Description : Read Now The Darker Side Of Western Modernity by Walter D. Mignolo and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. during the renaissance and the enlightenment, coloniality emerged as a new structure of power as europeans colonized the americas and built on the ideas of western civilization and modernity as the endpoints of historical time and europe as the center of the world. walter d. mignolo argues that coloniality is the darker side of western modernity, a complex matrix of power that has been created and controlled by western men and institutions from the renaissance, when it was driven by christian theology, through the late twentieth century and the dictates of neoliberalism. this cycle of coloniality is coming to an end. two main forces are challenging western leadership in the early twenty-first century. one of these, “dewesternization,” is an irreversible shift to the east in struggles over knowledge, economics, and politics. the second force is “decoloniality.” mignolo explains that decoloniality requires delinking from the colonial matrix of power underlying western modernity to imagine and build global futures in which human beings and the natural world are no longer exploited in the relentless quest for wealth accumulation.

Description : Read Now Globalization And The Decolonial Option by Walter D. Mignolo and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this is the first book in english profiling the work of a research collective that evolved around the notion of "coloniality", understood as the hidden agenda and the darker side of modernity and whose members are based in south america and the united states. the project called for an understanding of modernity not from modernity itself but from its darker side, coloniality, and proposes the de-colonization of knowledge as an epistemological restitution with political and ethical implications. epistemic decolonization, or de-coloniality, becomes the horizon to imagine and act toward global futures in which the notion of a political enemy is replaced by intercultural communication and towards an-other rationality that puts life first and that places institutions at its service, rather than the other way around. the volume is profoundly inter- and trans-disciplinary, with authors writing from many intellectual, transdisciplinary, and institutional spaces. this book was published as a special issue of cultural studies.

Description : Read Now Against War by Nelson Maldonado-Torres and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. nelson maldonado-torres argues that european modernity has become inextricably linked with the experience of the warrior and conqueror. in against war, he develops a powerful critique of modernity, and he offers a critical response combining ethics, political theory, and ideas rooted in christian and jewish thought. maldonado-torres focuses on the perspectives of those who inhabit the underside of western modernity, particularly jewish, black, and latin american theorists. he analyzes the works of the lithuanian-born french-jewish philosopher and religious thinker emmanuel levinas, the martiniquean psychiatrist and political thinker frantz fanon, and the catholic argentinean-mexican philosopher, historian, and theologian enrique dussel. considering levinas's notion of the self in relation to french liberalism and nazi racial politics, maldonado-torres elaborates a "master morality" of dominion and control at the heart of racial policies, imperial projects, and wars of invasion. he refines the outlines of modernity's war paradigm via fanon's phenomenology of the colonized and racial self. critiquing levinas and fanon, each through the thought of the other, maldonado-torres formulates an ethical conception of subjectivity. he draws on dussel to provide a genealogy of the modern imperial and warring self. maldonado-torres's argument culminates in his theorization of race as the naturalization of war's death ethic. with against war, maldonado-torres advances the de-colonial turn, which posits ethics as the primary antidote to problems with western conceptions of freedom, autonomy, and equality, and insists on the necessity of politics to forge a world where ethical relations become the norm rather than the exception.

Description : Read Now Learning To Unlearn by Madina Vladimirovna Tlostanova and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. learning to unlearn: decolonial reflections from eurasia and the americas is a complex, multisided rethinking of the epistemic matrix of western modernity and coloniality from the position of border epistemology. colonial and imperial differences are the two key concepts to understanding how the logic of coloniality creates ontological and epistemic exteriorities. being at once an enactment of decolonial thinking and an attempt to define its main grounds, mechanisms, and concepts, the book shifts the politics of knowledge from “studying the other” (culture, society, economy, politics) toward “the thinking other” (the authors). addressing areas as diverse as the philosophy of higher education, gender, citizenship, human rights, and indigenous agency, and providing fascinating and little-known examples of decolonial thinking, education, and art, madina v. tlostanova and walter d. mignolo deconstruct the modern architecture of knowledge—its production and distribution as manifested in the corporate university. in addition, the authors dwell on and define the echoing global decolonial sensibilities as expressed in the americas and in peripheral eurasia. the book is an important addition to the emerging transoceanic inquiries that introduce decolonial thought and non-western border epistemologies not only to update or transform disciplines but also to act and think decolonially in the global futures to come.

Description : Read Now Rereading The Black Legend by Margaret R. Greer and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the phrase “the black legend” was coined in 1912 by a spanish journalist in protest of the characterization of spain by other europeans as a backward country defined by ignorance, superstition, and religious fanaticism, whose history could never recover from the black mark of its violent conquest of the americas. challenging this stereotype, rereading the black legend contextualizes spain’s uniquely tarnished reputation by exposing the colonial efforts of other nations whose interests were served by propagating the “black legend.” a distinguished group of contributors here examine early modern imperialisms including the ottomans in eastern europe, the portuguese in east india, and the cases of mughal india and china, to historicize the charge of unique spanish brutality in encounters with indigenous peoples during the age of exploration. the geographic reach and linguistic breadth of this ambitious collection will make it a valuable resource for any discussion of race, national identity, and religious belief in the european renaissance.
