Walton, Brent Sandy and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. 2014 readers' choice awards honorable mention preaching's preacher's guide to the best bible reference for 2014 (scripture/hermeneutics) from john h. walton, author of the bestselling lost world of genesis one, and d. brent sandy, author of plowshares and pruning hooks, comes a detailed look at the origins of scriptural authority in ancient oral cultures and how they inform our understanding of the old and new testaments today. stemming from questions about scriptural inerrancy, inspiration and oral transmission of ideas, the lost world of scripture examines the process by which the bible has come to be what it is today. from the reasons why specific words were used to convey certain ideas to how oral tradition impacted the transmission of biblical texts, the authors seek to uncover how these issues might affect our current doctrine on the authority of scripture. "in this book we are exploring ways god chose to reveal his word in light of discoveries about ancient literary culture," write walton and sandy. "our specific objective is to understand better how both the old and new testaments were spoken, written and passed on, especially with an eye to possible implications for the bible s inspiration and authority."

Description : Read Now The Lost World Of The Israelite Conquest by John H. Walton and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. holy warfare is the festering wound on the conscience of bible-believing christians. of all the problems the old testament poses for our modern age, this is the one we want to avoid in mixed company. but do the so-called holy war texts of the old testament portray a divinely inspired genocide? did israel slaughter canaanites at god's command? were they enforcing divine retribution on an unholy people? these texts shock. and we turn the page. but have we rightly understood them?in the lost world of the israelite conquest, john walton and j. harvey walton take us on an archeological dig, excavating the layers of translation and interpretation that over time have encrusted these texts and our perceptions. what happens when we take new approaches, frame new questions? when we weigh again their language and rhetoric? were the canaanites punished for sinning against the covenanting god? does the hebrew word herem mean "devote to destruction"? how are the canaanites portrayed and why? and what happens when we backlight these texts with their ancient context? the lost world of the israelite conquest keenly recalibrates our perception and reframes our questions. while not attempting to provide all the answers, it offers surprising new insights and clears the ground for further understanding.

Description : Read Now Genesis 1 As Ancient Cosmology by John H. Walton and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the ancient near eastern mode of thought is not at all intuitive to us moderns, but our understanding of ancient perspectives can only approach accuracy when we begin to penetrate ancient texts on their own terms rather than imposing our own world view. in this task, we are aided by the ever-growing corpus of literature that is being recovered and analyzed. after an introduction that presents some of the history of comparative studies and how it has been applied to the study of ancient texts in general and cosmology in particular, walton focuses in the first half of this book on the ancient near eastern texts that inform our understanding about ancient ways of thinking about cosmology. of primary interest are the texts that can help us discern the parameters of ancient perspectives on cosmic ontology--that is, how the writers perceived origins. texts from across the ancient near east are presented, including primarily egyptian, sumerian, and akkadian texts, but occasionally also ugaritic and hittite, as appropriate. walton's intention, first of all, is to understand the texts but also to demonstrate that a functional ontology pervaded the cognitive environment of the ancient near east. this functional ontology involves more than just the idea that ordering the cosmos was the focus of the cosmological texts. he posits that, in the ancient world, bringing about order and functionality was the very essence of creative activity. he also pays close attention to the ancient ideology of temples to show the close connection between temples and the functioning cosmos. the second half of the book is devoted to a fresh analysis of genesis 1:1-2:4. walton offers studies of significant hebrew terms and seeks to show that the israelite texts evidence a functional ontology and a cosmology that is constructed with temple ideology in mind, as in the rest of the ancient near east. he contends that genesis 1 never was an account of material origins but that, as in the rest of the ancient world, the focus of "creation texts" was to order the cosmos by initiating functions for the components of the cosmos. he further contends that the cosmology of genesis 1 is founded on the premise that the cosmos should be understood in temple terms. all of this is intended to demonstrate that, when we read genesis 1 as the ancient document it is, rather than trying to read it in light of our own world view, the text comes to life in ways that help recover the energy it had in its original context. at the same time, it provides a new perspective on genesis 1 in relation to what have long been controversial issues. far from being a borrowed text, genesis 1 offers a unique theology, even while it speaks from the platform of its contemporaneous cognitive environment.

