Description : Read Now The Life Of The Mind In Old English Poetry by Antonina Harbus and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. ideas about the human mind are culturally specific and over time vary in form and prominence. the life of the mind in old english poetry presents the first extensive exploration of anglo-saxon beliefs about the mind and how these views informed old english poetry. it identifies in this poetry a particular cultural focus on the mental world and formulates a multivalent model of the mind behind it, as the seat of emotions, the site of temptation, the container of knowledge, and a heroic weapon. the life of the mind in old english poetry treats a wide range of old english literary genres (in the context of their latin sources and analogues where applicable) in order to discover how ideas about the mind shape the narrative, didactic, and linguistic design of poetic discourse. particular attention is paid to the rich and slippery vernacular vocabulary for the mind which suggests a special interest in the subject in old english poetry. the book argues that anglo-saxon poets were acutely conscious of mental functions and perceived the psychological basis not only of the cognitive world, but also of the emotions and of the spiritual life.

Description : Read Now Reading The Runes In Old English And Old Norse Poetry by Thomas Birkett and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. reading the runes in old english and old norse poetry is the first book-length study to compare responses to runic heritage in the literature of anglo-saxon england and medieval iceland. the anglo-saxon runic script had already become the preserve of antiquarians at the time the majority of old english poetry was written down, and the icelanders recording the mythology associated with the script were at some remove from the centres of runic practice in medieval scandinavia. both literary cultures thus inherited knowledge of the runic system and the traditions associated with it, but viewed this literate past from the vantage point of a developed manuscript culture. there has, as yet, been no comprehensive study of poetic responses to this scriptural heritage, which include episodes in such canonical texts as beowulf, the old english riddles and the poems of the poetic edda. by analysing the inflection of the script through shared literary traditions, this study enhances our understanding of the burgeoning of literary self-awareness in early medieval vernacular poetry and the construction of cultural memory, and furthers our understanding of the relationship between anglo-saxon and norse textual cultures. the introduction sets out in detail the rationale for examining runes in poetry as a literary motif and surveys the relevant critical debates. the body of the volume is comprised of five linked case studies of runes in poetry, viewing these representations through the paradigm of scriptural reconstruction and the validation of contemporary literary, historical and religious sensibilities.

Description : Read Now Pagan Words And Christian Meanings by Richard North and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. an evolution of attitudes towards pre-christian custom in , north-west europe, as shown in early .medieval word-fields and texts in old english and old icelandic literature, is represented in six variously focussed studies. the first three chapters, pagan words, form a network of research on pre-christian concepts of mind and soul as they survived, still active, in christianized heroic poetry. this was part of. the heathen matrix through which the first expressions of christianity in old english and icelandic literature were possible. the second half of this book, christian meanings, shows .how the same christian literature produced reinterpretations of paganism. the literary range stretches from the earliest epic formulae to the polished genealogical novels of thirteenth-century iceland- an ancient tradition of augury is invoked by the poet of the seafarerto illustrate a believer's passage to heaven. in havamal, an artificially pagan creed of ritual teaching and responses is compiled in iceland as an antiquarian entertainment, perhaps on a christian model. the last chapter shows a variety of christian interpretations of, paganism in four sagas of icelanders from the early to late thirteenth century. overall where paganism was concerned, the tendency was first to cast off a way of life, then later, when that life was lost forever, to reinvent it for the imagination.

LaPadula and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the concept of the individual or the self, central in so many modern-day contexts, has not been investigated in depth in the anglo-saxon period. focusing on old english poetry, the author argues that a singular, anglo-saxon sense of self may be found by analyzing their surviving verse. the concept of the individual, with an identity outside of her community, is clearly evident during this period, and the widely accepted view that the individual as we understand it did not really exist until the renaissance does not stand up to scrutiny.

Description : Read Now Darkness Depression And Descent In Anglo Saxon England by Ruth Wehlau and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this collection of essays examines the motifs of darkness, depression, and descent in both literal and figurative manifestations within a variety of anglo-saxon texts, including the old english consolation of philosophy, beowulf, guthlac, the junius manuscript, the wonders of the east, and the battle of maldon. essays deal with such topics as cosmic emptiness, descent into the grave, and recurrent grief. in their analyses, the essays reveal the breadth of this imagery in anglo-saxon literature as it is used to describe thought and emotion, as well as the limits to knowledge and perception. the volume investigates the intersection between the burgeoning interest in trauma studies and darkness and the representation of the mind or of emotional experience within anglo-saxon literature.
