Description : Read Now Toxin by Alistair J. Lax and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. what do the following have in common: the promise of botox as the key to everlasting youthful looks; e. coli o157 hamburger disease; a mysterious illness which killed 35 heroin users in 2000; and the assassination by poisoned umbrella-tip of a bulgarian dissident in the 1970s? the answer is that all of these are caused by toxins, the powerful biological poisons released by bacteria and some plants. in toxin, alistair lax reveals the panoply of ways in which bacterial toxins overcome the defences of our cells. he explains how they work, how they are so successful in causing major diseases, the terrible human impact they have had, and how apparently 'new' diseases arise from them. he also discusses how we can combat toxins, and how we can harness their actions for beneficial purposes. enlivened by the very human story of the persistence, rivalries, and insights from which modern microbiology grew, toxin is the first widely accessible account of this exciting and important topic.

Description : Read Now Advances In Microbial Toxin Research And Its Biotechnological Exploitation by Rajeev K. Upadhyay and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. microbial toxins are secondary metabolites that accumulate in the organism and, to a large extent, are metabolically inactive towards the organism that produces them. the discovery of penicillin, a secondary metabolite of penicillium notatum west (= p. chrysogenum thom), in 1929 marked a milestone in the development of antibiotics (microbial toxins). in the intensive studies that followed this discovery, scientists chemically characterized several new molecules (toxins) from secondary metabolites of microbes, some having a definite function in causing pathogenesis in plants. toxins are also known to playa significant role in inciting animal (human) and insect diseases and as plant growth regulators. many common toxins have also been isolated from different microbes exhibiting a wide spectrum of biological activity. toxins are broadly divisible into several characteristic groupings - polyketides, oxygen heterocyclic compounds, pyrons, terpenoids, amino acids - diketopiperazines, polypeptides etc. recent research has indicated that these toxins play an important role in plant pathogenesis, disease epidemics, plant breeding, biological control of plant pathogens and insect pests, induced resistance, plant-pathogen interactions etc. toxins produced by weed pathogens are exploited as lead molecules in developing environmentally friendly herbicides.

Description : Read Now Botulinum Toxin In Painful Diseases by Wolfgang H. Jost and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. the exceptionally successful history of botulinum toxin and its likely future has hardly an equivalent. initially, it was used in strabismus, blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm, later also in focal dystonia and spasticity and it has been shown to effectively treat wrinkles, hyperhidrosis and a great number of ensuing indications. by treating symptoms or disorders associated with pain, its analgesic effect was first noticed. the efficacy and reasons for this side effect have since been investigated and a number of models explaining the mode of action have been presented. however, even if we know that botulinum toxin undoubtedly helps in certain pain syndromes, there is still much work to do to identify the major ones, define the optimum dose and the preferred site of injection. indicating current positions and kindling the growing interest in this extraordinary therapeutic agent this book presents a timely overview on pain management with botulinum toxin. thus, it will be of great interest especially for anesthesiologists and neurologists in their clinical work and medical research.