Description : Read Now Covenant by John H. Walton and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. as one of the most prominent themes in scripture, the covenant is crucial to all christian theological systems, from dispensationalism to covenant theology to theonomy to liberation theology. one would think that by now all controversies have been exhausted, but an issue of this magnitude can never finally be laid to rest. because disagreements persist, there is room for yet another attempt to study the covenant and improve our understanding of it. this book proposes that the path toward an evangelical consensus is not to be found in building another modified systematic theology, but in a biblical theology approach. grounded in this approach, john walton's perspective is that while the covenant is characteristically redemptive, formulated along the lines of ancient treaties, and ultimately soteric, it is essentially revelatory. this view in turn has implications regarding the continuity or discontinuity of the covenant phases, the conditionality of the covenant, and our understanding of the people of god. and this ultimately affects the way the old testament is preached and taught. walton's thesis is an important contribution to the discussion of the covenant and the attempts to find common ground among evangelicals of diverse theological traditions.

Description : Read Now The Only True God by James F. McGrath and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. monotheism, the idea that there is only one true god, is a powerful religious concept that was shaped by competing ideas and the problems they raised. surveying new testament writings and jewish sources from before and after the rise of christianity, james f. mcgrath argues that even the most developed christologies in the new testament fit within the context of first century jewish "monotheism." in doing so, he pinpoints more precisely when the parting of ways took place over the issue of god's oneness, and he explores philosophical ideas such as "creation out of nothing," which caused jews and christians to develop differing concepts and definitions about god.

Description : Read Now Genesis 1 And The Creationism Debate by Steven DiMattei and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. modern readers often assume that genesis 1 depicts the creation of the earth and sky as we know it. yet in an appeal for textual honesty, steven dimattei shows that such beliefs are more representative of modern views about this ancient text than the actual claims and beliefs of its author. through a culturally contextualized and objective reading of the texts of genesis 1 and 2, this study not only introduces readers to the textual data that convincingly demonstrate that genesis' two creation accounts were penned by different authors who held contradictory views and beliefs about the origin of the world and of man and woman, but also establishes on textual grounds that what the author of genesis 1 portrayed god creating was the world as its author and culture perceived and experienced it--not the objective world, but a subjective world, subject to the culturally conditioned views and beliefs of its author. in the end, this book clearly illustrates that the bible's ancient texts do in fact represent the beliefs and worldviews of ancient peoples and cultures--not those of god, not those of later readers, and especially not those of modern-day creationists.

Description : Read Now Evolutionary Creation by Denis O. Lamoureux and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in this provocative book, evolutionist and evangelical christian denis o. lamoureux proposes an approach to origins that moves beyond the 'evolution-versus-creation' debate. arguing for an intimate relationship between the "book of god's words" and the "book of god's works", he presents evolutionary creation - a position that asserts that the father, son and holy spirit created the universe and life through an ordained and sustained evolutionary process. this view of origins affirms intelligent design and the belief that beauty, complexity and functionality in nature reflect the mind of god. lamoureux also challenges the popular christian assumption that the holy spirit revealed scientific and historical facts in the opening chapters of the bible. he contends that 'scripture features an ancient understanding of origins that functions as vessel to deliver inerrant and infallible messages of faith'. lamoureux shares his personal story and his struggle in coming to terms with evolution and christianity. like many, he lost his boyhood faith at university in classes on evolutionary biology. after graduation, he experienced a born-again conversion and then embraced belief in a literal six-day creation. graduate school training at the doctoral level in both theology and biology led him to the conclusion that god created the world through evolution. lamoureux closes with the two most important issues in the origins controversy - the pastoral and pedagogical implications. how should churches approach this volatile topic? and what should christians teach their children about origins?
