black legend” was coined in 1912 by a spanish journalist in protest of the characterization of spain by other europeans as a backward country defined by ignorance, superstition, and religious fanaticism, whose history could never recover from the black mark of its violent conquest of the americas. challenging this stereotype, rereading the black legend contextualizes spain’s uniquely tarnished reputation by exposing the colonial efforts of other nations whose interests were served by propagating the “black legend.” a distinguished group of contributors here examine early modern imperialisms including the ottomans in eastern europe, the portuguese in east india, and the cases of mughal india and china, to historicize the charge of unique spanish brutality in encounters with indigenous peoples during the age of exploration. the geographic reach and linguistic breadth of this ambitious collection will make it a valuable resource for any discussion of race, national identity, and religious belief in the european renaissance.

Description : Read Now English Renaissance Drama And The Specter Of Spain by Eric J. Griffin and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the specter of spain rarely figures in our discussions of the drama that is often regarded as the crowning achievement of the english literary renaissance. yet dramatists such as thomas kyd, christopher marlowe, and william shakespeare are exactly contemporary with england's protracted conflict with the spanish empire, a traditional ally turned archetypical adversary. were these playwrights really so mute with respect to their nation's spanish troubles? or have we failed—for reasons cultural and institutional—to hear the hispanophobic crosstalk that permeated the drama no less than england's other public discourses? imagining an early modern public sphere in which dramatists cross pens with proto-imperialists, protestant polemicists, recusant apologists, and a machiavellian network of propagandists that included high government officials as well as journeyman printers, eric griffin uncovers the rhetorical strategies through which the hispanophobic perspectives that shaped the so-called black legend of spanish cruelty were written into english cultural memory. at the same time, he demonstrates that the english were as ready to invoke spain in the spirit of envious emulation as to demonize the spanish other as an ethnic agent of intolerance and oppression. interrogating the whiggish orientation that has continued to view the english renaissance through a haze of anglo-american triumphalism, english renaissance drama and the specter of spain recovers the voices of key spanish participants and the "hispanized" catholic resistance, revealing how england and spain continued to draw upon shared traditions and cultural resources, even during the moments of their most storied confrontation.

Description : Read Now The Lima Inquisition by Ana E. Schaposchnik and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the holy office of the inquisition (a royal tribunal that addressed issues of heresy and offenses to morality) was established in peru in 1570 and operated there until 1820. in this book, ana e. schaposchnik provides a deeply researched history of the inquisition’s lima tribunal, focusing in particular on the cases of persons put under trial for crypto-judaism in lima during the 1600s. delving deeply into the records of the lima tribunal, schaposchnik brings to light the experiences and perspectives of the prisoners in the cells and torture chambers, as well as the regulations and institutional procedures of the inquisitors. she looks closely at how the lives of the accused—and in some cases the circumstances of their deaths—were shaped by actions of the inquisition on both sides of the atlantic. she explores the prisoners’ lives before and after their incarcerations and reveals the variety and character of prisoners’ religiosity, as portrayed in the inquisition’s own sources. she also uncovers individual and collective strategies of the prisoners and their supporters to stall trials, confuse tribunal members, and attempt to ameliorate or at least delay the most extreme effects of the trial of faith. the lima inquisition also includes a detailed analysis of the 1639 auto general de fe ceremony of public penance and execution, tracing the agendas of individual inquisitors, the transition that occurred when punishment and surveillance were brought out of hidden dungeons and into public spaces, and the exposure of the condemned and their plight to an avid and awestricken audience. schaposchnik contends that the lima tribunal’s goal, more than volume or frequency in punishing heretics, was to discipline and shape culture in peru.

Description : Read Now Empires Of God by Linda Gregerson and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. religion and empire were inseparable forces in the early modern atlantic world. religious passions and conflicts drove much of the expansionist energy of post-reformation europe, providing both a rationale and a practical mode of organizing the dispersal and resettlement of hundreds of thousands of people from the old world to the new world. exhortations to conquer new peoples were the lingua franca of western imperialism, and men like the mystically inclined christopher columbus were genuinely inspired to risk their lives and their fortunes to bring the gospel to the americas. and in the thousands of religious refugees seeking asylum from the vicious wars of religion that tore the continent apart in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, these visionary explorers found a ready pool of migrants—english puritans and quakers, french huguenots, german moravians, scots-irish presbyterians—equally willing to risk life and limb for a chance to worship god in their own way. focusing on the formative period of european exploration, settlement, and conquest in the americas, from roughly 1500 to 1760, empires of god brings together historians and literary scholars of the english, french, and spanish americas around a common set of questions: how did religious communities and beliefs create empires, and how did imperial structures transform new world religions? how did europeans and native americans make sense of each other's spiritual systems, and what acts of linguistic and cultural transition did this entail? what was the role of violence in new world religious encounters? together, the essays collected here demonstrate the power of religious ideas and narratives to create kingdoms both imagined and real.

Description : Read Now Exotic Nation by Barbara Fuchs and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in the western imagination, spain often evokes the colorful culture of al-andalus, the iberian region once ruled by muslims. tourist brochures inviting visitors to sunny and romantic andalusia, home of the ingenious gardens and intricate arabesques of granada's alhambra palace, are not the first texts to trade on spain's relationship to its moorish past. despite the fall of granada to the catholic monarchs in 1492 and the subsequent repression of islam in spain, moorish civilization continued to influence both the reality and the perception of the christian nation that emerged in place of al-andalus. in exotic nation, barbara fuchs explores the paradoxes in the cultural construction of spain in relation to its moorish heritage through an analysis of spanish literature, costume, language, architecture, and chivalric practices. between 1492 and the expulsion of the moriscos (muslims forcibly converted to christianity) in 1609, spain attempted to come to terms with its own moorishness by simultaneously repressing muslim subjects and appropriating their rich cultural heritage. fuchs examines the explicit romanticization of the moors in spanish literature—often referred to as "literary maurophilia"—and the complex, often silent presence of moorish forms in spanish material culture. the extensive hybridization of iberian culture suggests that the sympathetic depiction of moors in the literature of the period does not trade in exoticism but instead reminded spaniards of the place of moors and their descendants within spain. meanwhile, observers from outside spain recognized its cultural debt to al-andalus, often deliberately casting spain as the exotic racial other of europe.

Description : Read Now Masculinity And The Other by Heather Ellis and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. histories of masculinity have generally examined both social ideologies of masculinity and subjective male identities within frameworks that define them against the feminine. yet historians and sociologists have increasingly argued that men have been and continue to be defined both socially and subjectively as much by their relations to other men as in relation to women. this collection brings together the work of scholars of masculinities working in a variety of fields, including literature, history and art history, to examine some of the forms of 'otherness' against which ideas of masculinity have been defined throughout history. the collection reflects the current breadth of scholarship relating to the study of masculine alterity. while the subjects addressed are largely historical, the time span covered is broad and the disciplinary approaches to the subject matter are equally wide-ranging. a huge variety of men, masculine behaviours and definitions of masculinity are considered in an exciting and invigorating collection that showcases both established academics and emerging scholars in the field.
