Description : Read Now Stagestruck Filmmaker by David Mayer and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. an actor, a vaudevillian, and a dramatist before he became a filmmaker, d. w. griffith used the resources of theatre to great purpose and to great ends. in pioneering the quintessentially modern medium of film from the 1890s to the 1930s, he drew from older, more broadly appealing stage forms of melodrama, comedy, vaudeville, and variety. in stagestruck filmmaker, david mayer brings griffith’s process vividly to life, offering detailed and valuable insights into the racial, ethnic, class, and gender issues of these transitional decades. combining the raw materials of theatre, circus, minstrelsy, and dance with the newer visual codes of motion pictures, griffith became the first acknowledged artist of american film. birth of a nation in particular demonstrates the degree to which he was influenced by the racist justifications and distorting interpretations of the civil war and the reconstruction era. moving through the major phases of griffith’s career in chapters organized around key films or groups of films, mayer provides a mesmerizing account of the american stage and cinema in the final years of the nineteenth century and the first three decades of the twentieth century. griffith’s relationship to the theatre was intricate, complex, and enduring. long recognized as the dominant creative figure of american motion pictures, throughout twenty-six years of making more than five hundred films he pillaged, adapted, reshaped, revitalized, preserved, and extolled. by historicizing his representations of race, ethnicity, and otherness, mayer places griffith within an overall template of american life in the years when film rivaled and then surpassed the theatre in popularity.

Description : Read Now Electric Dreamland by Lauren Rabinovitz and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. more than two thousand amusement parks dotted the american landscape in the early twentieth century, thrilling the general public with the latest in entertainment and motion picture technology. amusement parks were the playgrounds of the working class, combining numerous, mechanically-based spectacles into one unique, modern cultural phenomenon. lauren rabinovitz describes the urban modernity engendered by these parks and their media, encouraging ordinary individuals to sense, interpret, and embody a burgeoning national identity. as industrialization, urbanization, and immigration upended society before world war i, amusement parks tempered the shocks of racial, ethnic, and cultural conflict while shrinking the distinctions between gender and class. as she follows the rise of american parks from 1896 to 1918, rabinovitz seizes on a simultaneous increase in cinema and spectacle audiences and connects both to the success of leisure activities in stabilizing society.

Shepherd and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. between the advent of motion pictures in the 1890s and the close of the 'silent' era at the end of the 1920s, many of the longest, most expensive and most watched films on both sides of the atlantic drew upon biblical traditions. david j. shepherd traces the evolution of the biblical film through the silent era, asking why the bible attracted early film makers, how biblical films were indebted to other interpretive traditions, and how these films were received. drawing upon rarely seen archival footage and early landmark films of directors such as louis feuillade, d. w. griffith, michael curtis and cecil b. demille, this history treats well-known biblical subjects including joseph, moses, david and jesus, along with lesser-known biblical stars such as jael, judith and jephthah's daughter. this book will be of great interest to students of biblical studies, jewish studies and film studies.

Description : Read Now Disappearing Tricks by Matthew Solomon and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. disappearing tricks revisits the golden age of theatrical magic and silent film to reveal how professional magicians shaped the early history of cinema. where others have called upon magic as merely an evocative metaphor for the wonders of cinema, matthew solomon focuses on the work of the professional illusionists who actually made magic with moving pictures between 1895 and 1929. the first to reveal fully how powerfully magic impacted the development of cinema, the book combines film and theater history to uncover new evidence of the exchanges between magic and filmmaking in the united states and france during the silent period. chapters detailing the stage and screen work of harry houdini and georges méliès show how each transformed theatrical magic to create innovative cinematic effects and thrilling new exploits for twentieth-century mass audiences. the book also considers the previously overlooked roles of anti-spiritualism and presentational performance in silent film. highlighting early cinema's relationship to the performing body, visual deception, storytelling, and the occult, solomon treats cinema and stage magic as overlapping practices that together revise our understanding of the origins of motion pictures and cinematic spectacle.

Description : Read Now Music For The Melodramatic Theatre In Nineteenth Century London And New York by Michael V. Pisani and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. throughout the nineteenth century, people heard more music in the theatre—accompanying popular dramas such as frankenstein, oliver twist, uncle tom’s cabin, lady audley’s secret, the corsican brothers, the three musketeers, as well as historical romances by shakespeare and schiller—than they did in almost any other area of their lives. but unlike film music, theatrical music has received very little attention from scholars and so it has been largely lost to us. in this groundbreaking study, michael v. pisani goes in search of these abandoned sounds. mining old manuscripts and newspapers, he finds that starting in the 1790s, theatrical managers in britain and the united states began to rely on music to play an interpretive role in melodramatic productions. during the nineteenth century, instrumental music—in addition to song—was a common feature in the production of stage plays. the music played by instrumental ensembles not only enlivened performances but also served other important functions. many actors and actresses found that accompanimental music helped them sustain the emotional pitch of a monologue or dialogue sequence. music also helped audiences to identify the motivations of characters. playwrights used music to hold together the hybrid elements of melodrama, heighten the build toward sensation, and dignify the tragic pathos of villains and other characters. music also aided manager-directors by providing cues for lighting and other stage effects. moreover, in a century of seismic social and economic changes, music could provide a moral compass in an uncertain moral universe. featuring dozens of musical examples and images of the old theatres, music for the melodramatic theatre charts the progress of the genre from its earliest use in the eighteenth century to the elaborate stage productions of the very early twentieth century.
