Description : Read Now Life And Death Matters by Barbara Rose Johnston and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the first edition of life and death matters was a breakthrough text, centralizing the experiences of those on the front lines of environmental crises and forging new paradigms for understanding how crises emerge and how different groups of actors respond to them. this second edition, fully updated with both expanded and new chapters, once again provides a benchmark for the field and opens important pathways for further research. authors reassess the state of scholarship and grassroots activism in a new century when social and environmental systems are being reconceptualised within post-9/11 security and biosecurity frameworks, when global warming and resource scarcity are not fears but realities, when global power and politics are being realigned, and when ecocide, ethnocide, and genocide are daily tragedies. this bold new edition of life and death matters will be a widely used textbook and essential reading for students, scholars, and policy makers.

Description : Read Now Community Rights Conservation And Contested Land by Fred Nelson and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. natural resource governance is central to the outcomes of biodiversity conservation efforts and to patterns of economic development, particularly in resource-dependent rural communities. the institutional arrangements that define natural resource governance are outcomes of political processes, whereby numerous groups with often-divergent interests negotiate for access to and control over resources. these political processes determine the outcomes of resource governance reform efforts, such as widespread attempts to decentralize or devolve greater tenure over land and resources to local communities. this volume examines the political dynamics of natural resource governance processes through a range of comparative case studies across east and southern africa. these cases include both local and national settings, and examine issues such as land rights, tourism development, wildlife conservation, participatory forest management, and the impacts of climate change, and are drawn from both academics and field practitioners working across the region. published with iucn, the bradley fund for the environment, sasusg and norwegian ministry of foreign affairs

"many of the irrigation systems in eastern europe and the former soviet union have been shut down because of problems related to organizational requirements, the supply of energy, land ownership, profitability, cost, agricultural marketing problems, and external and internal strife." improving the relative inefficiency of agriculture and protection of the natural environment are two of the most important challenges facing the countries of the commonwealth of independent states and central and eastern europe. this volume documents the development experience in rural, natural resources and environment projects, and research and technical assistance activities in the eastern europe and central asia region. this experience has varied widely between sectors and between countries. however, certain lessons learned should inform future activities in the same sectors. some of the most important findings for these economies include the importance of institutional capacity to sustain reforms, the value of facilitating local participation to increase the sustainability of development programs, and the requirements for fostering a dialog between stakeholders, including the private sector.

Description : Read Now Women Land Rights And Rural Development by Esther Kingston-Mann and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the failure to include gender in the economic history of rural development has severely limited our understanding of privatizing, collectivist and colonial economic policies that disrupted and transformed the lives of rural women and men in the modern world. this book is unique in its focus on female economic agency, and in its exploration of the latter virtue in comparative historical perspective. it presents the apparently disparate cases of 17th-century england, 20th-century russia and the soviet union, and 20th-century kenya, as their top-down modernization projects were implemented in similar fashion --particularly in the case of women. the female half of the population was largely absent from contemporary economic databases, but nevertheless stereotyped as obstacles to rational economic decision-making. introducing rural women and their innovations into male-centered narratives of economic history lays the foundation for a more demographically balanced and realistic understanding of rural behavior and rural development. in this study, women’s labor and land claims are the lens through which both female agency and the delegitimizing of women’s land claims become more visible. both policy-makers and their leading critics deployed virtually identical language to describe backward, unruly and invariably “unsightly” peasant women.

Description : Read Now An Introduction To Sustainable Development by Jennifer Elliott and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this fourth edition has been comprehensively rewritten and updated to provide a concise, well illustrated and accessible introduction to the characteristics, challenges and opportunities of sustainable development with particular reference to developing countries. the contested nature of sustainable development is explored through a detailed consideration of changing ideas and practices within environmentalism and development thinking. the text identifies the different actors involved (from institutions of global governance through to community based organisations), the policies and mechanisms through which sustainable development is being sought and considers the outcomes for particular groups and environments in both rural and urban contexts. this edition places stronger emphasis on the global challenges of sustainable development with an understanding of inter-linked crises in climate, energy, economy, poverty and social injustice. it explores how these issues are leading to deep questioning of what sustainable development is, what it should be, and how sustainable development policies and mechanisms are being reconsidered. the book gives new consideration to the challenge of achieving lower carbon growth, climate adaptation, and the implications on sustainable development of rapidly expanding economies, including china and india. it contains greater discussion of how civil society movements influence outcomes of international climate policy, as well as technological developments in energy and agriculture. the text also contains a substantially expanded discussion of how poverty remains central to sustainable development challenges, as revealed through the millennium ecosystem assessment and millennium development goals. this invaluable text retains the core message that sustainable development has become central to debates about environment and development. containing a substantial number of new boxed case studies, learning outcomes, chapter summaries, discussion questions, further reading and websites, this text provides an essential introduction for students.
