Description : Read Now The Politics Of Furniture by Fredie Floré and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in many different parts of the world modern furniture elements have served as material expressions of power in the post-war era. they were often meant to express an international and in some respects apolitical modern language, but when placed in a sensitive setting or a meaningful architectural context, they were highly capable of negotiating or manipulating ideological messages. the agency of modern furniture was often less overt than that of political slogans or statements, but as the chapters in this book reveal, it had the potential of becoming a persuasive and malleable ally in very diverse politically charged arenas, including embassies, governmental ministries, showrooms, exhibitions, design schools, libraries, museums and even prisons. this collection of chapters examines the consolidating as well as the disrupting force of modern furniture in the global context between 1945 and the mid-1970s. the volume shows that key to understanding this phenomenon is the study of the national as well as transnational systems through which it was launched, promoted and received. while some chapters squarely focus on individual furniture elements as vehicles communicating political and social meaning, others consider the role of furniture within potent sites that demand careful negotiation, whether between governments, cultures, or buyer and seller. in doing so, the book explicitly engages different scholarly fields: design history, history of interior architecture, architectural history, cultural history, diplomatic and political history, postcolonial studies, tourism studies, material culture studies, furniture history, and heritage and preservation studies. taken together, the narratives and case studies compiled in this volume offer a better understanding of the political agency of post-war modern furniture in its original historical context. at the same time, they will enrich current debates on reuse, relocation or reproduction of some of these elements.

Description : Read Now The Housing Project by Gaia Caramellino and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. throughout the twentieth century housing displays have proven to be a singular genre of architectural and design exhibitions. by crossing geographies and adopting multiple scales of observation – from domestic space to urban visions – this volume investigates a set of unexplored events devoted to housing and dwelling, organised by technical, professional, cultural or governmental institutions from the interwar years to the cold war. the book offers a first critical assessment of twentieth-century housing exhibits and explores the role of exhibitions in the codification of notions of domesticity, social models, policies, and architectural and urban discourse. at the intersection of housing studies and the history of exhibitions, the housing project not only offers a novel angle on architectural history but also enriches scholarly perspectives in urban studies, cultural and media history, design, and consumption studies. this publication is gprc-labeled (guaranteed peer-reviewed content). contributors: tamara bjažić klarin, gaia caramellino, john crosse, stéphanie dadour, rika devos, fredie floré, johanna hartmann, erin mckellar, laetitia overney, josé parra-martínez, mathilde simonsen dahl, eva storgaard, ludovica vacirca

Description : Read Now Charm Offensive by Joshua Kurlantzick and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. at the beginning of the twenty-first century, china is poised to become a major global power. and though much has been written of china's rise, a crucial aspect of this transformation has gone largely unnoticed: the way that china is using soft power to appeal to its neighbours and to distant countries alike. this original book is the first to examine the significance of china's recent focus on soft power, that is, diplomacy, trade incentives, cultural and educational exchange opportunities, and other techniques, to project a benign national image, pose as a model of social and economic success, and develop stronger international alliances. drawing on years of experience tracking china's policies in southeast asia, latin america, and africa, joshua kurlantzick reveals how china has wooed the world with a charm offensive that has largely escaped the attention of american policymakers. beijing's new diplomacy has altered the political landscape in southeast asia and far beyond, changing the dynamics of china's relationships with other countries. china also has worked to take advantage of american policy mistakes, the author contends. in a provocative conclusion, he considers a future in which china may be the first nation since the soviet union to rival the u.s. in international influence.

Description : Read Now Cascades Of Violence by John Braithwaite and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. as in the cascading of water, violence and nonviolence can cascade down from commanding heights of power (as in waterfalls), up from powerless peripheries, and can undulate to spread horizontally (flowing from one space to another). as with containing water, conflict cannot be contained without asking crucial questions about which variables might cause it to cascade from the top-down, bottom up and from the middle-out. the book shows how violence cascades from state to state. empirical research has shown that nations with a neighbor at war are more likely to have a civil war themselves (sambanis 2001). more importantly in the analysis of this book, war cascades from hot spot to hot spot within and between states (autesserre 2010, 2014). the key to understanding cascades of hot spots is in the interaction between local and macro cleavages and alliances (kalyvas 2006). the analysis exposes the folly of asking single-level policy questions like do the benefits and costs of a regime change in iraq justify an invasion? we must also ask what other violence might cascade from an invasion of iraq? the cascades concept is widespread in the physical and biological sciences with cascades in geology, particle physics and the globalization of contagion. the past two decades has seen prominent and powerful applications of the cascades idea to the social sciences (sunstein 1997; gladwell 2000; sikkink 2011). in his discussion of ethnic violence, james rosenau (1990) stressed that the image of turbulence developed by mathematicians and physicists could provide an important basis for understanding the idea of bifurcation and related ideas of complexity, chaos, and turbulence in complex systems. he classified the bifurcated systems in contemporary world politics as the multicentric system and the statecentric system. each of these affects the others in multiple ways, at multiple levels, and in ways that make events enormously hard to predict (rosenau 1990, 2006). he replaced the idea of events with cascades to describe the event structures that 'gather momentum, stall, reverse course, and resume anew as their repercussions spread among whole systems and subsystems' (1990: 299). through a detailed analysis of case studies in south asia, that built on john braithwaite's twenty-five year project peacebuilding compared, and coding of conflicts in different parts of the globe, we expand rosenau's concept of global turbulence and images of cascades. in the cascades of violence in south asia, we demonstrate how micro-events such as localized riots, land-grabbing, pervasive militarization and attempts to assassinate political leaders are linked to large scale macro-events of global politics. we argue in order to prevent future conflicts there is a need to understand the relationships between history, structures and agency; interest, values and politics; global and local factors and alliances.

Description : Read Now Shaping The American Interior by Paula Lupkin and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. bringing together 12 original essays, shaping the american interior maps out, for the first time, the development and definition of the field of interiors in the united states in the period from 1870 until 1960. its interdisciplinary approach encompasses a broad range of people, contexts, and practices, revealing the design of the interior as a collaborative modern enterprise comprising art, design, manufacture, commerce, and identity construction. rooted in the expansion of mass production and consumption in the last years of the nineteenth century, new and diverse structures came to define the field and provide formal and informal contexts for design work. intertwined with, but distinct from, architecture and merchandising, interiors encompassed a diffuse range of individuals, institutions, and organizations engaged in the definition of identity, the development of expertise, and the promotion of consumption. this volume investigates the fluid pre-history of the american profession of interior design, charting attempts to commoditize taste, shape modern conceptions of gender and professionalism, define expertise and authority through principles and standards, marry art with industry and commerce, and shape mass culture in the united states.
