Description : Read Now The Silk Road In World History by Xinru Liu and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the silk road was the contemporary name for a complex of ancient trade routes linking east asia with central asia, south asia, and the mediterranean world. this network of exchange emerged along the borders between agricultural china and the steppe nomads during the han dynasty (206bce-220ce), in consequence of the inter-dependence and the conflicts of these two distinctive societies. in their quest for horses, fragrances, spices, gems, glassware, and other exotics from the lands to their west, the han empire extended its dominion over the oases around the takla makan desert and sent silk all the way to the mediterranean, either through the land routes leading to the caravan city of palmyra in syria desert, or by way of northwest india, the arabian sea and the red sea, landing at alexandria. the silk road survived the turmoil of the demise of the han and roman empires, reached its golden age during the early middle age, when the byzantine empire and the tang empire became centers of silk culture and established the models for high culture of the eurasian world. the coming of islam extended silk culture to an even larger area and paved the way for an expanded market for textiles and other commodities. by the 11th century, however, the silk road was in decline because of intense competition from the sea routes of the indian ocean. using supply and demand as the framework for analyzing the formation and development of the silk road, the book examines the dynamics of the interactions of the nomadic pastoralists with sedentary agriculturalists, and the spread of new ideas, religions, and values into the world of commerce, thus illustrating the cultural forces underlying material transactions. this effort at tracing the interconnections of the diverse participants in the transcontinental silk road exchange will demonstrate that the world had been linked through economic and ideological forces long before the modern era.

Miksic and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. beneath the modern skyscrapers of singapore lie the remains of a much older trading port, prosperous and cosmopolitan and a key node in the maritime silk road. this book synthesizes 25 years of archaeological research to reconstruct the 14th-century port of singapore in greater detail than is possible for any other early southeast asian city. the picture that emerges is of a port where people processed raw materials, used money, and had specialized occupations. within its defensive wall, the city was well organized and prosperous, with a cosmopolitan population that included residents from china, other parts of southeast asia, and the indian ocean. fully illustrated, with more than 300 maps and colour photos, singapore and the silk road of the sea presents singapore's history in the context of asia's long-distance maritime trade in the years between 1300 and 1800: it amounts to a dramatic new understanding of singapore's pre-colonial past.

Description : Read Now The Silk Road by Kathryn Davis and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. a spellbinding novel about transience and mortality, by one of the most original voices in american literature the silk road begins on a mat in yoga class, deep within a labyrinth on a settlement somewhere in the icy north, under the canny guidance of jee moon. when someone fails to arise from corpse pose, the astronomer, the archivist, the botanist, the keeper, the topologist, the geographer, the iceman, and the cook remember the paths that brought them there—paths on which they still seem to be traveling. the silk road also begins in rivalrous skirmishing for favor, in the protected eden of childhood, and it ends in the harrowing democracy of mortality, in sickness and loss and death. kathryn davis’s sleight of hand brings the past, present, and future forward into brilliant coexistence; in an endlessly shifting landscape, her characters make their way through ruptures, grief, and apocalypse, from existence to nonexistence, from embodiment to pure spirit. since the beginning of her extraordinary career, davis has been fascinated by journeys. her books have been shaped around road trips, walking tours, hegiras, exiles: and now, in this triumphant novel, a pilgrimage. the silk road is her most explicitly allegorical novel and also her most profound vehicle; supple and mesmerizing, the journey here is not undertaken by a single protagonist but by a community of separate souls—a family, a yoga class, a generation. its revelations are ravishing and desolating.

Description : Read Now The Silk Road by Valerie Hansen and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the silk road is as iconic in world history as the colossus of rhodes or the suez canal. but what was it, exactly? it conjures up a hazy image of a caravan of camels laden with silk on a dusty desert track, reaching from china to rome. the reality was different--and far more interesting--as revealed in this new history. in the silk road, valerie hansen describes the remarkable archeological finds that revolutionize our understanding of these trade routes. for centuries, key records remained hidden--sometimes deliberately buried by bureaucrats for safe keeping. but the sands of the taklamakan desert have revealed fascinating material, sometimes preserved by illiterate locals who recycled official documents to make insoles for shoes or garments for the dead. hansen explores seven oases along the road, from xi'an to samarkand, where merchants, envoys, pilgrims, and travelers mixed in cosmopolitan communities, tolerant of religions from buddhism to zoroastrianism. there was no single, continuous road, but a chain of markets that traded between east and west. china and the roman empire had very little direct trade. china's main partners were the peoples of modern-day iran, whose tombs in china reveal much about their zoroastrian beliefs. silk was not the most important good on the road; paper, invented in china before julius caesar was born, had a bigger impact in europe, while metals, spices, and glass were just as important as silk. perhaps most significant of all was the road's transmission of ideas, technologies, and artistic motifs. the silk road is a fascinating story of archeological discovery, cultural transmission, and the intricate chains across central asia and china.
