Description : Read Now Sense And Nonsense by Kevin N. Laland and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. evolutionary theory is one of the most wide-ranging and inspiring of scientific ideas. it offers a battery of methods that can be used to help us understand human behavior. nevertheless, the legitimacy of this exercise is at the center of a heated controversy that has raged for over a century. many evolutionary biologists, anthropologists and psychologists have taken these evolutionary principles and tried using them to explain a wide range of human characteristics, such as homicide, religion and sex differences in behavior. others, however, are sceptical of these interpretations. moreover, researchers disagree as to the best ways to use evolution to explore humanity, and a number of schools have emerged. 'sense and nonsense' provides an introduction to the ideas, methods, and findings of five such schools, namely, sociobiology, human behavioural ecology, evolutionary psychology, memetics, and gene-culture co-evolution. carefully guiding the reader through the mire of confusing terminology, claim and counter-claim, and polemical statements, laland and brown provide a balanced, rigorous analysis that scrutinizes both the evolutionary arguments and the allegations of the critics. this is a book that will be make fascinating reading for popular science readers, undergraduate and postgraduate students (for example, in psychology, anthropology and zoology), and to experts on one approach who would like to know more about the other perspectives. having completed this book the reader will feel better placed to assess the legitimacy of claims made about human behavior under the name of evolution, and to make judgements as to what is sense and what is nonsense.

Description : Read Now Human Evolutionary Psychology by Louise Barrett and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. why do people resort to plastic surgery to look young? why are stepchildren at greatest risk of fatal abuse? why do we prefer gossip to algebra? why must dogon wives live alone in a dark hut for five days a month? why are young children good at learning language but not sharing? over the past decade, psychologists and behavioral ecologists have been finding answers to such seemingly unrelated questions by applying an evolutionary perspective to the study of human behavior and psychology. human evolutionary psychology is a comprehensive, balanced, and readable introduction to this burgeoning field. it combines a sophisticated understanding of the basics of evolutionary theory with a solid grasp of empirical case studies. covering not only such traditional subjects as kin selection and mate choice, this text also examines more complex understandings of marriage practices and inheritance rules and the way in which individual action influences the structure of societies and aspects of cultural evolution. it critically assesses the value of evolutionary explanations to humans in both modern western society and traditional preindustrial societies. and it fairly presents debates within the field, identifying areas of compatibility among sometimes competing approaches. combining a broad scope with the more in-depth knowledge and sophisticated understanding needed to approach the primary literature, this text is the ideal introduction to the exciting and rapidly expanding study of human evolutionary psychology.

Description : Read Now Darwin S Unfinished Symphony by Kevin N. Laland and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. humans possess an extraordinary capacity for culture, from the arts and language to science and technology. but how did the human mind--and the uniquely human ability to devise and transmit culture--evolve from its roots in animal behavior? darwin's unfinished symphony presents a captivating new theory of human cognitive evolution. this compelling and accessible book reveals how culture is not just the magnificent end product of an evolutionary process that produced a species unlike all others--it is also the key driving force behind that process. kevin laland tells the story of the painstaking fieldwork, the key experiments, the false leads, and the stunning scientific breakthroughs that led to this new understanding of how culture transformed human evolution. it is the story of how darwin's intellectual descendants picked up where he left off and took up the challenge of providing a scientific account of the evolution of the human mind.

Description : Read Now Adapting Minds by David J. Buller and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. was human nature designed by natural selection in the pleistocene epoch? the dominant view in evolutionary psychology holds that it was—that our psychological adaptations were designed tens of thousands of years ago to solve problems faced by our hunter-gatherer ancestors. in this provocative and lively book, david buller examines in detail the major claims of evolutionary psychology—the paradigm popularized by steven pinker in the blank slate and by david buss in the evolution of desire—and rejects them all. this does not mean that we cannot apply evolutionary theory to human psychology, says buller, but that the conventional wisdom in evolutionary psychology is misguided. evolutionary psychology employs a kind of reverse engineering to explain the evolved design of the mind, figuring out the adaptive problems our ancestors faced and then inferring the psychological adaptations that evolved to solve them. in the carefully argued central chapters of adapting minds, buller scrutinizes several of evolutionary psychology's most highly publicized "discoveries," including "discriminative parental solicitude" (the idea that stepparents abuse their stepchildren at a higher rate than genetic parents abuse their biological children). drawing on a wide range of empirical research, including his own large-scale study of child abuse, he shows that none is actually supported by the evidence. buller argues that our minds are not adapted to the pleistocene, but, like the immune system, are continually adapting, over both evolutionary time and individual lifetimes. we must move beyond the reigning orthodoxy of evolutionary psychology to reach an accurate understanding of how human psychology is influenced by evolution. when we do, buller claims, we will abandon not only the quest for human nature but the very idea of human nature itself.
