Description : Read Now The Moral Theology Of Roger Williams by James Calvin Davis and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. roger williams, new england troublemaker and founder of rhode island, is seldom included among the great figures in american reformed theology. yet williams's arguments for religious liberty were deeply rooted in puritan calvinism. this book explores the "moral theology" that informed williams's spirited defense of toleration, demonstrating how reformed theology in williams's hands allowed him to defend the integrity of religious convictions while also making the case for conversation and cooperation with moral citizens outside his circle of faith. the columbia series in reformed theology represents a joint commitment by columbia theological seminary and westminster john knox press to provide theological resources from the reformed tradition for the church today. this series examines theological and ethical issues that confront church and society in our own particular time and place.

Description : Read Now A History Of Catholic Moral Theology In The Twentieth Century by James F. Keenan and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this is an historical survey of 20th century roman catholic theological ethics (also known as moral theology). the thesis is that only through historical investigation can we really understand how the most conservative and negative field in catholic theology at the beginning of the 20th could become by the end of the 20th century the most innovative one. the 20th century begins with moral manuals being translated into the vernacular. after examining the manuals of thomas slater and henry davis, keenan then turns to three works and a crowning synthesis of innovation all developed before, during and soon after the second world war. the first by odon lottin asks whether moral theology is adequately historical; fritz tillmann asks whether it's adequately biblical; and gerard gilleman, whether it's adequately spiritual. bernard haering integrates these contributions into his law of christ. of course, people like gerald kelly and john ford in the us are like a few moralists elsewhere, classical gate keepers, censoring innovation. but with humanae vitae, and successive encyclicals, bishops and popes reject the direction of moral theologians. at the same time, moral theologians, like josef fuchs, ask whether the locus of moral truth is in continuous, universal teachings of the magisterium or in the moral judgment of the informed conscience. in their move toward a deeper appreciation of their field as forming consciences, they turn more deeply to local experience where they continue their work of innovation. each continent subsequently gives rise to their own respondents: in europe they speak of autonomy and personalism; in latin america, liberation theology; in north america, feminism and black catholic theology; and, in asia and africa a deep post-colonial interculturatism. at the end i assert that in its nature, theological ethics is historical and innovative, seeking moral truth for the conscience by looking to speak crossculturally.

Description : Read Now Ethics Of Everyday Life by Michael Banner and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the moments in christ's human life noted in the creeds (his conception, birth, suffering, death, and burial) are events which would likely appear in a syllabus for a course in social anthropology, for they are of special interest and concern in human life, and also sites of contention and controversy, where what it is to be human is discovered, constructed, and contested. in other words, these are the occasions for profound and continuing questioning regarding the meaning of human life, as controversies to do with ivf, abortion, euthanasia, and the use of bodies or body parts post mortem plainly indicate. thus the following questions arise, how do the instances in christ's life represent human life, and how do these representations relate to present day cultural norms, expectations, and newly emerging modes of relationship, themselves shaping and framing human life? how does the christian imagination of human life, which dwells on and draws from the life of christ, not only articulate its own, but also come into conversation with and engage other moral imaginaries of the human? michael banner argues that consideration of these questions requires study of moral theology, therefore, he reconceives its nature and tasks, and in particular, its engagement with social anthropology. drawing from social anthropology and christian thought and practice from many periods, and influenced especially by his engagement in public policy matters including as a member of the uk's human tissue authority, banner aims to develop the outlines of an everyday ethics, stretching from before the cradle to after the grave.

Description : Read Now Reframing Catholic Theological Ethics by Joseph A. Selling and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the second vatican council (1962-65) called for a fundamental renewal of catholic theological ethics. that project, however, has not been realized primarily because of the strong defence of a normative, act-centred understanding of morality defended by pope paul vi and his successor, pope john paul ii. reframing theological ethics aims to overcome that impasse by arguing for a change in the method of ethical reasoning, emphasizing the replacement of thenorm of natural law with that of the human person, integrally and adequately considered, and elaborating an innovative theory of virtue. the paradigm of complementary virtues presented in this book is developedfor the first time and allows the ethicist to flesh out the meaning and contours of the ends or goals of ethical living and decision-making. the study concludes with suggestions about how this approach may converge with the insights of normative ethics and achieve the renewal called for fifty years ago.
