Description : Read Now One Universe by Charles Tsun-Chu Liu, Neil de Grasse Tyson, Robert Irion and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. a new window opens onto the cosmos... almost every day we are challenged by new information from the outermost reaches of space. using straightforward language, one universe explores the physical principles that govern the workings of our own world so that we can appreciate how they operate in the cosmos around us. bands of color in a sunlit crystal and the spectrum of starlight in giant telescopes, the arc of a hard-hit baseball and the orbit of the moon, traffic patterns on a freeway and the spiral arms in a galaxy full of stars--they're all tied together in grand and simple ways. we can understand the vast cosmos in which we live by exploring three basic concepts: motion, matter, and energy. with these as a starting point, one universe shows how the physical principles that operate in our kitchens and backyards are actually down-to-earth versions of cosmic processes. the book then takes us to the limits of our knowledge, asking the ultimate questions about the origins and existence of life as we know it and where the universe came from--and where it is going. glorious photographs--many seen for the first time in these pages--and original illustrations expand and enrich our understanding. evocative and clearly written, one universe explains complex ideas in ways that every reader can grasp and enjoy. this book captures the grandeur of the heavens while making us feel at home in the cosmos. above all, it helps us realize that galaxies, stars, planets, and we ourselves all belong to one universe.

Description : Read Now Science Fiction Film by J. P. Telotte and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. science fiction film examines one of the most enduring and popular genres of hollywood cinema, suggesting how the science fiction film reflects attitudes toward science, technology, and reason as they have evolved in american culture over the course of the twentieth century. j. p. telotte provides a survey of science fiction film criticism, emphasizing humanist, psychological, ideological, feminist, and postmodern critiques. he also sketches a history of the genre, from its earliest literary manifestations to the present, while touching on and comparing it to pulp fiction, early television science fiction, and japanese anim. telotte offers in-depth readings of three key films: robocop, close encounters of the third kind, and thx 1138, each of which typifies a particular form of science fiction fantasy. challenging the boundaries usually seen between high and low culture, literature and film, science fiction film reasserts the central role of fantasy in popular films, even those concerned with reason, science, and technology.

Description : Read Now 1950s Science Fiction Films And 9 11 by Melvin E. Matthews and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. 1950s cold war-era monsters meet 21st century terrorists: this exploration of sci-fi movies examines the similarities and differences between the political environment and popular culture of two eras. this examination and appreciation of 1950s science fiction films includes behind-the-scenes tales about their production and many quotes from those who produced and starred in the films. the author draws parallels between the cold war fears of the 1950s and 60s and the constant "terrorism alerts" of the september 11th era, exploring how the politics and the psychological climate of the times influences and is reflected in this vehicle of popular culture. this book is the first of its kind, studying the pop culture genre in the wake of the september 11th tragedy. it shows that, whatever the era and whatever the challenges and crises confronting america, many entertainment themes remain the same, reflecting their respective times and the relevant issues. for instance, godzilla, the only fifties-era monster to remain a "movie star" beyond that era, could be fashioned to reflect whatever issues dominate the times, be they nuclear war in the fifties when godzilla originated to a seventies godzilla film about environmental pollution. conceivably a godzilla for the age of terrorism is possible. "them"! the 1954 atomic mutation classic, is the spiritual ancestor of the 2002 film "eight legged freaks." the alien invaders of the fifties signified a russian invasion of america, while other films of the genre, such as "invaders from mars," depicted aliens utilizing mind control to manipulate humans to commit acts of sabotage, signifying communist enslavement. if such a film were made now, such invaders could be seen as terrorist masterminds using human slaves to commit terrorist acts. finally, several fifties films depicted the end of the world at a time when americans expected a nuclear war with russia. the immediate pre-september 11th era witnessed films presenting galactic threats to mankind's existence ("independence day," "deep impact," "armageddon"), while the early 2000s witnessed the popularity of the "left behind" christian films dramatizing the tribulation period in the book of revelation.

Description : Read Now Films Of Fact by Tim Boon, Paul Rotha and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. britain has long been recognised for its proud contribution to documentary cinema, yet its long tradition of scientific and medical documentaries remains underrepresented in the literature on nonfiction film. films of fact is the first in-depth history of the genre, which began with amateur hobbyists in the early twentieth century, played a key role in government post-war health programmes, and became a treasured part of popular culture with bbc2's horizon and the programming of channel 4. central to the narrative is paul rotha, a pioneering advocate of science broadcasting of the post-war period, and a figure second only to john grierson in british documentary history, who helped nurture the collaborative ethos and practices that make scientific and medical documentaries a unique subgenre of documentary cinema. written by a specialist scientific scholar, films of fact is a landmark text on a crucial yet rarely discussed aspect of british popular culture. discussed are films such as world of plenty (1943) and land of promise (1945), and television programmes such as horizon (1964 onwards) and crucible: science and society (1982).
