"holy men despise women...and view them as foul and sticking dirt in the road," asserst the male author of the fifteenth-century book to a mother. middle english devotional writings reflect shades of mysogony ranging from the blatant to the subtle, yet these texts were among the most popular literature know to the earliest generation of english women readers. in the first book to examine this paradox, anne clark bartlett considers why medieval women enjoyed such male-authored works as speculum devotorum, the tree, the twelve fruits of the holy ghost, and contemplations on the dread and love of god. demonstrating that these texts actually provided alternative—and more appealing—notions of gender than those authorized by the church, bartlett redefines women's participation in medieval culture in terms of far greater agency and empowerment than have generally been acknowledged.

Description : Read Now Yeats S Legacies by Warwick Gould and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the two great yeats family sales of 2017 and the legacy of the yeats family’s 80-year tradition of generosity to ireland’s great cultural institutions provide the kaleidoscope through which these advanced research essays find their theme. hannah sullivan’s brilliant history of yeats’s versecraft challenges poundian definitions of modernism; denis donoghue offers unique family memories of 1916 whilst tracing the political significance of the easter rising; anita feldman addresses yeats’s responses to the rising’s appropriation of his symbols and myths, the daring artistry of his ritual drama developed from noh, his poetry of personal utterance, and his vision of art as a body reborn rather than a treasure preserved amid the testing of the illusions that hold civilizations together in ensuing wars. warwick gould looks at yeats as founding senator in the new free state, and his valiant struggle against the literary censorship law of 1929 (with its present-day legacy of irish anti-blasphemy law still presenting a constitutional challenge). drawing on gregory estate documents, james pethica looks at the evictions which preceded yeats’s purchase of thoor ballylee in galway; lauren arrington looks back at yeats, ezra pound, and the ghosts of the winding stair (1929) in rapallo. having co-edited both versions of a vision, catherine paul offers some profound reflections on ‘yeats and belief’. grevel lindop provides a pioneering view of yeats’s impact on english mystical verse and on charles williams who, while at oxford university press, helped publish the oxford book of modern verse. stanley van der ziel looks at the presence of shakespeare in yeats’s purgatory. william h. o’donnell examines the vexed textual legacy of his late work, on the boiler while gould considers the challenge yeats’s intentionalism posed for once-fashionable post-structuralist editorial theory. john kelly recovers a startling autobiographical short story by maud gonne. while nine works of current biographical, textual and literary scholarship are reviewed, maud gonne is the focus of debate for two reviewers, as are eva gore-booth, constance and casimir markievicz, rudyard kipling, david jones, t. s. eliot and his presence on the radio.

Description : Read Now Ovidian Bibliofictions And The Tudor Book by Dr Lindsay Ann Reid and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. ovidian bibliofictions and the tudor book examines the historical and the fictionalized reception of ovid’s poetry in the literature and books of tudor england. it does so through the study of a particular set of ovidian narratives-namely, those concerning the protean heroines of the heroides and metamorphoses. in the late medieval and renaissance eras, ovid’s poetry stimulated the vernacular imaginations of authors ranging from geoffrey chaucer and john gower to isabella whitney, william shakespeare, and michael drayton. ovid’s english protégés replicated and expanded upon the roman poet’s distinctive and frequently remarked ‘bookishness’ in their own adaptations of his works. focusing on the postclassical discourses that ovid’s poetry stimulated, ovidian bibliofictions and the tudor book engages with vibrant current debates about the book as material object as it explores the ovidian-inspired mythologies and bibliographical aetiologies that informed the sixteenth-century creation, reproduction, and representation of books. further, author lindsay ann reid’s discussions of ovidianism provide alternative models for thinking about the dynamics of reception, adaptation, and imitatio. while there is a sizeable body of published work on ovid and chaucer as well as on the ubiquitous ovidianism of the 1590s, there has been comparatively little scholarship on ovid’s reception between these two eras. ovidian bibliofictions and the tudor book begins to fill this gap between the ages of chaucer and shakespeare by dedicating attention to the literature of the early tudor era. in so doing, this book also contributes to current discussions surrounding medieval/renaissance periodization.

Description : Read Now Joyce S Creative Process And The Construction Of Characters In Ulysses by Luca Crispi and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this book is both a study of how james joyce created two of the most iconic characters in literature--leopold bloom and marion tweedy bloom--as well as a history of the genesis of ulysses. from a genetic critical perspective, it explores the conception and evolution of the blooms as fictional characters in the work's wide range of surviving notes and manuscripts. at the same time, it also chronicles the production of ulysses from 1917 to its first edition in 1922 and beyond. based on decades of research, it is an original engagement with the textual archive of ulysses, including the exciting, recently-discovered manuscripts now in the national library of ireland. luca crispi excavates the raw material and examines the creative processes joyce deployed in the construction of the blooms and so the writing of ulysses. framed by a contextual introduction and four bibliographical appendices, the seven main chapters are a critical investigation of the fictional events and memories that constitute the "lives" of the blooms. thereby, it is also a commentary on joyce's conception of ulysses more generally. crispi analyzes how the stories in the published book achieved their final form and discloses previously unexamined versions of them for everyone who enjoys reading ulysses. this book demonstrates the various ways in which specialist textual work on the genesis of ulysses directly intersects with other critical and interpretive readings. joyce's creative process is a behind-the-scenes guide to the creation of one of the most important books ever written.

Description : Read Now Feeling Like Saints by Fiona Somerset and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. "lollard" is the name given to followers of john wyclif, the english dissident theologian who was dismissed from oxford university in 1381 for his arguments regarding the eucharist. a forceful and influential critic of the ecclesiastical status quo in the late fourteenth century, wyclif’s thought was condemned at the council of constance in 1415. while lollardy has attracted much attention in recent years, much of what we think we know about this english religious movement is based on records of heresy trials and anti-lollard chroniclers. in feeling like saints, fiona somerset demonstrates that this approach has limitations. a better basis is the five hundred or so manuscript books from the period (1375–1530) containing materials translated, composed, or adapted by lollard writers themselves. these writings provide rich evidence for how lollard writers collaborated with one another and with their readers to produce a distinctive religious identity based around structures of feeling. lollards wanted to feel like saints. from wyclif they drew an extraordinarily rigorous ethic of mutual responsibility that disregarded both social status and personal risk. they recalled their commitment to this ethic by reading narratives of physical suffering and vindication, metaphorically martyring themselves by inviting scorn for their zeal, and enclosing themselves in the virtues rather than the religious cloister. yet in many ways they were not that different from their contemporaries, especially those with similar impulses to exceptional holiness.

Description : Read Now Editing And Interpretation Of Middle English Texts by Margaret Connolly and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. these fifteen essays, all published here for the first time, explore issues related to the editing and interpretation of middle english literature. these include the treatment of all types of evidence (variant readings; punctuation; capitalization; rubrication; physical layout), in relation to both manuscript transmission and the transition from manuscript to print. the editorial representation of these and other aspects constitutes an act of textual interpretation at the most fundamental level, which subsequently influences scholarly understanding. two major fields of writing, religious texts and chronicles, provide the focus of this enquiry. major works that receive attention include trevisa's translation of the polychronicon, the middle english brut, piers plowman, love's mirror of the blessed life of jesus christ, and mirk's festial; a wide range of shorter devotional and historical texts, in both verse and prose, is also considered, as are aspects related to the translation of texts into middle english. almost all of the contributors are experienced editors of medieval texts. some contribute further insights about texts they have edited, whilst others offer new editions of previously unpublished works. collectively these essays foreground the many and varied matters of interpretation that confront the editor of middle english texts.
