Description : Read Now Trade Unions In Western Europe Since 1945 by Bernhard Ebbinghaus and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the societies of europe is an 8-title series of historical data handbooks and accompanying cd-rom sets, on the development of europe from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. the series is a product of the mannheim centre for social research, a body dedicated to comparative research on europe and one of the leading social research institutes in the world. it is a collection of datasets giving a clear and systematic study of long term developments in european society. the data is presented statistically and is clearly comparative. the societies of europe is the most comprehensive data series available on western european social issues. each book is accompanied by a cd-rom containing data sets not included in the text enabling users to manipulate the data as wanted. information is available in different programmes (excel, spss and sas) and in data structures for analysis, viewing and building time series. this comparative data handbook offers an empirical base to a long-term and comparative understanding of changes and variations in european union movements. it provides information on the context and history of union development, the changes in the structure of post-war unionism until today, the long-term trends in union membership and union density, and the shifts in the cross-sectional composition of union membership. this book and cd-rom are the result of many years of research by the authors in collaboration with an international research team, and provides an original source for comparative and national studies or individual enquiries. the country and comparative tables offer cross-checked and often newly-calculated statistics on national union organizations and their membership series. the cd-rom includes selected tables from the handbook and provides additional databases with organizational data and membership series of major national and european union organizations.

Description : Read Now Industrialisation And Trade Union Organization In South Africa 1924 1955 by Jon Lewis and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. this major study of south african trade unionism traces the history of the south african trades and labour council (tlc) from its origins in the 1920s to its demise in the early 1950s. the book focuses on south africa's secondary industrialisation and subsequent changes in work organisation. by analysing trade union structures and strategies in the context of these changes, dr lewis shows how divisions within the labour movement were bound up with the development of production processes and the division of labour, rather than being the inevitable outcome of racial antagonisms. the early chapters analyse the emergence of different trade union strategies: racially exclusive unionism, radical non-racial industrial unionism and at the centre of the stage the old craft unions. craft militancy rather than any strategy of racial exclusion made possible an alliance between these craft unions and the radical industrial unions which was to maintain the unity of the tlc for twenty years. this era came to an end with the rapid industrialisation of the 1940s. as work processes were transformed, the traditional craftsmen lost their technical indispensability at the point- of production and increasingly performed supervisory functions. faced with dilution and undercutting, and increasingly hostile to the majority of black production workers, the craft unions responded by redefining membership on the basis of race rather than skill.

Description : Read Now Red Scotland The Rise And Fall Of The Radical Left C 1872 To 1932 by William Kenefick and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. an excellent resource for teaching and learning, this book explores the rise and decline of left radicalism in scotland c.1872 to 1932. a journey through these turbulent times observes the response of scottish artisans to legal restrictions on trade-union activities in the 1870s, trade union formation among the unskilled from the late 1880s, and the origins and impact of the scottish socialist movement. the labour movement in scotland was to face many new challenges by the twentieth century. during the era of 'red scotland', 1910 to 1922, we see scottish workers fully engaged in the labour and social unrest in the years before the great war; monitor the incubation of workers' grievances during the war; see the growth of the anti-war movement and the influence of revolutionary politics from 1918; and witness scottish labour on the threshold of an extraordinary political breakthrough by 1922. the 1920s saw the rapid rise of labour, but growing unemployment and a massive emigration of scottish workers helped to fragment the left and set in motion the decline of left radicalism in scotland. this book represents a major and up to date survey of the most dramatic years in the history of scottish labour.

Description : Read Now The Rise Of The United Association National Unionism In The Pipe Trades 1884 1924 by Martin Segal and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the rise of the united association is a study of the national union of plumbers, steam fitters, sprinkler fitters, and other pipe trades--the organization known today as the united association of journeymen and apprentices of the plumbing and pipe fitting industry of the united states and canada. the study covers 40 crucial years in the history of national unionism of the pipe trades. in the beginning of the period (in the early 1880's) local unions of plumbers, gas fitters, and steam fitters were making first attempts to form a national organization of their crafts; forty years later, the united association (ua) was unchallenged in its position as the national union of the pipe trades, and constituted one of the strongest organizations in contemporary building trades and in the afl. the rise of the united association concerns itself primarily with the description and analysis of the development and policies of the national union rather than with the history of local organizations of plumbers and steam fitters. in particular, the study deals with the factors that led to the rise of the first national organization of the pipe trades and then to the founding of the ua; with the complex process of internal reform that transformed the ua - originally a loose federation of locals - into a modern national union; and with the policies and tactics that eventually brought within the fold of the national organization all the pipe trades employed in building and other industries-- plumbers, steam fitters, gas fitters, sprinkler fitters, and others. during the course of the forty years of unionism described in this volume the leaders and members of the national organizations of the pipe trades were confronted with many crucial and difficult issues - the relation of their organization to the knights of labor, the development of a viable system of union government and finances, the regulation of apprenticeship in plumbing and steam fitting, the problem of establishing jurisdictional lines among the members of a multi-craft union. the description and analysis of union policies toward these and other issues provide major insights into the process of growth of an important labor organization and, indeed, into the development of national unionism in america.
