Description : Read Now A Companion To Chinese Art by Martin J. Powers and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. a companion to chinese art provides a contemporary survey of one of the world’s greatest and richest artistic traditions. including over two dozen newly-commissioned essays, it examines this region’s art and theory in all of its multifaceted complexity—spanning the theories, genres, and media central to chinese art throughout its history. the volume offers a rich insight into china’s social and political institutions, religious practices, and intellectual traditions alongside chinese art history, theory, and criticism. it brings together an international team of scholars from east and west, whose contributions range from an overview of premodern theory, to those exploring calligraphy, fine painting, sculpture, personal accessories, and more. in addition, the companion reflects on social and cultural issues, such as the challenges of comparative history, the role of the artist in society, the contested role of gender in art production, different theories of nature that have evolved over time, and articulates the direction in which the field of chinese art history is moving. in promoting a comparative understanding of china’s long record of cultural production, this volume provides students and scholars of both asian and non-asian art history with an exceptional guide to the history of art in china, from its earliest incarnations to the present day.

Kuo and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this volume addresses questions of canon, value, historiographical interest, and large-scale historical structures as they apply to chinese art history in the context of post-colonial studies. as the field of chinese art history moves into postcolonial studies, institutional critique, and economic and social contextualization, it is especially important that questions of canon, value, historiographical interest, and large-scale historical structures not be left behind. the aim of this book is to examine critically the historiography of the field of chinese painting, to assess what achievements have been made, and to understand what and how personal backgrounds of scholars and institutional constraints may have affected various practices in the field. "this volume is a comprehensive and critically self-aware introduction to the history of chinese art historiography in america, and includes reflections on more general issues of the encounters between east and west. this is a timely, much-needed book." -olga lomova, director, institute of east asian studies, charles university, prague, and dircetor, chiang ching-kuo foundation international sinological center, prague; editor of recarving the dragon: understanding chinese poetics. Description : Read Now China And Europe by Thomas H. C. Lee and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in both the literal and metaphorical senses, it seemed as if 1970s america was running out of gas. the decade not only witnessed long lines at gas stations but a citizenry that had grown weary and disillusioned. high unemployment, runaway inflation, and the energy crisis, caused in part by u.s. dependence on arab oil, characterized an increasingly bleak economic situation. as edward d. berkowitz demonstrates, the end of the postwar economic boom, watergate, and defeat in vietnam led to an unraveling of the national consensus. during the decade, ideas about the united states, how it should be governed, and how its economy should be managed changed dramatically. berkowitz argues that the postwar faith in sweeping social programs and a global u.s. mission was replaced by a more skeptical attitude about government's ability to positively affect society. from woody allen to watergate, from the decline of the steel industry to the rise of bill gates, and from saturday night fever to the sunday morning fervor of evangelical preachers, berkowitz captures the history, tone, and spirit of the seventies. he explores the decade's major political events and movements, including the rise and fall of détente, congressional reform, changes in healthcare policies, and the hostage crisis in iran. the seventies also gave birth to several social movements and the "rights revolution," in which women, gays and lesbians, and people with disabilities all successfully fought for greater legal and social recognition. at the same time, reaction to these social movements as well as the issue of abortion introduced a new facet into american political life-the rise of powerful, politically conservative religious organizations and activists. berkowitz also considers important shifts in american popular culture, recounting the creative renaissance in american film as well as the birth of the hollywood blockbuster. he discusses how television programs such as all in the family and charlie's angels offered americans both a reflection of and an escape from the problems gripping the country.
